The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has received more than 15,000 letters regarding a Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) waiver request by Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R).

Current law requires the use of 9 billion gallons of ethanol in 2009 but allows the EPA to waive the mandate if it harms the economy. Perry wants the agency to cut it in half.

The EPA has until late July to rule on the request.

Other changes Perry supports. Perry said Tuesday that he would support eliminating the blender tax credit for ethanol and lifting the high import tariffs on ethanol.

More information: The docket number for Perry's ethanol waiver request is EPA-HQ-OAR-2008-0380. To read comments on Perry's request: http://www.regulations.gov.
