TODAY ON AGDAY
DEC. 9, 2015

OPENING HEADLINES:
A SCIENTIFIC BREAK THROUGH COULD HAVE A BIG IMPACT IN THE FIGHT AGAINST AN EXPENSIVE SWINE DISEASE. WEST COAST GETS RELIEF FROM DROUGHT...AND COULD BE GETTING A LOT MORE. WE LOVE THE TALK OF EL NINO. IT GETS EVERYONE FIRED UP. IN AGRIBUSINESS...NOT EVERYONE IS CONVINCED ARGENTINA ELECTIONS WILL MEAN A GLUT OF GRAIN.
I MAY BE ONE OF THE FEW THAT COMES TO SAY: LET'S SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
AND RESEARCHERS ARE STUDYING ESSENTIALS OILS AND THEIR POSSIBLE BENEFITS FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM.
PIG BREED RESISTANT TO “PURRS” VIRUS:
GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. BIG NEWS FOR THE PORK SECTOR WHICH HAS BATTLED AGAINST A DEVASTATING AND INCURABLE DISEASE KNOWN AS "PURRS". RESEARCHERS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI HAVE DEVELOPED A PIG BREED RESISTANT TO THE VIRUS.
SWINE INFECTED BY THE PORCINE REPRODUCTIVE AND RESPIRATORY SYNDROME VIRUS LOSE WEIGHT, RARELY REPRODUCE AND SUFFER HIGH MORTALITY RATES. IT WAS FIRST DETECTED IN THE UNITED STATES IN 1987. AND THERE IS NO KNOWN CURE FOR SWINE WHICH GET INFECTED WITH THE VIRUS.
MISSOURI RESEARCHERS, WITH HELP FROM SCIENTISTS AT KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY, RECENTLY RAISED A LITTER OF PIGS RESISTANT TO THE VIRUS. THE DEADLY DISEASE COST U-S FARMERS HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ANNUALLY. NATHAN HURST, WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI HAS MORE.
FOR YEARS, A VIRUS REFERRED TO AS PRRS (PURS), WHICH HAS NO CURE, HAS BEEN KILLING PIGS AND COSTING THE NORTH AMERICAN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMY, INCLUDING FARMERS, MILLIONS OF DOLLARS. FOR THE PAST 25 YEARS, THE VIRUS HAS INFECTED PIGS HERE IN NORTH AMERICA AND HAS COST PRODUCERS ON THE ORDER OF 5 TO 6 HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR."
THE DEADLY DISEASE, CALLED PORCINE REPRODUCTIVE AND RESPIRATORY SYNDROME, STUNTS' PIGS GROWTH AND CAUSES RESPIRATORY AND REPRODUCTIVE PROBLEMS. NOW, RESEARCHERS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI HAVE FOUND A WAY TO BREED PIGS WHICH ARE NOT HARMED BY THE DEADLY DISEASE.
THE MIZZOU SCIENTISTS HAVE DONE THIS BY EDITING A GENE WITHIN THE PIGS CALLED C-D-163. SO WHEN WE WERE WANTING TO TARGET CD163, THERE WAS A SPECIFIC DNA SEQUENCE THAT WE WANTED TO MODIFY, AND WE DESIGNED GUIDES THAT WOULD LEAD TO THAT SPECIFIC LOCATION AND MODIFY THAT SPECIFIC LOCATION. C-D-163 CREATES A PROTEIN THAT ALLOWS THE PRRS VIRUS TO INFECT CELLS WITHIN PIGS. BY PREVENTING THIS PROTEIN FROM BEING CREATED, THE SCIENTISTS EFFECTIVELY IMMUNIZED THE PIGS. "WE USED SOME OF THESE NEW GENETIC EDITING TECHNOLOGIES TO DISRUPT THAT GENE SO THAT THERE IS NO PROTEIN PRODUCED. THESE PIGS ARE LACKING A SINGLE PROTEIN AND THEY APPEAR TO BE PERFECTLY HEALTHY. WHEN WE CHALLENGED THEM WITH THE PRRS VIRUS, WITH OUR COLLABORATORS AT KANSAS STATE, THE PIGS ACTED LIKE THEY NEVER SAW THE VIRUS. THEY WERE IN A PEN WITH OTHER WILD TYPE PIGS THAT GOT SICK, THAT COUGHED, THAT COUGHED ON THESE PIGS, BUT THESE PIGS SHOWED NO SIGN OF INFECTION." "TO PUT IT IN A NUTSHELL, WE WERE ABLE TO MAKE PIGS THAT ARE RESISTANT TO AN OTHERWISE INCURABLE DISEASE, AN UNTREATABLE DISEASE. THIS COULD SAVE THE INDUSTRY HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS EVERY YEAR."
THE RESEARCHERS SAY THAT, PENDING FEDERAL APPROVAL, IN A FEW YEARS, NORTH AMERICAN FARMERS COULD ALL HAVE HERDS OF PIGS WHICH ARE NOT AFFECTED BY THIS DEADLY DISEASE. FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI, I'M NATHAN HURST REPORTING.
PRATHER AND THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI RECEIVED A GRANT FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TO FUND THIS RESEARCH.
EL NINO BRINGS RAIN:
EL NINO STARTING TO RAMP UP RAINS OUT WEST. PORTLAND, OREGON RECORDING ITS WETTEST DAY IN RECORDED HISTORY. 2 POINT 7 INCHES FALLING MONDAY TYING ITS RECORD FOR ONE DAY SET BACK IN 1996. THE STORM CAUSING FLOODS, LANDSLIDES, ROAD CLOSURES AND EVEN A SINKHOLE. OF COURSE, RAIN IS WELCOME RELIEF ALONG THE ENTIRE WEST COAST. AND IF EL NINO SETS-UP AS IT'S BEING FORECASTED, IT COULD BRING ABUNDANCE OF RAIN AND SNOW TO CALIFORNIA. METEOROLOGISTS SAY IT WOULD GO A LONG WAY TO HELP EASE THE STATES' DROUGHT. IN CALIFORNIA SKI COUNTRY, EARLY SNOWFALL ALLOWED RESORTS TO OPEN WEEKS EARLIER THAN USUAL THIS SEASON.  "THE FIRST STORMS THAT HAVE COME THROUGH ARE NOT ATTRIBUTABLE TO EL NINO. THE EFFECT DOESN'T EVEN START UNTIL THE NEW YEAR. SO TO THINK THAT WE HAVE THIS START AND WHAT'S POTENTIALLY TO COME HAS GOT EVERYONE INCREDIBLY FIRED UP." SNOWFALL IN THE SIERRAS IS CRUCIAL AS THE SPRING MELT REFILLS MAJOR RESERVOIRS MILLIONS OF CALIFORNIANS RELY ON FOR WATER. BUT FORECASTERS SAY WHILE A STRONG EL NINO WEATHER SYSTEM COULD DRENCH CALIFORNIA IN THE COMING MONTHS, ONE GOOD WINTER MIGHT NOT BE ENOUGH TO REHYDRATE THE PARCHED STATE.
CROP WATCH:
LET'S CHECK IN NOW WITH CINDI CLAWSON, GOOD MORNING CINDI LET'S START OFF CROPWATCH IN EAST-CENTRAL IOWA.
A FARMER POSTED ON AGWEB HIS LAST STRETCH OF HARVEST IS DRAGGING ON. THE AREA RECEIVED 10 INCHES OF SNOW. THAT HAS SINCE MELTED. NOW THE AREA HAS RECEIVED RAIN.. THIS FARMER SAYS HE'S STILL PUSHING TO FINISH UP HARVEST. MOVING OVER TO ONTARIO, CANADA. ANDY PASZTOR SAYS OAT CONDITIONS ARE GREAT, ESPECIALLY FOR DECEMBER!
AS YOU CAN SEE THE AREA DOESN'T HAVE ANY SNOW, BUT THE AREA HAS EXPERIENCED SOME RAIN! WELL COMING UP IN JUST A FEW MINUTES WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO TALK ABOUT THAT ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN THAT IS IN PLACE FEEDER CATTLE FUTURES CONTINUING TO BE ROCKED IN CHICAGO.
CME:
TRADE SPENDING MOST OF THE DAY LOWER AT THE CME, WITH THE JANUARY CONTRACT CLOSING MONDAY AT ITS LOWEST POINT IN 2 YEARS.
LIVE CATTLE FUTURES ALSO LOWER--DROPPING NEARLY 6 PERCENT SINCE LAST WEEK. TEPID DEMAND FOR BEEF AT THE RETAIL MARKET CONTINUES TO WEIGH ON MARKETS. LOWER PRICED PORK AND POULTRY LIMITING HEAVY BUYING OF BEEF. WHEN WE COME BACK WE'RE GOING TO CIRCLE BACK AROUND TO GRAINS AND THE PENDING POLICTICAL CHANGES IN SOUTH AMERICA AND HOW THAT COULD IMPACT GRAIN TRADE AND PRICES HERE AT HOME.
AND LATER THEY'RE KNOWN AS ESSENTIAL OILS BUT CAN THEY REALLY HELP KIDS WITH AUTISM LIVE HEALTHIER LIVES? DOCTORS IN OHIO ARE DOING THE RESEARCH. THAT STORY LATER ON AGDAY.
RECIEVE A FREE TRIAL OF THE DAILY MARKET LETTER AND GAIN KNOWLEDGE ABOUT CURRENT MARKET CONDITIONS FROM THE PROFESSIONALS AT BOWER TRADING. VIEW THE MARKETS LIKE NEVER BEFORE. GO TO BOWERTRADING DOT COM.
IN AGRIBUSINESS IT WAS ANOTHER MIXED DAY IN MARKETS. LETS SEE HOW THINGS CLOSED FROM THE FLOOR OF THE CME.
TUESDAY GRAIN WE SEE A LITTLE BIT OF MIXED MARKET. SOYBEANS A BIT LOWER, WHEAT LOWER, CORN A BIT HIGHER. BUT ALL EYES ARE WAITING ON TOMORROW'S USDA GRAINS REPORT. AND QUITE FRANKLY I DON'T CARE. I THINK THE REPORT MEANS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND WHERE WE ARE IN THE OVERALL MARKET CYCLE, YOU'LL LEARN THAT THESE REPORTS ARE MORE NOISE AND ARE NOT WORTHY. COULD IT CREATE SOME VOLATILITY?
YEA YOU COULD SEE SOME QUICK VOLATILITY AND QUICK SPIKES IF YOU'RE AN ACTIVE TRADER AND WANT TO TAKE A SHOT AROUND LIMIT ON BOTH SIDES YOU COULD PLAY WITH IT. BUT OVERALL AS A PRODUCER OR FARMER OR LONGER TERM TRADER, WE'RE STILL BUYERS DOWN HERE. WE GOT A DOLLAR THAT'S OUT OF CONTROL, A FED THAT HAS NO IDEA, YET HERE WE ARE, HANGING IN THESE SAME LEVELS THAT WE'VE BEEN FOR MONTHS. NOW COULD THEY GO A BIT LOWER? SURE. BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, I WANT TO BE A BUYER OF CORN AT 3.70, WHEAT 4.68, 4.70. SOYBEANS AROUND 8.60. IF YOU'RE A PRODUCER OR A FARMER, I THINK YOU WANT TO HOLD IF YOU HAVE STORAGE SPACE. OTHER THAN THAT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A HEDGE ON. THAT'S THE WAY I SEE IT. THIS IS TODD HORWITZ, BUBBA TRADING DOT COM, COMING TO YOU FROM THE CME GROUP FLOOR IN CHICAGO.
AGRIBUSINESS:
ANGIE SETZER, OUR GUEST HERE TODAY. SHE'S WITH CITIZEN GRAIN. ANGIE, LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS SOUTH AMERICAN SITUATION AND THE ELECTIONS IN ARGENTINA. THERE'S A LOT OF TALK ABOUT HOW THAT COULD REALLY CHANGE THE DYNAMIC GLOBALLY FOR GRAIN TRADE. WHAT DO YOU THINK?> I MAY BE ONE OF THE FEW THAT COMES AND TO SAY: LET'S SEE WHAT HAPPENS.> OK, EXPLAIN.> YOU KNOW, REALLY WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT WE HAVE HAD THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES IN EVERY COUNTRY OF THE WORLD OVER THE YEARS COME OUT AND SAY: I'M GOING TO DO THESE THINGS, I'M GOING TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THESE STEPS AND I'M GOING TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN. IT'S ODD TO ME THAT THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE OR PRESIDENTIAL ELECT, MACRI NOW IS SUDDENLY THE FIRST PRESIDENT IN HISTORY THAT'S GOING TO FOLLOW THROUGH ON CAMPAIGN PROMISES ONCE HE'S IN OFFICE. SO THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS THAT ARE REALLY GOING TO KIND OF BE A HINDRANCE TO HIM I BELIEVE. YOU KNOW, THERE'S BEEN TALK THAT HE IS GOING TO COME IN AND ADJUST THE CURRENCY AND ALLOW IT TO FREE FLOAT AND PERHAPS BRING IT DOWN TO LOW LEVELS HELPING TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE INCREASE IN EXPORTS FORM THE COUNTRY, BUT NO ONE MENTIONS THAT FOR ONE: HE'S THE THIRD NON-PERONIST CANDIDATE TO WIN OR PERONIST--HOWEVER YOU WANT TO SAY IT AND THE LAST GUY THAT CAME IN AND SAID THAT  HE WAS GOING TO ADJUST THE CURRENCY AND ALLOW FREE FLOAT WAS BASICALLY TAKEN OUT VIA MILITARY COUP, SO HE'S GOT TO TREAD PRETTY LIGHTLY WHEN IT COMES TO ECONOMICS; SECONDARILY, I REALLY KIND OF WONDER, UM THE REMOVAL OF THESE TAXES ARE ANYWHERE... THEY CONTRIBUTE ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20-30 PERCENT OF THE GOVERNMENTS REVENUE.> RIGHT, THAT'S A BIG NUMBER.> IT'S A HUGE NUMBER AND WHEN NEARLY HALF OF YOUR CITIZENSHIP RELIES ON GOVERNMENT SERVICES AND THINGS LIKE THAT, YOU ARE REALLY GOING TO HAVE TO TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHERE THIS REVENUES GOING TO COME FROM. SO SOME WILL SAY THE INCREASE IN TAXES WILL HELP GENERATE MORE MONEY ON THE FARM INCOME ETC., ETC., I REALLY NEED TO SEE HOW IT'S GOING TO PLAY OUT BEFORE I THINK IT MAKES A MAJOR ADJUSTMENT LIKE SOME ARE CALLING FOR.> SO YOU ARE KIND OF JUST CAUTIOUS AND TRYING TO BE REALISTIC ABOUT WHAT REALLY HAPPENS> YES, ON TOP OF THAT ARGENTINA RIGHT NOW IS HOLDING ON TO 37 PERCENT OF THE WORLD'S SOYBEAN STOCKS AND THEY HAVE BEEN FOR MULTIPLE YEARS, SO I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE HELD SOYBEANS FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, BUT UNLESS THEY ARE PUT AWAY UNDER PRETTY GOOD CONDITIONS AND THEY ARE HELD IN PRETTY GOOD CONDITIONS--YOU CAN LOSE SOME OF THAT QUALITY, SO ARGENTINA COULD HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF A CHINA PROBLEM WHEN IT COMES TO ACTUALLY OPENING UP SOME OF THOSE GRAIN BAGS AND GETTING THEM MOVED. SO WE WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS AND OF COURSE YOUR PIPELINE CAN ONLY HANDLE SO MUCH, SO IT'S NOT AS THOUGH WE ARE GOING TO WAKE UP ON DEC. 11 AND SEE ARGENTINA WITH SUPPLYING THE GLOBAL MARKET WITH ALL OF THEIR GRAIN.> ALL RIGHT, GOOD PERSPECTIVE. THANK YOU, ANGIE. WE WILL BE BACK WITH MORE AGDAY IN JUST A FEW MINUTES.

NATIONAL WEATHER:
WELCOME BACK TO AGDAY. CINDI CLAWSON FILLING IN FOR MIKE HOFFMAN TODAY. CINDI THAT PATTERN OUT WEST JUST KEEPS COMING RIGHT. YES, IT'S A VERY TYPICAL EL NINO PATTERN. THEY ARE JUST GETTING HAMMERED WITH TONS OF RAIN AND WE'RE GOING TO SEE ANOTHER ROUND OF RAIN TODAY AND YET ANOTHER ONE IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. SO, IT JUST ISN'T GOING TO END. AND THAT'S TYPICAL FOR EL NINO. LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THE MAPS AND SHOW YOU WHAT'S GOING ON. AND YOU'LL SEE THAT WE HAVE A FRONT THAT'S BEEN MOVING THROUGH THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. AND WE HAD ONE JUST A DAY OR SO AGO. SO, IT'S GOING TO BE JUST A SERIES OF SYSTEMS MOVING IN AND BRINGING AND UPPER ELEVATION SNOW TO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. FURTHER TO THE EAST, WE HAVE A SYSTEM MOVING THROUGH THE GREAT LAKES, NOT QUITE SO MUCH MOISTURE WITH THAT. MOST OF THAT WILL STICK TO OUR FAR NORTHERN STATES. AS WE PUSH ON THROUGH WEDNESDAY AND ON THROUGH THURSDAY. THAT WILL BRING ON PROGRESS. WE WILL SEE SOME SPOTTY RAIN HERE. THAT'S UPPER ELEVATION SNOW IN THE WEST AS THAT CONTINUES TO PUSH TO THE EAST. WATCH WHAT HAPPENS AS WE GET ANOTHER LARGE SYSTEM COMING INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. A LOT MORE RAIN EXPECTED THERE. THIS ONE STARTS TO MOVE ACROSS THE NORTHERN STATES AND INTO THE UPPER MIDWEST. THE SERIES OF SYSTEMS MOVING ONE BY ANOTHER. THEN WE ARE GOING TO BE SEEING A VERY LARGE STORM SYSTEM FORM ON THE NATION'S MID-SECTION AS WE HEAD INTO THE WEEKEND. AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE DAY ON THURSDAY, WE WILL CONTINUE TO SEE SOME RAIN, A LITTLE BIT OF SNOW FOR PARTS OF THE UPPER MIDWEST. BUT RAIN AND SNOW FOR MUCH OF THE WEST ON THURSDAY. HERE'S A LOOK OF THE PRECIPITATION ESTIMATE AND BOY YOU'RE GOING TO SEE IT LIGHT UP IN THE NORTHWEST. IT'S NOT QUITE SO MUCH INTO THE GREAT LAKES. AND INTO THE MID-ATLANTIC. THE BIG FOCUS IS GOING TO BE RIGHT ALONG THE WEST COAST THERE. THE NORTHWEST COAST WHERE A VERY LARGE AMOUNT OF RAIN AND WELL OVER THREE INCHES IN SOME AREAS. AS FAR AS THE SNOWFALL IS CONCERNED, THESE ARE THE AREAS WE START TO SEE THE SNOW. YOU CAN SEE THE SNOW AND SAY THAT INTO THE ROCKIES AND A LITTLE BIT DIPPING INTO NORTHERN MINNESOTA. TEMPERATURE-WISE, FOR THE MOST PART, IT'S PRETTY MILD IN MOST AREAS. WE ARE SEEING A LOT OF 50S AND 60S AND EVEN 70S ACROSS THE SOUTHERN STATES. AND EVEN IN THE OVERNIGHT HOURS, WE DON'T SEE FRIGID AIR IN PLACE. A LOT OF 30S AND 40S AND 50S FOR THE MOST PART OTHER THAN THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS. AS WE HEAD THROUGH OUR TEMPERATURES TOMORROW, VERY SIMILAR, IN FACT IT'S A LITTLE WARMER IN OUR NATION'S MID-SECTION AND HEADING TO THE EAST. THAT WILL BE A TREND OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. LOOKING A LITTLE FURTHER IN THE FUTURE, WE CONTINUE TO SEE WAVES IN THE JET STREAM. THERE'S THE NEXT ONE. THERE'S THE BIGGER AS WE GET INTO THE WEEKEND, THAT WILL START TO BRING DOWN COOLER AIR AS WE START NEXT WEEK AND ANOTHER TROUGH COMING THROUGH NEXT WEEK. WE WILL START TO SEE COLDER AIR COMING BACK INTO THE NATION'S EASTERN PART OF THE COUNTRY. THAT'S A LOOK AT YOUR NATIONAL FORECAST. NOW LET'S CHECK OUT SOME LOCAL CITIES.
TUCUMCARI, NEW MEXICO, SUNNY AND WARM FOR YOU TODAY WITH A HIGH OF 72 DEGREES. TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN, SOME SHOWERS FOR YOU WITH A HIGH OF 46 DEGREES. AND CARIBOU, MAINE IS PARTLY CLOUDY AND COOLER, FOR THE HIGH OF 32.

STILL TO COME, LEADERS IN PARIS MAY HAVE THEIR OWN IDEA ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE BUT WHAT DO AMERICAN FARMERS THINK.
TEASE:
AND LATER, POTENTIAL CURE OR PLACEBO? RESEARCHERS IN OHIO ARE LOOKING AT ESSENTIAL OILS AND THEIR POSSIBLE BENEFITS FOR PARENTS OF AUTISITC CHILDREN.
FIND YOUR NEXT PIECE OF EQUIPMENT AT MACHINERY PETE.COM AND ENTER FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN A YETI COLLER. ONE YETI TUNDRA 35 COOLER IS BEING GIVEN AWAY EACH WEEK. GO TO WWW.MACHINERYPETE.COM/SURVEY, COMPLETE THE SURVEY, AND ENTER YOUR INFORMATION. YOU COULD BE NEXT OWNER OF A MACHINERY PETE YETI COOLER.
CLIMATE CHANGE NOT A SERIOUS PROBLEM ACCORDING TO 80 PERCENT OF FARMERS POLLED:
MEETINGS IN PARIS ON A CLIMATE SOLUTIONS ARE NOW IN THEIR FINAL STRETCH.... A NEW FARM JOURNAL PULSE ASKED AMERICAN FARMERS AND RANCHERS THEIR THOUGHTS. THE INSTANT POLL FINDS THAT NEARLY 80 (78) PERCENT OF RESPONDENTS SAY THEY DON'T THINK CLIMATE CHANGE IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM.
JUST 22 PERCENT SAY YES...IT IS.
THE PULSE SURVEYED NEARLY 18-HUNDRED FARMERS. THIS NEARLY ECHO'S A POLL OUR FRIENDS AT AGRITALK TOOK A COUPLE WEEKS AGO. ROUGHLY 80 (80.65) PERCENT OF RESPONDENTS ATTRIBUTE OF CLIMATE CHANGE TO NATURAL CYCLES.
ANOTHER 20 (19.35) SAY HUMANS ARE THE CAUSE.
OIL PRICES CONTINUING TO FALL:
OIL PRICES CONTINUE TO FALL--MONDAY, DIPPING NEAR A SEVEN-YEAR LOW.
EXPECTATIONS THAT PRODUCERS AROUND THE WORLD WILL CONTINUE PUMPING CRUDE AT NEAR-RECORD LEVELS IN AN ALREADY OVERSUPPLIED MARKET ADDING NEW PRESSURE.
WARM WEATHER ALSO LOWERING EXPECTATIONS FOR FUEL CONSUMPTION THIS WINTER. WHILE MUCH OF THE ATTENTION ON THE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABELING LAW HAS FOCUSED ON BEEF, PORK, AND POULTRY, OTHER SECTORS OF AGRICULTURE ARE LIKELY TO FEEL THE IMPACT OF TARIFFS.
ACCORDING TO OUR BRAND NEW REPORTING PARTNERS FROM "THE PACKER", FRESH PRODUCE WILL ALSO BE TARGETED IF "COOL" IS NOT REPEALED.
AS WE FIRST REPORTED, AN ARBITRATOR FROM THE WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION SAYS CANADA AND MEXICO HAVE THE RIGHT TO LEVEE RETALIATORY TARIFFS ON A VARIETY OF AG PRODUCTS, TOTALLING MORE THAN A BILLION DOLLARS. LAST YEAR, CANADA PUBLISHED A LIST OF POSSIBLE TARGETS. AND IT INCLUDES FRESH CHERRIES AND APPLES.
IN A STORY PUBLISHED BY "THE PACKER", THE U-S APPLE ASSOCIATION IS PUSHING U-S LAWMAKERS TO REPEAL "COOL".
THE PACKER SAYS THAT REPEAL COULD BE INCLUDED IN THE OMNIBUS LEGISLATION. THE APPLE ASSOCIATION SAYS THAT MAY BE BEST CHANCE OF GETTING THE MATTER RESOLVED BEFORE TARIFFS GET IMPLEMENTED.
NEXT, WE'VE "STRUCK" OIL -ESSENTIAL OILS, THAT IS -WHEN IT COMES TO CALMING THE KIDS.
ENTER TO WIN THIS YAMAHA KODIAK 700 EPS -A GREAT TOOL TO HAVE ON THE FARM. JUST GO TO AGDAY.COM AND CLICK ON THE LINK TO GET DETAILS.
DEADLINE IS DECEMBER 16TH SO DON'T DELAY.
ESSENTIAL OILS HELPING KIDS WITH AUTISM:
PARENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY CLAIM THAT ESSENTIAL OILS LIKE LAVENDER AND SANDALWOOD--HELP KIDS WITH AUTISM STAY CALMER AND SLEEP BETTER.
THEIR CLAIMS CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF SCIENTISTS--WHO HAVE JUST LAUNCHED A STUDY TO SEE IF THOSE OILS TRULY WORK.
CLARK POWELL HAS DETAILS...IN THIS REPORT FROM THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY WEXNER MEDICAL CENTER.
EVENINGS USED TO BE A CHALLENGE FOR 12-YEAR-OLD SAM COCONIS. SAM HAS AUTISM AND WOULD USE THINGS LIKE ELECTRONICS TO DISTRACT HIMSELF AND DELAY HIS BEDTIME. SO, HIS MOTHER STARTED USING ESSENTIAL OILS PUTTING THINGS LIKE LAVENDER AND FRANKINCENSE ON HIS HEAD AND FEET. NOW, SAM'S BEDTIME BATTLES ARE OVER. ' "HE'S GOTTEN SO MUCH BETTER. IF I HAVE TO GO UP MAYBE ONCE TO TELL HIM TO STAY IN HIS ROOM THAT'S IT, VERSUS 10 TO 15 TIMES BEFORE." AND SHANNON'S NOT ALONE. ONLINE, TALK OF ESSENTIAL OILS AND AUTISM IS VIRTUALLY EVERYWHERE -FROM PERSONAL BLOGS TO PARENT SUPPORT SITES. THEY ARE REPORTING THAT THEY'VE SEEN IMPROVEMENTS IN QUALITY OF LIFE AND TRANSITIONING IN THEIR CHILDREN THROUGHOUT THE DAY. BUT THESE ARE ANECDOTAL". SO JILL HOLLWAY IS PUTTING THEM TO THE TEST. AT THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY WEXNER MEDICAL CENTER'S NISONGER CENTER, RESEARCHERS ARE STUDYING 2 MIXTURES OF 18 DIFFERENT ESSENTIAL OILS -TO NOT ONLY SEE IF THEY'RE SAFE FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM, BUT IF THERE'S PROOF THEY WORK. DURING THE STUDY, PARENTS RUB OIL ON THEIR CHILDREN IN THE MORNING, THEN USE A DIFFUSER IN THEIR BEDROOMS AT NIGHT. TO SEE WHAT EFFECT THE OILS HAVE ON SLEEP, CHILDREN WEAR A WATCH-LIKE DEVICE CALLED AN ACTIGRAPH THAT RECORDS ACTIVITY LEVELS. "WHAT WE FIND IS A LOT OF THESE CHILDREN WAKE UP DURING THE NIGHT, AND IT WILL CAPTURE THOSE TIMES. SO IT'S GOT THE MINUTES AWAKE, MINUTES ASLEEP, ETCETERA." THE STUDY WILL TAKE A COUPLE OF YEARS TO COMPLETE. IN THE MEANTIME, MOMS LIKE SHANNON SAY THEY APPRECIATE THAT RESEARCHERS HAVE TAKEN A CUE FROM THEM -AND ARE WILLING TO STUDY LESS CONVENTIONAL FORMS OF THERAPY. "THERE ARE SO MANY OF US, THOUSANDS OF US PARENTS ACROSS THE WORLD THAT ARE TREATING OUR KIDS WITH AUTISM. I COMMEND THEM IMMENSELY. AT OHIO STATE'S WEXNER MEDICAL CENTER, THIS IS CLARK POWELL REPORTING. THANKS CLARK. RESEARCHER TO TEST MORE THAN 2 DOZEN KIDS WITH THE OIL COMBINATIONS OVER A 2 YEAR PERIOD.
CLOSING:
