TODAY ON AGDAY
APRIL 8, 2015

OPEN HEADLINES:
IT'S BEEN SO DRY, I THINK EVERYBODY WILL BE READY TO PLANT WHEN IT'S TIME. THE NUMBER OF DEADLY BIRD FLU CASES IN THE NATION'S TOP TURKEY STATE CONTINUES TO MOUNT. IN AGRIBUSINESS.. WILL PROFIT MARGINS BE BETTER WITH CORN OR BEANS THIS YEAR? WE TAKE A LOOK. AND FROM TREE TAP TO BAR TAP - HEAR ABOUT THE GROWING MARKET OF MAPLE AT MICROBREWERIES. AGDAY-BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE DEPENDABLE, LONG LASTING CHEVY SILVERADO…
SOIL MOISTURE:
GOOD MORNING I'M BETSY JIBBEN IN FOR CLINTON GRIFFITHS. ABUNDANT MOISTURE APPEARS TO BE A COMMON FACTOR IN THE SOUTHEAST, WHILE THE GREAT PLAINS ARE GETTING DRIER. AND MUCH OF THE CORN BELT SEEMS TO BE JUST ABOUT RIGHT...AND THAT'S OUR TOP STORY ON AGDAY.
NEBRASKA PLANTING:
WELL, THE U.S. DROUGHT MONITOR SHOWS OVER 22 PERCENT OF NEBRASKA IS IN A MODERATE DROUGHT, THAT'S UP 20 PERCENT SINCE LAST WEEK...BUT DESPITE THE UPTICK, FARMERS WE TALKED TO IN SOUTH-CENTRAL NEBRASKA REMAIN PRETTY OPTIMISTIC.. ENOUGH MOISTURE IS THERE.
CANADA CASE:
THE CANADIAN FOOD INSPECTION AGENCY HAS PLACED AN ONTARIO FARM UNDER QUARANTINE AFTER A COMMERICAL TURKEY FLOCK TESTED POSITIVE FOR H-FIVE AVIAN FLU. THE CASE WAS DISCOVERED IN WOODSTOCK, ONTARIO WHICH IS IN THE SOUTHERN AREA OF THE PROVINCE. THIS IS THE FIRST KNOWN AND CONFIRMED CASE OF H-5 IN ONTARIO. ANIMAL HEALTH OFFICIALS HAVE YET TO VERIFY THE SPECIFIC STRAIN OF THE VIRUS. SIMILAR TO THE CASES IN THIS COUNTRY, THE TURKEY FARM EXPERIENCED SUDDEN DEATH OF BIRDS OVER SEVERAL DAYS. THE BIRDS ON THE INFECTED FARMS WERE EUTHANIZED.
AVIAN FLU UPDATE:
MEANWHILE, THE NATION'S TOP TURKEY PRODUCING STATE APPEARS TO BE "GROUND ZERO" FOR THE H-5-N-2 STRAIN OF AVIAN FLU. USDA SAYS ONE MORE COUNTY IN MINNESOTA HAS TWO SEPARATE CONFIRMED CASES OF THE PATHOGEN. THE MOST RECENT CASES ARE IN TURKEY FLOCKS IN CAN-DEE-YO-EE COUNTY. THAT'S ABOUT A HUNDRED MILES WEST OF THE TWIN CITIES. BETWEEN THE TWO OPERATIONS, ABOUT 52-THOUSAND TURKEYS WILL BE CULLED.
TEASE:
WHICH MAJOR GRAIN IS LIKELY TO SHOW A STRONGER PROFIT MARGIN THIS YEAR - CORN OR BEANS? WE'LL ANALYZE STRAIGHT AHEAD. PLUS A WELL-KNOWN HOTEL CHAIN WILL START TO ACCOMMODATE TO ITS CHICKENS AND HOGS.
SOUTH AM CROPS:
FROM OUR PARTNERS AT PROFARMER, IT APPEARS SOUTH AMERICA IS GETTING SOYBEAN YIELDS THAT ARE 'OFF THE CHARTS'.PROFARMER'S SOUTH AMERICAN CROP CONSULTANT RAISED THE SOYBEAN CROP PRODUCTION FORECAST FOR BRAZIL BY 500-THOUSAND METRIC TONS TO 93-AND-A-HALF MILLION. BRAZILIAN HARVEST IS ABOUT 80-PERCENT COMPLETE.
THE ARGENTINA CROP IS ALSO PUSHED HIGHER...BY A MILLION METRIC TONS. IT NOW COMES IN AT 58 MILLION DUE TO STRONG YIELD REPORTS. THE ARGENTINE CROP IS ABOUT TEN PERCENT COMPLETE.
ANALYSIS INTRO:
WITH EXPECTATIONS OF LOW GRAIN PRICES THIS YEAR, FARMERS WILL BE WATCHING THOSE PROFIT MARGINS CAREFULLY. WILL MARGINS BE BETTER ON SOYBEANS OR CORN THIS YEAR? WE TURN TO FARM DIRECTOR AL PELL FOR ANSWERS IN THIS MORNING'S ANALYSIS.

HERE'S SOMETHING YOU DON'T SEE EVERY DAY - HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD WAS TRANSFORMED INTO A RODEO, COMPLETE WITH COWBOYS AND BULL RIDING, FOR THE LOS ANGELES PREMIERE OF "THE LONGEST RIDE." THE MOVIE IS A LOVE STORY WITH A RODEO BACKDROP. ANIMAL ACTIVISTS FROM 'PETA' WERE THERE TO PROTEST THE MOVIE. EVEN SOME OF THE STARS OF THE MOVIE WEREN'T SURE WHY.
ITC BEER SYRUP:
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT, YESTERDAY WAS 'NATIONAL BEER DAY'. IT'S AN UN-OFFICIAL HOLIDAY BUT IT DOES CELEBRATE THE ENDING OF PROHIBITION IN 1933. THE LAW - SIGNED BY PRESIDENT FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT - WENT INTO EFFECT ON APRIL SEVENTH OF THAT YEAR. PEOPLE COULD BUY, SELL AND DRINK BEER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 12 YEARS.
.WITH THAT IN MIND, HOW ABOUT TRYING SOME BEER MADE FROM THE MAIN INGREDIENT OF REAL MAPLE SYRUP? MICHAEL HILL TELLS US ABOUT BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN TREE TAP AND BAR TAP.
CLOSE:
THAT'S ALL THE TIME WE HAVE THIS MORNING. WE'RE GLAD YOU TUNED IN.
