CHRISTMAS IN THE WHITE HOUSE
HELLO AND WELCOME TO CHRISTMAS IN THE COUNTRY. I'M TYNE MORGAN. AND I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. THE CHRISTMAS TREE IS OFTEN THE FOCAL POINT  OF HOLIDAY DECORATIONS.  FROM THE NATION'S CAPITOL TO YOUR HOME,  TANNENBAUMS HELP CELEBRATE  THIS JOYOUS SEASON. AT THE WHITE HOUSE, A 50 YEAR OLD TRADITION IS BEING HONORED WITH THE  OLD-STYLE DELIVERY OF A 19 FOOT DOUGLAS FIR. IT CAME FROM A TREE FARM IN  WISCONSIN. THE NATIONAL CHRISTMAS TREE ASSOCIATION FIRST PROVIDED THE WHITE  HOUSE 'BLUE ROOM' CHRISTMAS TREE IN 1966. COINCIDENTALLY, THAT TREE  ALSO CAME FROM WISCONSIN.

DULLS TREE FARM
WE'RE NOW OFF TO BOONE COUNTY, INDIANA WHERE DULL'S CHRISTMAS TREE  FARM IS ANYTHING BUT DULL. THE OWNERS HAVE WORKED FOR THREE DECADES TO CREATE AN EXPERIENCE  THAT GLISTENS THROUGH-OUT THE SEASON. IT'S "GO TIME" AT DULLS CHRISTMAS TREE FARM. "WE NEVER THINK WE'RE READY BUT IT'S GOING TO COME AROUND ANYHOW.  WE'RE READY, YEA. DURING THE MAD-DASH OF THE SIX WEEK SELLING SEASON, THOUSANDS OF  FRESHLY CUT TREES WILL GO THROUGH THESE BARN DOORS. I LIKE DOING BEHIND THE SCENES THINGS, WORKING IN THE TREES, PLANTING,  SHEARING, TAKING CARE OF THE TREES."DURING THEIR FIRST-MARRIED CHRISTMAS IN 1982, TOM AND KERRY DULL HAD  TO DRIVE 30 MILES TO GET A FRESH-CUT TREE. THEY SAW AN OPPORTUNITY. IN 1985 THEY PLANTED THEIR FIRST TREES, KNOWING IT WOULD BE AT EIGHT  YEARS BEFORE THEY COULD HARVEST. BUT THE WAIT IS WORTH IT...GIVEN THE  JOY IT BRINGS. "WHEN PEOPLE COME OUT TO GET A TREE, THEY'RE HAPPY. IT'S A FUN EXPERIENCE. THEY'RE  HAPPY....THEY WANT TO BE HERE."SINCE THEN, THEY'VE EXPANDED THEIR BUSINESS BEYOND TREES. INSIDE THE WREATH BARN - THE HOLIDAY HELP IS BUSY CREATING COLORFUL  SWAGS AND GARLAND. "I NEED SOME NICE PIECES OF FRASIER...."JODY DURHAM HAS BEEN WORKING AT DULL'S FOR 21 YEARS. AND GET THIS - SHE  USES VACATION DAYS FROM HER JOB AT THE BANK TO WORK HERE.... "RELIEVES ALL MY STRESS...MAKES ME GET INTO THE CHRISTMAS SEASON."THE WREATH BUSINESS STARTED IN THE GARAGE, BUT INSIDE CRAMPED QUARTERS,  CUSTOMERS COULD'NT SEE FIRST-HAND THE THE CUSTOM ARRANGEMENTS. "WHEN WE MOVED THE ENTIRE BIZ OUT HERE, AND ALLOWED PEOPLE TO WALK  THRU AND TALK TO WREATH MAKERS AND DECORATORS, OUR BUSINESS IN THE  WREATH BARN DOUBLED."IN ADDITION TO THEIR RETAIL TREE BUSINESS, THE DULLS ARE ALSO STATE  COORDINATORS FOR THE ANNUAL "TREES FOR TROOPS" CAMPAIGN WHICH  PROVIDES CHRISTMAS TREES TO MILITARY BASES AROUND THE WORLD.  AS PART OF THE FAMILY'S DIVERSIFIED OPERATION,  TOM IS A ROW-CROP  FARMER - A COUPLE THOUSAND ACRES OF CORN AND SOYBEANS. HARVEST  WEATHER COOPERATED THIS FALL, BUT THAT'S NOT ALWAYS THE CASE. "IN OUR 23 YEARS WE'VE SOLD TREES, THERE' BEEN TWO YEARS WHERE CORN  HARVEST OVERLAPSED TREE SALES. AND I TELL YOU THOSE ARE STRESSFUL  YEARS WHEN THAT HAPPENS."THE TEMPORARY STRESS SOON MAKES-WAY FOR THE 'REASON FOR THE  SEASON' AND AS MARRIED COUPLES OFTEN DO....THEY COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER.... ON  THE FOCUS OF THE FARM.... "WE'VE ALWAYS SAID 'WE DON'T SELL CHRISTMAS TREES. WE SELL THE  EXPERIENCE.""WE SAY WE DON'T SELL CHRISTMAS TREES, WE SELL THE EXPERIENCE, THE  MEMORIES, THE FAMILY TIME TOGETHER.""KIDS NOWADAYS DON'T HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO GRANDPA'S FARM  BECAUSE GRANDPA DOESN'T HAVE THAT FARM ANYMORE. WE TRY TO BE THAT  PERSON."THE NATIONAL CHRISTMAS TREE ASSOCIATION - WHICH TOM DULL IS PRESIDENT - SAYS 25-TO-30 MILLION REAL CHRISTMAS TREES ARE SOLD IN THE U.S. EVERY  YEAR. RIGHT NOW THERE ARE CLOSE TO 350 MILLION CHRISTMAS TREES  GROWING ON TREE FARMS IN THE U-S. TOM SAYS DEMAND IS SURPASSING SUPPLY...AND COULD HAVE CREATED  PROBLEMS FOR BIG RETAILERS WHO WAITED TO ORDER THEIR TREES. "WE'VE BEEN IN A SITUATION THE PAST FEW YEARS WHERE THERE HAVE BEEN  MORE TREES AVAILABLE THAN DEMAND FOR THOSE TREES. (4:41:56) BUT THIS  YEAR, WE'VE NOTICED TREES SOLD OUT EARLY, SO THE DEMAND IS NOW  EXCEEDING SUPPLY. 4:42:09 SO WE'RE IN A SITUATION WHERE YOU DIDN'T GET  YOUR TREES EARLY - SPEAKING AS A WHOLESALER...IF YOU WERE BUYING FROM A WHOLESALER AND DIDN'T GET THEM SPOKEN  FOR EARLY, YOU'RE PROBABLY NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO GET THEM NOW, "

DENMARK CHRISTMAS TREES
HERE'S A QUIZ FOR YOU, CLINTON. WHAT'S THE BIGGEST CHRISTMAS TREE  EXPORTER IN EUROPE?IT'S DENMARK. BUT SOME OTHER COMPETITORS ARE TRYING TO GET A CUT OF  THE MARKET. WORKERS AT ARBO-DANIA CHRISTMAS FARM IN LUND-BEE, DENMARK HARVEST A  HALF MILLION CHRISTMAS TREES EACH YEAR. IT'S THE BIGGEST SUPPLIER IN ALL  OF EUROPE. BUT THESE ARE CHALLENGING TIMES. AN ABUNDANCE OF TREES AND  COMPETITION FROM REGIONAL SUPPLIERS ARE MAKING IT A DIFFICULT SEASON. "... SOME PEOPLE ALL OVER EUROPE MAYBE HAVING TOO MUCH MONEY,  SPENDING, BUYING SOME LAND SOMEWHERE AND THINKING IF THEY PLANT  SOME TREES, EIGHT OR TEN YEARS AFTER THEY WILL DEVELOP GOLD OUT OF  THE GROUND. WHICH IS NOT THE FACT, BUT THE TREES ARE STILL COMING AND  THERE ARE A LOT OF THEM."ACCORDING TO THE DANISH CHRISTMAS TREE ASSOCIATION, DENMARK GROWS  11-AND-A HALF MILLION TREES A YEAR.  NINE AND A HALF MILLION ARE EXPORTED. BUT THOSE EXPORTERS FACE CHALLENGES FROM OTHER NATION'S IN THE  EUROPEAN UNION. "... WE SEE SOME INCREASE IN COMPETITION ON MANY OF OUR EXPORT MARKETS, THAT COULD BE FOR  INSTANCE, GERMANY, FRANCE, BUT ALSO UK HAVE AN INCREASING DOMESTIC PRODUCTION OF  CHRISTMAS TREES."EVEN CURRENCY FLUCTUATIONS - PARTIALLY BLAMED ON BRITAIN'S VOTE TO  LEAVE THE EUROPEAN UNION - IS HAVING AN EFFECT ON TRADE. "THIS YEAR WE HAVE EXPERIENCED THAT MANY OF OUR GROWERS SELLING IN  THE UK, THEY HAVE EXPERIENCED THAT THE LOW EXCHANGE RATE FOR THE  STERLING POUND MAKES IT MORE DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE THE SAME PRICE AS  THE U-K MARKET AS THEY HAVE RECEIVED PREVIOUSLY, EVEN LAST YEAR," > BUT EVEN IN A STRESSED ECONOMY, THESE TREE GROWERS SAY PEOPLE IN THE  U-K WILL SPEND A BIT MORE TO GET THE TREES THEY PREFER...AND THOSE ARE  FROM DENMARK.

CROP COMMENTS
PEOPLE OFTEN ASK 'WILL WE HAVE A WHITE CHRISTMAS"? METEOROLOGIST MIKE HOFFMAN CAN TELL US WHERE YOU NEED TO LIVE TO  IMPROVE YOUR ODDS. "CROP COMMENTS IS POWERED BY RESICORE HERBICIDE FOR CORN, FROM  DOW AGROSCIENCES."   CLINTON AND TYNE, AS YOU KNOW WE'VE HAD A VERY SNOWY AND COLD START  TO THE SEASON.  ONE THIRD OF THE NORTHERN U-S  HAS SNOW COVER RIGHT  NOW. BUT IN THOSE DRIERS YEARS, THERE ARE PLACES YOU CAN LIVE OR VISIT TO IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES OF HAVING A SNOW ON THE GROUND CHRISTMAS  MORNING. BASED ON HISTORICAL PROBABILITIES THE MOUNTAIN RANGES OF THE WESTERN  U-S ARE A GOOD BET FOR A WHITE CHRISTMAS. ASPEN, COLORADO - FOR INSTANCE - HAS A 100-PERCENT HISTORICAL  PROBABILITY <ACCORDING TO NOAA.> EAST OF THE ROCKIES, YOU CAN ALMOST ASSURE YOURSELF A WHITE  CHRISTMAS IN THE NORTHERN TIER STATES FROM NORTHERN MINNESOTA TO  NORTHERN MAINE..."I THINK THIS YEAR YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS AND PICK  SOME PLACE ACROSS THE NORTHERN PLAINS, MUCH OF THE MIDWEST OR  NORTHEAST AND ALMOST GUARANTEE YOURSELF OF HAVING ONE INCH OF  SNOW ON THE GROUND ON CHRISTMAS MORNNIG WHICH IS THE OFFICIAL  DEFINITION OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS." BRAD DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE PERCENTAGE OF THE "LOWER 48" STATES  COVERED WITH SNOW ON DECEMBER 25TH OVER THE PAST 15 YEARS.  IN 2009,  63-PERCENT OF THE COUNTRY HAD THE REQUISITE SNOW COVER. THAT'S THE  HIGHEST PERCENTAGE DURING THE TIME PERIOD.  2003 HAD THE LEAST WITH  JUST 21-PERCENT. NOTHING LIKE A LITTLE MATH FOR THE HOLIDAYS! I'M MIKE  HOFFMAN.

TEASE
STILL TO COME - HOW THE PHRASE "PEACE ON EARTH" PLAYED-OUT ON A BATTLE  FIELD IN EUROPE MORE THAN A CENTURY AGO. AND WE VISIT ONE MIDWEST TOWN THAT HAS A SPECIAL CONNECTION TO A JOLLY  OLE' ELF.

CHRISTMAS DAY TRUCE
"PEACE ON EARTH, GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN' - PERHAPS THOSE WORDS ARE NO  MORE RELEVANT THAN DURING TIMES OF WAR. AS AMERICAN COUNTRYSIDE CORRESPONDENT ANDREW MCCREA SHOWS US - THAT MESSAGE OF HOPE PLAYED-OUT NEARLY A CENTURY AGO ON THE FIELD OF BATTLE..... IT WAS A WAR UNLIKE ANYTHING THE WORLD HAD EVER SEEN.   ALONG THE  FRONT LINES, BOTH SIDES DUG INTO TRENCHES, WHERE THE ENEMY WAS FROM  200 YARDS TO AS CLOSE AS 15 YARDS AWAY.  THE CONDITIONS WERE MISERABLE  AT BEST. (IN THE LOWLANDS IT WAS COMPLETELY WET BECAUSE THEY DUG DOWN AND  THE BOTTOMS OF THE TRENCHES WERE COMPLETELY FLOODED.  DORAN CART,  SENIOR CURATOR, NATIONAL WORLD WAR I MUSEUM AND MEMORIAL IN KANSAS  CITY: MOST DID NOT EXPECT THIS TO BE A LONG WAR.  IN FACT, IT WOULD REALLY BE JUST A WEEKS-LONG SKIRMISH IN THEIR MINDS.  THAT WAS THE SAYING THAT  IT WOULD BE OVER BY CHRISTMAS.  BUT OF COURSE IT WASN'T.  AND THE KAISER  WAS EVEN MORE OPTIMISTIC.  HE SAID IT WOULD BE OVER BEFORE THE LEAVES  FALL.  OF COURSE HE DIDN'T SAY WHAT YEAR. BY CHRISTMAS THOUGH,  THOUGHTS OF A QUICK WAR WERE FADING FAST.  BUT IT WAS ON THAT DAY,  CHRISTMAS DAY OF 1914, ALONG THE FRONT LINES IN THOSE TRENCHES THAT  SOMETHING AMAZING BEGAN TO TAKE PLACE.  THE BELGIANS WERE IN THE  TRENCHES AND THE SUPPORT AREAS BEHIND AND THEY BEGAN SINGING  CHRISTMAS CAROLS.  AND THE GERMANS IN KIND THAT WERE ON THE OTHER  SIDE, ANSWERED.  OF COURSE THEY WERE STILL SEPARATED AT THIS TIME BUT  THEY WERE SINGING THE CHRISTMAS CAROLS BACK AND FORTH. THE SINGING  OF CHRISTMAS CAROLS BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES WAS AN EVENT IN ITSELF.  BUT  THEN, ANOTHER ACTION SIGNALED THAT CHRISTMAS DAY, WOULD BE DIFFERENT  FROM THE OTHER DAYS. A COUPLE OF SOLDIERS FROM EACH SIDE ACTUALLY  CAME OUT OF THE TRENCHES.  NOW THEY WERE EITHER INCREDIBLY BRAVE OR  INCREDIBLY STUPID.  NOW IT DID BRING UP THE SOLDIERS FROM THE OTHER  SIDE. SEVERAL OF THE GERMAN SOLDIERS HAD PREVIOUSLY WORKED IN  ENGLAND AND SPOKE THE LANGUAGE.  SOON, MEN FROM BOTH SIDES STOOD  AND CONVERSED.  HISTORY RECORDS THEY TRADED SOME ITEMS AS WELL.  FOR  MOST, IT WAS A WELCOME BREAK FORM THE WAR – FOR OTHERS, SUCH A  MEETING BETWEEN COMBATANTS, EVEN ON CHRISTMAS, WAS SOMETHING THAT  SHOULD NEVER OCCUR.  BUT THE HIGHER ECHELONS WHICH WERE NEVER THIS  CLOSE TO THE FRONT DIDN'T LIKE IT. THE PIECE ALONG THE FRONT LINE THAT  DECEMBER 25 WAS SPORADIC AND SHORT LIVED. YET IT WAS A TIME FOR  SOLDIERS TO PERHAPS REMEMBER HOME. REMEMBER THEIR FAMILIES AND  CHRISTMAS ITS SELF. A REST BIT FROM A WAR THAT ENGULFED THE WORLD.  TRAVELING THE COUNTRYSIDE IN KANSAS CITY MISSOURI, I'M ANDREW MCCREA. THANKS ANDREW.

TEASE
WHEN WE COME BACK WE'LL MEET SOME OF SANTA'S HELPERS LIVING A BIT  SOUTH OF THE NORTH POLE. WE'LL MEET SOME TENNESSEE 4-HERS SETTING AN EXAMPLE IN THE SEASON OF  GIVING

SANTA CLAUS, INDIANA
NORTH POLE ALASKA IS 38-HUNDRED MILES AND ABOUT A 12 HOUR FLIGHT AWAY  FROM A SMALL TOWN IN SOUTHERN INDIANA WITH A LOT OF HOLIDAY FLAIR. AND  DESPITE THE DISTANCE, THEY SHARE A COMMON BOND...SANTA CLAUS!. AS BETSY JIBBEN SHOWS US, THE SPIRIT OF GIVING IN THIS RURAL MIDWEST  TOWN REACHES THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN AROUND THE GLOBE. TUCKED AWAY IN SOUTHERN INDIANA,  YOU'LL FIND THE RURAL TOWN OF SANTA CLAUS... WHERE THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS LIVES ON EVERY CORNER.. SHOP AND  BUSINESS..  "OUR PACKAGE VOLUME INCREASES IMMENSELY. WE HAVE PACKAGES ALL OVER THE PLACE TODAY!!"INCLUDING THE POST OFFICE.. WHERE PASSIONATE POST CARD CREATORS MAKE  THE TREK FROM ACROSS THE NATION TO SEAL T HEIR SEASONS GREETINGS  FROM AMERICA'S CHRISTMAS TOWN.  BUT THIS LITTLE POST OFFICE HAS A MUCH MUCH BIGGER RESPONSIBILITY.IT'S WHERE MORE THAN 20-THOUSAND LETTERS ARRIVE ADDRESSED TO THE  MAN IN THE BIG RED SUIT."SOME OF THEM DON'T EVEN HAVE A STAMP,"THOSE LETTERS ARE PICKED UP BY ELVES FROM THE NORTH POLE.  OPENED, READ AND RESPONDED TO WITH A HANDWRITTEN NOTE TO CHILDREN  ALL AROUND THE WORLD.  "SANTA CAN'T ANSWER ALL OF THE LETTERS. HE'S VERY BUSY GETTING THE SLEIGH READY AND THE TOYS  READY SO HE HAS TO HAVE HELP,"THESE SOUTHERN ELVES HAVE RESPONDED TO KRINGLE'S KIDS FOR MORE THAN  A CENTURY.SANTA CLAUS, INDIANA GOT ITS FIRST MASSIVE AMOUNT OF LETTERS IN THE  EARLY 1900S. CONCERNED NO ONE WAS RESPONDING, SOME HELPING HANDS  PITCHED IN.  NOW THE 'CHIEF ELF' PAT KOCH IS CONTINUING THE TRADITION, PENNING  RESPONSES TO KIDS REQUESTS FOR OVER 70  YEARS.  "THE FUNNIEST? I THINK IT WAS SENT IN 2007. IT SAID, 'DEAR SANTA, PLEASE MAKE MY DAD SMARTER.'  WHILE ALL UNIQUE.. SOME LETTERS ARE HEARTFELT...  "THANK YOU FOR WORKING SO HARD YEAR ROUND. CAN YOU PLEASE PRAY FOR MY SISTER WHOM WE  HAVEN'T MET YET WHO IS FROM CHINA? WE HOPE TO ADOPT. THAT'S A SWEET ONE WE RECEIVED  TODAY,""THIS YEAR I'M GIVING TO THE POOR. I'M NOT LYING. SINCERELY, KELTON."OTHERS ARE QUITE HUMOROUS. "DEAR SANTA. DID YOU FORGET YOUR SHOES? THEY'RE AT MY HOUSE."AND MANY REMIND SANTA "DON'T FORGET TO STOP." "WOW, HE WROTE THIS ON THE FOURTH OF JULY. HAPPY FOURTH!""DEAR SANTA. FOR CHRISTMAS I WANT A TUXEDO. YOU ARE THE BEST."LETTERS COME FROM AROUND THE GLOBE..  "MY NIECE NATALIE WOULD LOVE A HORSE FOR CHRISTMAS HOWEVER SHE LIVES IN AN APARTMENT IN  SLOVOKIA. SHE'LL SETTLE FOR BOOKS."I JUST OPENED ONE FROM TAIWAN,"AND AS THEY READ AND RESPOND THESE HELPFUL HANDS COME WITH STORIES  OF THEIR OWN...WHILE OTHERS LOOK LIKE THEY WERE BORN FOR THE JOB.  "I'VE ALWAYS LOVED CHRISTMAS. I'VE ALWAYS LOVED THE MEANING BEHIND CHRISTMAS," EACH LETTER WRITTEN WITH LOVE AND READ WITH A SOFT HEART.  "IT GETS HARD WHEN THERE ARE LETTERS FROM CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WHO DON'T HAVE A LOT OR HAVE  GONE THROUGH TERRIBLE TIMES. THEY'RE REACHING OUT. THEY NEED HELP OR HOPE AND IT MAKES YOU  APPRECIATE WHAT YOU DO HAVE AND HOW LUCKY WE ARE IN MANY WAYS,"ALL LITTLE MOMENTS, WHIMSICAL WORDS, KINDNESS SHARED IN TEH SPIRIT OF  THE SEASON..AS ANOTHER CHRISTMAS PROVES WE'RE ALL IN NEED OF A LITTLE FAITH.  REPORTING IN SANTA CLAUS, INDIANA, I'M BETSY JIBBEN. BY THE WAY, INDIANA ISN'T THE ONLY STATE WHICH CAN CLAIM A COMMUNITY OF  SANTA CLAUS. THERE'S ALSO SANTA CLAUS GEORGIA, NEAR THE CITY OF VIDALIA. AND SANTA CLAUS, ARIZONA - AN UNINHABITED DESERT TOWN IN MOJAVE  COUNTY.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
FOR A DECADE NOW, TENNESSEE 4-H HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN THE  INTERNATIONAL EFFORT KNOWN AS 'OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD.' YOUNG TENNESSEANS HAVE COLLECTED THOUSANDS OF ITEMS FOR  KIDS OVERSEAS. AND AS CHARLES DENNEY TELLS US, THAT WORK GOES-ON EVEN DURING THE  HEAT OF A TENNESSEE SUMMER. A BLAZING AUGUST MORNING ON THE UT AG CAMPUS, BUT THEY'RE ALREADY THINKING CHRISTMAS AT  THE STATE 4-H OFFICE IN MORGAN HALL.    THAT'S WHERE YOU CAN BUY WHAT EVERYONE WANTS ON A  HOT DAY – A CUP OF COFFEE. TOSS IN A DONUT OR TWO AS WELL. BUT IT'S NOT THE MENU THAT'S  IMPORTANT HERE, BUT WHERE THE PROCEEDS ARE GOING. IT'S TO BENEFIT OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD. "OUR OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SERVICE PROJECT IS DEFINITELY A YEAR 'ROUND EXPERIENCE. IT  TAKES US LITERALLY ALL YEAR TO COLLECT ALL THE ITEMS WE NEED TO PACK OUR BOXES...." FAST FORWARD A FEW MONTHS, AND THESE COLLEGIATE 4-HERS AT UT'S INSTITUTE OF AGRICULTURE ARE  BUSY PUTTING TOGETHER THE ITEMS COLLECTED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. HERE NEEDY CHILDREN OVERSEAS  RECEIVE SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND TOILETRIES AS WELL AS TOYS, ALL BOXED AND SHIPPED.  "....AND SO IT'S REACHING BEYOND OUR COUNTY AND OUR STATE, BUT REACHING CHILDREN ALL ACROSS THE  WORLD, AND IT'S JUST A REALLY INTERESTING WAY FOR US TO GIVE BACK." "THIS IS THE 10TH YEAR TENNESSEE 4-H HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN OPERATION CHRISTMAS  CHILD, AND THE YEAR 'ROUND COLLECTING HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE 2013. THE IMPACT HAS BEEN  ENORMOUS. IN THAT TIME, TENNESSEE 4-H HAS COLLECTED 10,000 BOXES, WITH MORE TO COME THIS  HOLIDAY SEASON.  BUT TO FILL THAT MANY ORDERS, IT ALL STARTS WITH DONATIONS. TENNESSEE 4-H COLLECTS ITEMS THAT ARE  SEASONAL – A DIFFERENT GIFT FOR CHILDREN EACH MONTH. AND THEN BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS, THERE ARE  MASSIVE PACKING PARTIES STATEWIDE. ALL THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AFTER EVERY MAJOR HOLIDAY, WE'LL GO AND CHECK OUT THE  SALES AT WALMART AND SEE ARE THINGS 70% OFF YET?" IT'S OFTEN SAID WE SHOULD KEEP THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT WITH US YEAR 'ROUND. HERE 4-H IS DOING JUST  THAT. AFTER ALL, IT'S NOT ABOUT MAKING A CHILD'S HOLIDAY BETTER, BUT MAKING THEIR LIFE BETTER – AND  THAT'S A 12 MONTH A YEAR JOB. THIS IS CHARLES DENNEY REPORTING.  A NOBLE CAUSE AND SOME IMPRESSIVE KIDS. THANKS CHARLES.

TEASE
AND WHEN WE COME BACK OUR OWN JOHN PHIPPS TELLS US HOW KIDS JUST  MIGHT BE THE PATHWAY TO YOUR BEST CHRISTMAS EVER.

JOHN PHIPPS
FARM JOURNAL COMMENTATOR AND ILLINOIS FARMER JOHN PHIPPS JOINS US  FROM HIS HOME TO SHARE WHAT MAY BE SOME OF HIS FONDEST MEMORIES. THE OLDER YOU GET THE MORE CHRISTMAS STUFF YOU ACCUMULATE. MANY OF YOU MAY RECALL THE  ALL THE DECORATIONS I SHOWED LAST YEAR THAT NOW FILL ABOUT EVERY CORNER OF OUR HOUSE, AND TAKE  CONSIDERABLE TIME TO INSTALL AND REMOVE. PART OF THE REASON IT IS SO TIME CONSUMING IS THE  AMOUNT OF TIME SPENT RELIVING THE MEMORIES THESE TREASURES TRIGGER. PERHAPS MORE SO THAN  ANY OTHER FAMILY ACTIVITY, CHRISTMAS IS A TIME FOR REMEMBERING AND NOSTALGIA.  CHRISTMASES PAST OCCUPY A SPECIAL PLACE IN OUR HEARTS, AND THERE CAN OFTEN BE A BITTERSWEET  COMPARISON TO THIS YEAR'S VERSION. THE HOLIDAY SEASONS WE REMEMBER FROM OUR CHILDHOOD  CAN BE ESPECIALLY FOND RECOLLECTIONS. PARTLY THIS IS DUE TO HOW OUR BRAINS PROCESS MEMORIES,  EDITING THEM EACH TIME WE RELIVE A PAST EVENT. GOOD TIMES BECOME EVEN BETTER, AND DIFFICULT  TIMES ARE REVISED TO EASE ANY PAIN THEY MIGHT RECALL. THE FINAL PRODUCT IS AN ABIDING SENSE OF  QUIET LOSS, AS THE GOOD TIMES SEEM ALWAYS TO BE BEHIND US. THERE IS ONE SURE CURE FOR THIS MELANCHOLY, I WOULD SUGGEST. IF YOU ARE ABLE TO HAVE CHILDREN  INVOLVED IN YOUR CHRISTMAS SEASON, YOU CAN GAIN A WIDER PERSPECTIVE. AFTER ALL, THEY WILL  DOUBTLESS RECALL THIS CHRISTMAS JUST AS WISTFULLY AS WE DO CHRISTMASES OF OUR CHILDHOOD. WE  CAN BE PART OF CONSTRUCTING THE MEMORIES THAT WILL FEED THEIR NOSTALGIA DECADES FROM NOW.  WHILE IT IS DIFFICULT TO PICTURE CONTEMPORARY EVENTS AS BEING "THE GOOD OLD DAYS" IN THE  MAKING, THEY ACTUALLY ARE. BEING INVOLVED IN THAT PROCESS HAS LED ME TO REALIZE THAT DESPITE WHAT MY MEMORY TRIES TO  TELL ME, IN MANY WAYS, MY BEST CHRISTMAS EVER IS MOST LIKELY THIS ONE.  THANKS JOHN.  BEAUTIFULLY SAID. AND I KNOW MY TWO LITTLE ONES WILL BE  WIDE EYED AND BUSHY TAILED CHRISTMAS MORNING. AS WILL MY 3--YOU CAN BET THE ENTHUSIASM WILL BE PALPABLE. I JUST HOPE  THERE'S ENOUGH COFFEE.

CLOSE
AND THAT'S ALL THE TIME WE HAVE.  WE'RE SO GLAD YOU SPENT PART OF YOUR  DAY WITH US.FROM OUR FAMILIES TO YOURS - MERRY CHRISTMAS. AND MAY 2017 BRING YOU  GOOD HEALTH AND GOOD CHEER....ON THE FARM. HIGH STRENGTH STEEL FOR HIGH STRENGTH DEPENDABILITY, THE CHEVY  SILVERADO IS THE OFFICIAL NEWS GATHERING VEHICLE OF AGDAY TELEVISION.
