LET’S TALK THE BIG ONE

Whether you’re a swine veterinarian, a pig producer, or just some guy who found this magazine in a dentist’s waiting room, I have four words I’d like you to remember. Are you ready? The four words are: DON’T. FORGET. THE. GUT.

Now, if you’re the guy in the dentist’s waiting room, you can move on. The rest of you? Stick around because I’m going to introduce you to some pig gut essentials. That’s right, we’re talking pig guts. Because whether you realize it or not, your swine’s digestive health may be the foundation of a successful operation.

There’s a whole batch of diseases that can harm your herd’s gut health, but let’s start with a big one: Ileitis, the constant threat lurking outside — and inside — the swine barn. It’s transmitted through fecal matter and infects virtually every herd. The impact ranges from weight loss to fatality, but I don’t have to tell you how frustrating the variation in market weights, and death, can be. Fortunately, that one’s easy to knock out through oral vaccination. (Ileitis — not death. That one’s coming for us all.)

I’m going to let you digest that one for a bit, but stay tuned for more good gut stuff.
