HEADLINES
NAFTA DISCUSSIONS HEAT UP IN THE NORTHERN  HEMISPHERE. PLUS, COVERAGE FROM THE CATTLE INDUSTRY CONVENTION IN  NASHVILLE. IN THE PROFARMER PROFIT BRIEFING...DIGGING INTO CATTLE MARKETS. FARM JOURNAL COLLEGE TV TALKS PLANTER PARTS FOR WHEAT GROWERS. AND  A DRONE THAT LOOKS MORE LIKE A BAT THAN AN AIRPLANE. AGDAY-BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE DEPENDABLE, LONG LASTING CHEVY  SILVERADO.

NAFTA RENEGOTIATION
GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. CALLING IT A "CATASTROPHE FOR OUR  COUNTRY', PRESIDENT TRUMP SAYS HE WANTS TO SPEED-UP NEGOTIATIONS ON  THE NORTH AMERICAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT. THE PRESIDENT MET WITH A GROUP OF SENATORS AND HIS NEW COMMERCE  SECRETARY, WILBUR ROSS. TRUMP SAYS HE HAS NOT DECIDED IF NAFTA NEEDS MODIFICATIONS OR A WHOLE NEW TRADE DEAL TO BE NEGOTIATED. BUT HE DID TELL THE GROUP THAT TRADE NEEDS TO BE FAIR TO THE U-S...AND  FREE."I WANT TO CHANGE IT. MAYBE WE DO IT, AND WE DO A NEW NAFTA, AND WE PUT AN EXTRA "F" IN  THE TERM NAFTA. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE "F" IS FOR? RIGHT? FREE AND FAIR TRADE, NOT JUST FREE, BUT FREE AND FAIR TRADE BECAUSE IT'S VERY UNFAIR. SO, ALL OF THESE STATUTORY GUIDELINES WE'RE  ADHERING TO I WOULD LIKE TO SPEED IT UP IF POSSIBLE."THE PRESIDENT'S COMMENTS COME A DAY AFTER MEXICO KICKED OFF THE  COUNTDOWN ON TRADE NEGOTIATIONS. PRESIDENT ENRIQUE PEÑA NIETO ANNOUNCED WEDNESDAY HE WOULD START TRADE NEGOTIATIONS TO REFORM  NAFTA IN MAY, AFTER A 90-DAY CONSULTATION PERIOD WITH MEXICAN  BUSINESSES. MEANWHILE - CANADA'S TRADE MINISTER SAYS THE COUNTRY IS WILLING TO  RENEGOTIATE NAFTA.  ACCORDING TO PRESS ACCOUNTS IN CANADA, THE  COUNTRY IS WORRIED ABOUT JEOPARDIZING ITS TRADE RELATIONS WITH THE U- S, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME DEVELOPING BETTER RELATIONS WITH MEXICO.

MCOOL BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT
THE ISSUE OF COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABELING MAY BE BACK UNDER  CONSIDERATION BY THE NEW ADIMINISTRATION. PASSED BY CONGRESS-- COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABELING REQUIRED LABLES SHOWING WHERE BEEF WAS BORN, RAISED AND SLAUGHTERED.  OUR TRADING PARTNERS IN CANADA AND MEXICO OBJECTED TO THE  LEGISLATION AND APPEALED TO THE WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION. THE U.S. LOST THE ARGUMENT AND FACED BILLIONS IN RETALIATION UNLESS IT  REPEALED THE MANDATORY LABELING LAW. NOW RUMBLINGS THE CONCEPT MAY BE RESURRECTED. "SOME OF THE TRUMP AG PEOPLE HAVE MENTIONED A MANDATORY COOL,  MCOOL, NOW IF TRUMP AND HIS TOP PEOPLE WOULD GO ALONG WITH THAT, CANADA AND MEXICO AS A RESULT OF THE LITIGATED WTO CASE, IF THEY DIDN'T  LIKE ANY RETURN TO U.S. MANDATORY COOL LABELING PROGRAM, THEY COULD  IMMEDIATELY, IMMEDIATELY INVOKE SANCTIONS AGAINST THE U,S., PER THE WTO  DISPUTE SETTLEMENT PANEL." "AS A MATTER OF FACT, THERE WAS A TRANSITION DOCUMENT THAT THE TRUMP TEAM HAD THAT  MENTIONED COOL. WE WERE ABLE TO GO IN AND TALK TO HIS AG ADVISORY TEAM TO TELL THEM HOW  MUCH OF A BAD IDEA THAT WAS AND HOW THAT WOULD HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON US AGAIN. WHILE  WE DON'T SEE ANYTHING IMMINENT, WE HAVE TO STAY DILIGENT. AT ANY POINT IN TIME, COOL COULD  COME BACK UP IN DISCUSSIONS."

NCBA WRAPS UP
THE CATTLE INDUSTRY CONVENTION AND NCBA TRADE SHOW IS WRAPPING UP IN  NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE. AND WITH A NEW YEAR COMES ANOTHER LOOK AT THE HEALTH OF THE CATTLE INDUSTRY AND WHAT'S FORECAST TO COME. BETSY  JIBBEN HAS A REPORT FROM THE SHOW. CLINTON, THE CATTLE MARKET HAS IMPROVED SINCE THE LOWS IN  OCTOBER. THOSE IN THE INDUSTRY TELL ME THE PRICES WE'VE SEEN OVER THE  PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS ARE BETTER THAN THEY THOUGHT. BUT SOME  PRODUCERS REMEMBER ALL TOO WELL THE PRICES OF THE PAST.  "I THINK PRODUCERS REALIZED WHEN THE MARKET WAS SO HIGH, IT WASN'T GOING TO LAST  FOREVER. THEY JUST DIDN'T KNOW THE ADJUSTMENT WOULD COME THIS QUICK,"> CATTLE PRICES HAVE COME DOWN FROM THE HIGHS OF 2013. BUT THE RECENT  RECOVERY RALLY OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS HAS BEEN BETTER THAN  EXPECTED. "WE'VE HAD A 24 PERCENT RALLY IN 5 MONTHS ON THE FAT BOARD AND A 20 PERCENT  RALLY ON THE FEEDER BOARD IN THE PAST 5 MONTHS. A LOT IS DRIVEN BY CASH FLOW AND THE TIGHTNESS.  MANAGED MONEY HERE NOW HAS PUT A HUGE LONG POSITION AND NEARING RECORD LENGTH AND NET  LONG POSITIONS FROM THE FUNDS HERE. THE BIG QUESTION IS IF THEY ARE WILLING TO CARRY THAT  POSITION MOVING FORWARD."> INDUSTRY LEADERS SAY THOSE PRICES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR LAY A  BETTER FOUNDATION FOR THE MARKET.  "ECONOMISTS I TALK TO SAY 2017 IS ACTUALLY GOING TO BE A BETTER YEAR THAN WHAT THEY FORECAST  JUST 2 MONTHS AGO. FEED YARDS ARE MAKING ROUGHLY 250 DOLLARS A HEAD THIS WEEK ACCORDING  TO STERLING PROFIT TRACKER. THAT'S A DRAMATIC TURNAROUND THAN A YEAR AGO." 40> HOWEVER, ANALYSTS SAY THREE BEARISH CATTLE REPORTS WERE RELEASED IN  JANUARY."WE HAVE A LOT OF FEEDERS PLACED RIGHT NOW. WE HAVE A LOT OF HEIFERS PLACED  RIGHT NOW. IT DOESN'T LOOK GOOD FOR BACK-MONTH FATS. AS OF RIGHT NOW, WHEN YOU SEE THE FUNDS  THAT LONG, MANAGED MONEY GETTING LONG, THREE BEARISH REPORTS IN A ROW DOESN'T LOOK FRIENDLY  INTO THE NEXT HALF OF THE YEAR,""THE THIRD QUARTER IS WHERE WE HAVE THE GREATEST LEVEL OF CONCERN RIGHT NOW.  WE'RE DIALING THAT BACK, LOOKING FOR A PRICE RANGE OF 90 TO 105 LEVELS FOR THE THIRD QUARTER AND  THE FOURTH QUARTER TO THE 1.05 TO 1.10 OR 1.15 LEVEL FOR A FOURTH QUARTER."> NO MATTER WHAT PRICE IS TO COME, BEEF SPECIALISTS AT FARM CREDIT  SERVICES OF AMERICA SAY PRODUCERS ARE STILL WORKING THROUGH THE  EQUITY THEY LOST OVER THE LAST COUPLE YEARS. "WE'VE SEEN A GREAT DEAL OF EROSION IN THE BEEF INDUSTRY. NOW WE'RE TRYING TO  BUILD SOME BALANCE SHEETS, GET SOME PROFITS BACK INTO THE OPERATION," "WHAT WE'VE SEEN INS THAT THE SAME PLAYERS IN THE INDUSTRY WHO ARE OWNING OR INCREASING THEIR HERD SIZE IN INCREMENTS, 10 PERCENT INCREMENTS, THINGS OF THAT NATURE. AS FAR  AS THE LOAN SIZE, IT'S COME DOWN FROM THE HIGH PRICES OF '14,"> A NEW REALITY BUT ONE WITHOUT AN END IN SIGHT. "MOST PEOPLE WHO PRODUCE CATTLE, THEY'RE IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL. THEY KNOW  THERE WILL BE UPS AND DOWNS, BUT RIGHT NOW, THEY HAVE TO PRODUCE THE BEST PRODUCT THEY CAN FOR THE GUYS WHO CAME HERE TO BUY THEM,"LOOK-LIVE: THERE ARE A LOT OF UNKNOWNS WITH TRADE AND POTENTIAL DEALS. INDUSTRY LEADERS SAY  ANY TYPE OF UNCERTAINTY WITH TRADE IS NOT GOOD FOR PRICE AND A GROWING BEEF SUPPLY NEEDS A  GROWING MARKET.WE'LL HAVE A STORY ON TRADE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. REPORTING FROM NASHVILLE, TN, I'M  BETSY JIBBEN.

CROP COMMENTS
LETE'S CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST MIKE HOFFMAN FOR THIS MORNING'S  CROP COMMENTS, MIKE. GOOD MORNING CLINTON. JAKE MICHAEL OF ROSSVILLE, INDIANA TWEETED OUT THIS SNAPSHOT. JAKE SAYS HE'S MOVING CORN WHILE THE BARN LOT IS STILL FROZEN AND NOT  BECOME A BIG MUD PIT. TEMPS WERE IN THE MID 20'S YESTERDAY. ALSO FROM TWITTER - DAVE HANSEN SHARED THIS PHOTO SHOWING FIELD TILE  GETTING INSTALLED.  WE DON'T HAVE A LOCATION BUT DAVE SAID 'FROST IS  NEARLY OUT OF THE FIELD". ..AND NOW HERE ARE SOME HOMETOWN TEMPS.

TEASE
EVER TIMELY--THE TEAM A PROFARMER JOIN US FOR A PROFIT BRIEFING ON THE  CATTLE INDUSTRY AND THE IMPACT OF THIS STRING OF RECENT NEGATIVE  REPORTS. AND YOU MIGHT THINK BATS CAN BE KINDA CREEPY - BUT THIS MECHANICAL  VERSION WON'T BITE. FIND OUT SOME POSSIBLE USES OF THIS AG-TECH LATER  ON AGDAY. AGDAY - BROUGHT TO YOU BY TOP THIRD AG MARKETING.  FARMER-FIRST, WITH A PLAN FOR EVERY  MARKET.

PRO FARMER PROFIT BRIEFING
WITH THE CATTLE INDUSTRY BUZZING IN NASHVILLE THIS WEEK, THE CREW OVER  PROFARMER COULDN'T HELP BUT JOIN THE CONVERSATION ABOUT PRICES.  GENTLEMEN. BRIAN WE WENT THROUGH A STRING OF USDA REPORTS FOR THE CATTLE INDUSTRY THAT WERE A LITTLE  NEGATIVE CATTLE HERD THAT THE COLD STORAGE REPORT WAS FIRST. BEEF STOCKS BIGGER THAN EXPECTED  CATTLE ON FEED REPORT BIG SURGE IN DECEMBER PLACEMENTS WERE UP EIGHTEEN PERCENT FROM THE  PREVIOUS YEAR AND THEN WE GET TO THE CATTLE INVENTORY REPORT WE ENDED UP WITH MORTON BEEF  CATTLE IN PARTICULAR OUT THERE. THE MORE WE ANTICIPATED MARKET TOOK IT PRETTY WELL YOU KNOW IT IT  HAS I HAS IT REACTED NEGATIVELY TO THE BEEF STOCKS IN THE CATTLE ON FEED NUMBER AND WE GOT A  GAP LOWER WITH THAT DATA BUT THE CATTLE INVENTORY NUMBERS WHICH HONESTLY PROBABLY MEAN  ABOUT THE MOST OF ANY IT REACTED RELATIVELY WELL LIKE YOU SAID BECAUSE WE ARE I HAD THE SHARP  LOSSES IN THE FUTURE 'S EAR I THINK WE NEED TO READ REMEMBER THAT THAT THAT THAT THE MARKET DID  A REALLY NICE JOB OF BUILDING IN THAT THAT COLD STORAGE IN THE CATTLE ON FEED REPORT THAT BY THE  TIME WE GET TO THE INVENTORY REPORT WE PUT WAY WE COULD HAVE THROWN JUST ABOUT ANYTHING AT  IT RIGHT YOU KNOW KEEP IN MIND NOW THAT SO NEGATIVE ON THE DEMAND SIDE OF THINGS NEGATIVE  ON THE SUPPLY SIDE OF THING SO YOU KNOW THAT THE CATTLE MARKET FACES MANY HURDLES RIGHT NOW  FROM BOTH SIDES. A FUNDAMENTALLY OK THAT CATTLE INVENTORY REPORT WHAT WAS THE A CATEGORY THAT  STOOD OUT MOST TO YOU WELL I WOULD SAY. BEEF REPLACEMENT HEIFERS. WE KNEW THAT THAT THE  CATTLE INVENTORY WAS UP IT JUST HAPPEN TO COME IN HIGHER THAN WHAT WAS ANTICIPATED. BUT ON  THE BEEF REPLACEMENTS THEY WERE EXPECTED TO COME IN JUST A LITTLE BIT DOWN ALMOST DOWN  ABOUT A FULL PERCENTAGE POINT AND THEY ENDED UP ABOUT ONE POINT TWO POINTS HIGHER THAN THAN  WHAT WAS ANTICIPATED SO UP AND YOU KNOW WE'VE HAD SOME HINTS EVERY QUARTER USDA GIVES  US NUMBERS ON ON HAVE FOR NUMBERS IN THE FELINES IN THE CATTLE ON FEED REPORT AND THAT IT  INDICATED THAT THE EXPANSION CYCLE HAD ENDED. AND DEFINITELY NOT THE CASE. WHEN WE GET TO  THE CATTLE INVENTORY REPORT SO I THINK THAT THAT 'S THE BIGGEST TAKE AWAY OK TWO THOUSAND  SIXTEEN CALF CROP UP THREE PERCENT FROM TWO THOUSAND FIFTEEN. WHAT 'S THAT MEAN FOR OUR FED  CATTLE PRICES GOING FORWARD WELL MORE SUPPLY MEANS LOWER PRICES AND I THINK THAT YOU CAN  EVEN EXTRAPOLATE FURTHER AND SAY THEY WERE GONNA HAVE A BIGGER CALF CROP WHEN WE LOOK IT AT  TWENTY SEVENTEEN HERE 'S ALL YOU'RE UP ABOUT TWO PERCENT MAYBE TWO AND A HALF PERCENT  DEPENDING ON WHERE THE NUMBERS FALL OUT HERE. ALRIGHT RIGHT IN THE CATTLE HERD HAS BOTTOMED  OUT I DON'T KNOW IF WE CAN SAY THAT ABOUT PRICES OR NOT ALRIGHT FOR BRIAN GRETE AND ALL THE  EDITORS OF PRO FARMER IN CEDAR FALLS IOWA I'M CHIP FLORY

WEATHER
ADD STRATEGO YIELD FUNGICIDE AT THE EARLY SEASON RATE TO YOUR POSTEMERGENCE HERBICIDE  TANK MIX. YOU'LL GET HEALTHIER FIELDS, HIGHER YIELDS AND A HIGHER RETURN ON INVESTMENT. WELCOME BACK TO AGDAY METEOROLOGIST MIKE HOFFMAN TAKING A LOOK AT  THE DROUGHT MONITOR MIKE, THAT AREA IN THE SOUTHERN PLAINS REALLY  OKLAHOMA STILL PRETTY DRY. IT'S A CONCERN. WE'VE OBVIOUSLY GOT  MOISTURE TO HELP THE OTHER DROUGHT AREAS BETTER THAT I REALLY HAVE  TO WATCH AS WE HEAD INTO THE GROWING SEASON. HOWEVER LET'S GO BACK  ONE MONTH AND SEE WHAT THINGS LOOKED LIKE AND YOU CAN SEE A MUCH  LARGER AREA OF DROUGHT IN THE SOUTHEAST. A LITTLE BIT LARGER IN THE  NORTHEAST THAN IT IS RIGHT NOW AND MUCH LARGER IN CALIFORNIA. BUT  ADDING IN THE MOISTURE THAT WE'VE HAD OVER THE PAST OH FOUR REACHING  SEE HOW THINGS HAVE SLOWLY IMPROVED IN THOSE AREAS AND IT'S IMPROVED  A LITTLE BIT ACROSS THE SOUTH CENTRAL PLAINS BUT STILL THERE AND IT 'S  SOMETHING OF A CONCERN AS WE HAD ANOTHER GROWING SEASON  ESPECIALLY FOR THE SOUTHERN PLAINS. WE'LL JUST HAVE TO SEE HOW THE NEXT MONTH OR TWO WORK OUT SO FAR AS WEATHER IS CONCERNED. RIGHT  NOW THOUGH WE'RE LOOKING AT A WEAK SYSTEM IN THE SOUTHEAST CAUSING  SOME SCATTERED LIGHT SHOWERS THIS ISN'T A LARGE AMOUNT OF RAIN DOWN  THERE A FEW FLURRIES FLYING IN A PART OF THE EASTERN GREAT LAKES AND  THE NEXT PRETTY GOOD STORM SYSTEM. THIS ONE 'S GOING TO A FIRST OF ALL  MOVE ANDN WEAKEN AS IT MOVES THROUGH THE NORTHERN PLAINS  EVENTUALLY BUT THEN ANOTHER SYSTEM COMES IN AS WELL. AND ALL OF THAT  ENERGY STARTS TO FEED INTO A DECENT SYSTEM IN THE EAST BY THE EARLY  PART OF NEXT WEEK. BUT IN THE MEANTIME HIGH PRESSURE DOMINATING MOST  OF THE PLAINS, OHIO VALLEY, GREAT LAKES IS WE HAVE THROUGH THE  AFTERNOON HOURS TODAY COOL FRONT WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS IN THE  SOUTHEAST. A LOT OF SNOW AGAIN OR THE ROCKIES AND THE HIGHER  ELEVATIONS OF THE WEST CENTRAL ROCKIES AND THEN THERE WILL BE RAIN  CLOSER TO THE COAST. BY TOMORROW MORNING THAT FIRST SYSTEM MOVING  INTO THE PLAINS AND EASTERN MONTANA A LITTLE BIT OF SNOW STARTING TO  BREAK OUT AHEAD OF IT SO THAT WARM FRONT THERE. AND AS YOU CAN SEE IS  A TIME MOVES EASTWARD THE SNOW SPREADS ACROSS PARTS OF MINNESOTA,  WISCONSIN AND PARTS OF MICHIGAN AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE DAY  TOMORROW AND IT WILL SPREAD FARTHER EAST AFTER THAT. NEXT STORM  SYSTEM COMING INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST MORE RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW FOR YOU FOLKS ONCE AGAIN. FRONT AND A STALLED OVER CENTRAL  FLORIDA WAS SO SPOTTY LIGHT SHOWERS THERE. PRECIPITATION ESTIMATES  OVER THE PAST TWENTY FOUR HOURS, LOOK AT THAT, NOT A WHOLE LOT  ACROSS THE COUNTRY BUT ALREADY STARTING TO SEE SOME OF THAT  NORTHERN CALIFORNIA ADDING IN THE NEXT THIRTY SIX HOURS AND SAY WE  JUST DON'T ADD TOO MUCH EAST OF THE ROCKIES UNTIL WE START TO GET THAT  SNOW IN THE NORTHEASTERN PLAINS BUT BOY DID WE ADD A WHOLE BUNCH  KNOWING CALIFORNIA WESTERN WASHINGTON AND OREGON IN THE HIGHER  ELEVATIONS OF THE NORTHERN ROCKIES. AND OF COURSE A LOT HIGHER  ELEVATIONS S MOSTLY SNOW PAST TWENTY FOUR HOURS SHOWING THAT  SCATTERED AMOUNTS IN THE EASTERN GREAT LAKES OTHERWISE IT IS MAINLY IN  THE ROCKIES. YOU SEE AS WE ADD IN THE NEXT THIRTY SIX HOURS MOST OF THE  GETS ADDED TO THE HIGHER PEAKS OF THE ROCKIES WITH SOME OF THAT BE  MEASURED IN FEET AND THEN WE START TO SEE THAT LIGHT SNOW BREAKING OUT ACROSS THE  WESTERN GREAT LAKES NORTHEASTERN PLAINS HIGH TEMPS THIS AFTERNOON  TEENS AND TWENTIES THROUGH THE NORTHERN TIER OF STATES FORTIES AND  FIFTIES ALONG THE GULF COAST ONLY FLORIDA IN THE SEVENTIES AND THE FAR  SOUTHWESTERN PORTIONS OF THE COUNTRY AS WELL. COOL AIR HAS MADE IT  DOWN INTO DIXIE AND WE'LL SEE THAT TONIGHT AS WELL WITH LOWS IN THE  LOWER THIRTIES FOR THE NORTHERN PORTIONS OF MISSISSIPPI, ALABAMA AND  GEORGIA. MAINLY TEAMS ARE FARTHER NORTH FROM THE OHIO VALLEY THROUGH THE GREAT LAKES AND THE NORTHERN PLAINS. HIGH TEMPERATURES  TOMORROW AFTERNOON AND WILL START TO SEE IT BECOMING A LITTLE MILDER  IN THE WESTERN PLAINS AGAIN WITH 50S SHOWING UP. STILL THIRTIES OVER  MOST OF THE NORTHEASTERN PLAINS OHIO VALLEY GREAT LAKES FIFTIES  ALONG THE GULF COAST IS WELL. THERE'S A JET STREAM AND YOU CAN SEE WE  HAVE SOME SYSTEMS COMING EAST. WE GO ZONAL FOR AWHILE OVER THE  WEEKEND THEN THIS STORM SYSTEM KIND OF COMES IN MONDAY AND TUESDAY  WEDNESDAY FOR THE GREAT LAKES IN THE NORTHEAST THAT WILL BE SOME  RAIN AND SNOW FOLLOWED BY A BLAST OF COLD BUT WHAT'S WE'RE NOT  STICKING IN WITH A PATTERN QUITE YET. THAT 'S A LOOK ACROSS THE COUNTRY  NOW LET 'S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME LOCAL FORECASTS. FIRST OF ALL FOR  BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIA MOSTLY CLOUDY A BRIEF SHOWER OR TWO HIGH OF  SIXTY NINE DEGREES. CARRINGTON NORTH DAKOTA PLENTY OF SUNSHINE  RATHER COLD HIGH OF ONLY FIFTEEN AND FINALLY GREENVILLE SOUTH  CAROLINA CLOUDS THEN BECOMING PARTLY SUNNY HIGH OF FORTY SEVEN.

TEASE
WE'LL TALK PLANTING EQUIPMENT FOR YOUR WHEAT DRILL WHEN AGDAY RETURNS. AND DID YOU GET ALL EXCITED WHEN YOU BOUGHT YOUR FIRST DRONE?   IMAGINE AN UPGRADE LIKE THIS ONE - IT CAN SOAR LIKE A BAT!

FARM JOURNAL COLLEGE TV
IT WON'T BE LONG BEFORE SPRING WHEAT WILL NEED TO BE PLANTED. IN TODAY'S FARM JOURNAL COLLEGE TV, WHEAT AGRONOMIST PHIL NEEDHAM  TELLS US ABOUT THE CHALLENGES OF GETTING A GOOD STAND IN A FIELD WITH  HEAVY RESIDUE. PHILS IT'S THIS FIELD ALREADY STARTED TO EMERGE BUT YOU CAN TELL BY LOOKING OUT HERE THAT THE THE  PLANTER REALLY HAD TO DEAL WITH SOME RESIDUE NOT JUST FROM ONE YEAR BUT FROM TWO YEARS THAT 'S  RIGHT AND IT 'S YOU KNOW A SUCCESSFUL WHEAT CROP ABSOLUTELY BEGINS AT SEEDING TIME MAYBE  BEFORE SEEDING TIME WITH RESIDUE DISTRIBUTION I WOULD LIKE TO TALK ABOUT HERE IS THE IMPORTANCE  OF THE SEEDING EQUIPMENT RIGHT AND ESPECIALLY THE DISK PLATES OK WELL EXPLAIN TO US WHY THOSE  ARE SO VITAL IN GETTING THIS UNIFORM STAND AS WE SEE HERE SURE SO WHAT WE TELL THEM AT NOW IS  A SINGLE DISK SEEDER THAT WHICH IS OBVIOUSLY A POPULAR SEEDER AND DESIGN ON THE MARKET  THERE'S DUAL DISK ALSO WHICH MOST OF THE SAME PRINCIPLES WOULD APPLY BUT FOR EXAMPLE AS  YOU'VE SAID ALREADY THAT 'S QUITE A BIT OF RESIDUE OUT HERE AND IF THE RESIDUES IT OFF AFTER RAIN OR HEAVY LIKE THIS IT ABSOLUTELY TAKES A SHARP DISK BLADE LIKE THIS TO BE ABLE TO CUT THROUGH THE  RESIDUE SO THAT'S A SHARP DISK BLADE IS ESSENTIAL BUT THERE'S OTHER COMPONENTS TO IT ALSO TAKES  ADEQUATE DOWN PRESSURE ALRIGHT SO THE SEEDER HAS TO CONVEY WEIGHT FROM THE FRAME OF THE  SEEDER AND DOWN ONTO THE DISK TO GET THE SHARP BLADE TO CUT BUT THEN IT ALSO TAKES BALLAST ON  THE SEEDER FRAME MOST LEADERS ON THE MARKET DON'T COME WITH ADEQUATE DOWN WE DON'T  COME WITH ADEQUATE FRAME WEIGHT THE FRAMES ARE HEAVY ENOUGH OK SO IT TAKES BALLAST IN THE  FORM OF A HUNDRED POUND WEIGHTS OR TRACTOR WHEEL WEIGHTS WHATEVER A COMBINATION OF THEM  THE ABOVE TO ADD THAT WEIGHT TO THE SEEDER THE SEEDER TO BE ABLE TO PUSH THAT BLADE INTO THE  GROUND UNTIL THE GAUGE WHEEL REACHES SOIL SURFACE SO YOU BASICALLY PUSHING THAT DISK BLADE  INTO THE SOIL UNTIL THAT GAUGE WHEEL REST FIRMLY ON THE SOIL SURFACE TO TO REGULATE SEEDING DEPTH

NEXT - SEE WHAT SCIENTISTS ARE TESTING IN THEIR LABS THAT COULD PUT  YOUR DRONE TO SHAME. IN THE COUNTRY IS NEXT. GET THE ROOTS YOUR CROPS NEED, BY GETTING RADIATE FIRST.  VISIT LOVELAND PRODUCTS.COM  SLASH RADIATE.  SEE YOUR CPS DEALER TODAY.

IN THE COUNTRY
IN THE COUNTRY - BROUGHT TO YOU BY KUBOTA.  SEE THE ALL-NEW KOMMANDER-PRO ZERO-TURN  MOWER AT KUBOTA.COM. IN A WORLD WHERE DRONES OR UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES OFTEN GET THE  MOST ATTENTION, A NEW ROBOT - THAT'S DESIGNED TO LOOK AND FLY LIKE A BAT  - IS GETTING ATTENTION. THE "BAT-BOT" - AS WE LIKE TO CALL IT -           HAS MULTIPLE MOVING PARTS WHICH  HELPS IT MANEUVER AND MIMIC THE UNIQUE AND FLEXIBLE WAYS BATS FLY. ITS  CREATORS SAY IT'S MORE AGILE, EFFICIENT AND SAFER THAN OTHER DRONES. THEY THINK THIS NEW ROBOT PROTOTYPE MAY DO A BETTER AND SAFER JOB  GETTING INTO DISASTER SITES AND SCOPING OUT CONSTRUCTION ZONES THAN  THOSE BULKY DRONES WITH SPINNING ROTORS. "THE SAME KIND OF TECHNOLOGY THAT WE USE FOR THIS KIND OF APPLICATION WE THINK COULD BE USED  IN DISASTER RESPONSE. FOR EXAMPLE, YOU CAN IMAGINE THESE KINDS OF ROBOTS EXPLORING DISASTER  SITES LIKE THE FUKUSHIMA REACTOR WHERE IT'S NOT REALLY POSSIBLE TO SEND HUMANS IN AND  BECAUSE OF THE DESTRUCTION, GROUND ROBOTS DON'T REALLY HAVE A CHANCE EITHER. SO WE THINK  THERE ARE A NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS LIKE THIS THAT ARE DIRECTLY BENEFICIAL TO HUMANITY."> THIS MECHANICAL BAT WEIGHS THREE OUNCES WITH A 15 INCH WING SPAN. IT  NEEDS FIVE MOTORS TO CONTROL THE WING FLAAPPING. EVENTUALLY, THE RESEARCHERS HOPE TO HAVE IT PERCH UPSIDE DOWN LIKE  THE REAL THING, BUT THAT WILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE ROBOT'S SEQUEL. ENGINEERS SAY BAT ROBOTS COULD BE FLYING AROUND WORK SITES AND  DISASTER ZONES WITHIN FIVE YEARS. INTERESTING TECHNOLOGY. CAN THEY PROGRAM IT TO EAT MOSQUITOS?

CLOSE
THAT'S ALL THE TIME WE HAVE THIS MORNING. WE'RE GLAD YOU TUNED IN.  FOR ALL OF US AT AGDAY. I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. HAVE A GREAT DAY.
