Thousands of hogs drowned in the aftermath of historic rainfall that drenched the Midwest earlier this week.

According to a report by Reuters, recent storms dropped more than a foot of rain in portions of Missouri and Illinois.

In Illinois, an estimated 2,500 hogs drowned after a nearby creek overflowed its banks. Jennifer Tirey, executive director of the Illinois Pork Producers Association, told reporters there was no chance to rescue the animals.

"There was no electricity and roads were impassable. It was just impossible to get to those pigs," she said.
