Spring planting has kicked off in southern states and is just a few months away for much of the Midwest. What will farmers plant this spring?

According to a recent Farm Journal Pulse, a text message survey, most farmers will plant half of their acres or less to corn. More than 1,300 respondents answered the question: What percent of your acres will be planted to corn?

Here are the full results:

  • 1-25% of acres: 15%
  • 26-45% of acres: 20%
  • 46-55% of acres: 30%
  • 56-75% of acres: 19%
  • 76-99% of acres: 4%
  • 100% of acres: 4%
  • None: 9%

More Soybeans in 2014

USDA is expecting a surge in soybean acres this year and a decrease in corn acres, compared to last year. During its annual Agricultural Outlook Forum, USDA pegged this year’s acreage mix to be:

  • U.S. corn plantings of 92 million acres, compared with 95.4 million acres in 2013
  • 2014 U.S. soybean plantings of 79.5 million acres, compared with 76.5 million in 2013
  • 2014 U.S. wheat sowings of 55.5 million acres, compared with 56.2 million in 2013
  • 2014 U.S. plantings for all cotton of 11.5 million acres, compared with 10.4 million in 2013

Farmers are expected to shift a significant numbers out of corn and toward soybeans this year, according to one market analyst. However, the annual acreage battle is always a wild card as you never know what Mother Nature will do.
