13 Overtopped Levees

June 25, 2008 07:00 PM
As of 10:30 a.m., June 26, 13 levees have been overtopped in the Rock Island District's area of operation. The Rock Island District includes large portions of Iowa and Illinois and smaller portions of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Missouri
All levees that overtopped will have to be evaluated after the water recedes to determine whether they also breached. (A levee breach is when part of the levee actually breaks away, leaving a large opening for water to flood the land protected by the levee.)

The overtopped levees are:
  • Indian Grave Lower, overtopped 6/18
  • Hunt Lima, overtopped 6/18
  • Henderson #2, overtopped 6/17
  • Henderson #1, overtopped 6/17
  • Gregory levee, overtopped, then breached 6/16
  • Union Township, overtopped, then breached 6/16
  • John Reiff, overtopped 6/16
  • Mississippi Fox 1, overtopped, then breached  6/15
  • Mississippi Fox 2, overtopped, then breached 6/15
  • Mississippi Fox 3, overtopped, then breached 6/15
  • Henderson #3, overtopped 6/14
  • Two Rivers Upper, overtopped 6/14
  • Keithsburg, breached 6/14
