WASHINGTON CONFIRMATION HEARINGS
NOW TO  WASHINGTON WHERE THE CONFIRMATION PROCESS FOR TWO KEY  MEMBERS OF THE TRUMP EXECUTIVE TEAM AWAIT SENATE CONFIRMATION  HEARINGS. AND THOSE DELAYS ARE DIRECTLY TIED TO AGRICULTURE AND  TRADE. A HEARING DATE FOR ROBERT LIGHT-HI-ZER - THE PRESIDENT'S CHOICE FOR U-S  TRADE REPRESENTATIVE - HAS NOT BEEN SET BY THE SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEE. LIKEWISE, AN EXACT DATE FOR SONNY PERDUE'S HEARING AS HEAD OF USDA  HAS NOT BEEN SET. BUT IT APPEARS IT WILL OCCUR IN MARCH. AG. LEADERS ARE WANTING AG. SECRETARY SONNY PERDUE TO BECOME  CONFIRMED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.' HOPING HE WILL PUSH THE TRADE AGENDA  ALONG. ACCORDING TO POLITICO.  THE COMMITTEE IS STILL WAITING TO RECEIVE RESULTS OF PERDUE'S FBI  GACKGROUND CHECK. LEADERS OF AG. ORGANIZIATIONS SAY THEY'RE IN LIMBO. "I THINK WE'RE GOING TO BE VERY ENCORUAGED THAT WE NOW HAVE A  SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE THAT WILL BE SOON APPROVED. WE HOPE THERE  WILL BE SOMEONE AT USTR THAT WILL BE APPROVED SOON BECAUSE THEY WE  WILL HAVE SOMEONE WE CAN TALK TO- RIGHT NOW, IT'S VERY DIFFICULT FOR AG.  BECUASE WE HAVEN'T HAD ANYONE THERE WE CAN TALK TO - SO THE FACT THAT  WE'RE GETTING A TEAM IN PLACE- THAT'S GOING TO BE ENCOURAGING THAT THE  WISER MINDS IN A TRADE ARENA WILL BE ABLE TO COME FORWARD AND EXPLAIN  THE BENEFITS ACCRUING IN THE INDUSTRY AND HOW MUCH AND VALUED OUR  LEADERSHIP IS 49."MEANWHILE THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT ON WEDNESDAY VOTED IN FAVOR OF A  TRADE DEAL BETWEEN THE EUROPEAN UNION AND CANADA.  TRADE BETWEEN  THE TWO ACCOUNTS FOR MORE THAN 63 BILLION DOLLARS. THE E-U EXPECTS  THE SO-CALLED 'CETA' <SEE-TUH> DEAL TO BOOST THIS BY 20 PERCENT BY  REMOVING ALMOST ALL TARIFFS. CANADA'S PARLIAMENT IS EXPECTED TO VOTE ON THE DEAL IN THE COMING  MONTHS.

CRAIG VANDYKE TOP THIRD AG MARKETING OUR GUEST HERE TODAY CRAIG ONE THING I WANT TO TALK TO  YOU ABOUT THIS ISN'T REALLY HAVE TO DO WITH MARKETS IN GENERAL BUT INFORMATION AND THE FLOW OF  INFORMATION AND HOW THAT 'S CHANGED AND I KNOW ONE THING THAT YOU USE A LOT FOR JUST KIND OF  AS IT'S HAPPENING INFO IS TWITTER AND SOCIAL MEDIA TALK ABOUT HOW THAT CHANGED WHAT YOU DO  WELL LOOK AT HOW INFORMATION EXCHANGE HAS CHANGED THE PAST TEN FIFTEEN YEARS. I MEAN YOU  KNOW IT USED TO TAKE TIME TO GET INFORMATION YOU COULDN'T TEXT. YOU KNOW MOW ALL THE SUDDEN  YOU CAN GET INFORMATION WITHIN A SECOND AND LOOK AT THE MARKETS WE HAVE TODAY RIGHT THEY  TRADE FASTER THAN THAT SO THE FLOW OF INFORMATION NOW IS IS YOU KNOW WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT  EXCHANGES PLATFORMS LIKE TWITTER TO ME THERE 'S A LOT OF VALUE THERE THERE 'S A LOT OF VALUE AND  EXPAND WHAT YOU MEAN LIKE HOW CAN I FIND VALUE THERE. THE VALUE NEEDS TO BE CIPHERED FOR  SURE BUT THERE'S THERE 'S A LOT OF NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES THERE THERE 'S A LOT OF GOOD FOLKS  GROUPS PEOPLE THAT FOLLOW THAT PUT OUT A CONSISTENT TRUSTWORTHY INFORMATION AND ESPECIALLY IN  A DAY IN AGE WHERE ANYBODY CAN PUT ANYTHING OUT THERE THAT COULD YOU KNOW COULD MEAN  ANYTHING AS FAR AS IN REGARDS THE MARKET AND SOMETIMES THEY'RE PROBABLY AS SOME OF THAT  GOING AROUND. I THINK YOU PROBABLY DON'T FIND IT AS MUCH IN IN OUR INDUSTRY. SURE AS SOMEONES  CALL THE OUT OF WRONG ANYWAY SO THAT'S TRUE BUT THERE 'S A LOT OF VALUE THEREIN IN THE SAME  TOKEN YOU KNOW SOMETIMES MARKETS CAN DRIVE YOU CRAZY. SOMETIMES MARKETS CAN GET A LITTLE  BORING SO I THINK THERE 'S ALSO A LOT OF VALUE THERE AND JUST KEEPING KEEPING YOUR YOUR  ATTENTION FOCUSED ON THE MARKET. YEAH BEING ENGAUGED AND HAVING IN THIS CONSTANT  CONVERSATION WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS FLOW OF INFORMATION YOU KNOW AND IT CAN BE FUN. I MEAN  THAT'S YOU KNOW IT ISN'T ALL JUST HAVE TO BE NUMBERS NUMBERS NUMBERS. THERE ARE SOME FUN  EXCHANGES RIGHT RIGHT IN AND IN IN MY OPINION I YOU KNOW I ENJOY THAT AND I THINK ENCOURAGES  CONVERSATION AND THE SAME TOKEN IT HELPS ME CHALLENGE MY OWN IDEAS NOT TO ME CHALLENGE  MY OWN THOUGHT PROCESS ON MAYBE WHAT I THINK THE MARKETS TO WONDER WHAT I THINK YOU KNOW  PART OF THE INDUSTRY IS HEADED AND HOW WILL THAT AFFECT WHAT I DO IN AND WHAT MAY BE A  PRODUCER OR HER OR ANYONE ELSE ABOUT THE INDUSTRY WHAT THEY'LL DO AND THE NETWORKING  BENEFITS AS WELL. THAT 'S A PHENOMENAL OPPORTUNITY FOR FOLKS TO TOO MAYBE INHANCE. THEIR  OPERATION. NOW MAYBE NOT A HUGE WAY BUT WHERE TO GET MORE INVOLVED NOW AND A WAY TO  FIND OUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE WERE THINKING AND WHAT THEY'RE DOING ON THEIR FARM THIS TIME AND  TIME A DAY AIR TIME A YEAR AND BOY IT SURE MOVES AWFUL FAST AND IT'S FUN APPRECIATE IT CRAIG WE'LL BE BACK WITH MORE AGDAY IN JUST A MINUTE FOR A SPECIAL REPORT ON THE GRAIN MARKETS CALL TOLL FREE AT 877- TTHEDGE. SO, THIS THIS COULD CAUSE MUDSLIDES AND  PROBLEMS OUT THERE IT WILL CONTINUE TO ERODE THE DROUGHT OBVIOUSLY AS WELL. AS FOR SNOW FALL  GOES MOST OF IT SPENT IN NEW ENGLAND OVER THE PAST TWENTY FOUR HOURS  ADDING IN THE NEXT THIRTY SIX A LITTLE BIT MORE OUT THERE BUT WE'RE GONNA SEE SOME HEAVY  AMOUNTS AGAIN HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE WESTERN ROCKIES. HIGH JUMP THURSDAY INTO THE SIXTIES  FOR THE PLAINS STATES. TEENS AND TWENTIES FOR THE AND NORTHERN PORTIONS OF THE GREAT LAKES INTO THE NORTHEAST  STILL CHILLY ONE MORE NIGHT FOR THE NORTH EASTERN PORTIONS OF THE COUNTRY. MILD CONDITIONS IN THE  MIDDLE. BUT NO MORE ARCTIC AIR COMING ANYTIME  SOON. THAT 'S A LOOK ACROSS THE COUNTRY, NOW LET 'S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME LOCAL FORECASTS.  FIRST OF ALL, LIMON, COLORADO, PLENTY OF SUNSHINE AND WARM TODAY HIGH JUMP OF SIXTY EIGHT  DEGREES. DROVERS TV
CATTLE PRODUCERS ARE CONTINUING TO SEE CLIMBING PROFITS.  THE STERLING PROFIT TRACKER SAYS CATTLE FEEDING MARGINS INCREASED 15  DOLLARS PER HEAD THE WEEK ENDING FEBRUARY 10- AT ROUGHLY A 245 DOLLAR PER HEAD LEVEL. THAT'S A HUGE IMPROVEMENT- OVER 420 DOLLARS BETTER THAN LAST YEAR  WHEN PROFITS WERE IN THE RED. THIS IS THE 12TH CONSECUTIVE WEEK OF FEEDYARD PROFITS.  THE MOST RAPID BEEF HERD EXPANSION SINCE THE 1990S.  STERLING MARKETING PRESIDENT JOHN NALIVKA SAYS USDA CATTLE INVENTORY  REPORT NUMBERS - WHICH IS SHOWING AN OVERALL GROWING CATTLE, AND  BEEF HERD- HAS BEEN QUICK.  USDA'S DATA SUGGEST A 14% INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF HEIFERS RETAINED  IN 2014 AND BRED IN 2015, THE LARGEST NUMBER SINCE 1991. "IN 2014 THE U.S. BEEF COW HERD STOOD AT 60-YEAR LOWS, BUT PRODUCERS HAVE ADDED 6%  TO THE COW HERD SINCE THEN. WHILE THE INVENTORY REPORT SUGGESTS MORE CATTLE COMING TO MARKET THIS YEAR, ANOTHER KEY  FACTOR TO INCREASING BEEF PRODUCTION IS POUNDS OF BEEF PER COW. OVERALL INCREASES IN  PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY ARE EVIDENT WHEN YOU CONSIDER WE PRODUCED AS MUCH BEEF LAST YEAR AS  WE DID IN 1975 WITH 43 MILLION FEWER CATTLE."HENDERSON SAYS THAT WAS POSSIBLE BECAUSE PRODUCTION INCREASED  FROM 416 POUNDS PER COW IN 1975 TO 614 POUNDS IN 2015.  - A 48 PERCENT  INCREASE IN FOUR DECADES.  SOUTH KOREA IS PLANNING ON IMPORTING 4-POINT-8 MILLION DOSES OF FOOT  AND MOUTH VACCINES BY THE END OF THE MONTH TO PREVENT A WIDER  SPREAD OF THE VIRUS.  OVER A HANDFUL OF CASES (WRITEUP SAYS 6) HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED SINCE  BEGINNING OF FEBRUARY- PUTTING THE COUNTRY ON HIGH ALERT.  IT'S A DISEASE THE  U.S. IS WATCHING AS WELL SINCE WE'RE IMPORTING A SMALL  AMOUNT OF FRESH AND FROZEN PRODUCT FROM BRAZIL- WHICH HAS  EXPERIENCED THE VIRUS IN THE PAST.  "WE STILL HAVE SOME CONCERNS OVER FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE, THE VIRUS  THAT CAUSES FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE CAN TRAVEL ON FRESH AND FROZEN  PRODUCT. AND UNFORTUNATELY, OUR GOVERNMENT RIGHT NOW DOES NOT HAVE AN ADEQUATE VACCINE SUPPLY IN ORDER TO PROTECT US. SO, WE'RE  WORKING WITH THE SENATE AG. COMMITTEE AND WITH USDA TO FIGURE OUT  HOW TO FIX THAT SITUATION." SOUTH KOREA IS ALSO DEALING WITH A BIRD FLU EPIDEMIC- CULLING OVER 33  MILLION BIRDS.

IN THE COUNTRY
IN THE COUNTRY - SPONSORED BY KUBOTA.  DISCOVER THE POWER BEHIND THE M6 SERIES AT  KUBOTA.COM. EVERY YEAR, A DAIRY OPERATION IS GIVEN THE INNOVATIVE DAIRY FARMER OF THE YEAR AWARD, HONORING FARMS WHICH UTILIZE IMPROVED  EFFICIENCY,TECHNOLOGY AND MARKETING.  IT'S AN AWARD CO-SPONSORED BY THE INTERNATIONAL DAIRY FOODS  ASSOCIATION AND DAIRY HERD MANAGEMENT.  AND AS THE 2017 WINNER  JER-LINDY FARMS AND REDHEAD CREAMERY IN  BROOTEN, MINNESOTA SHOWS US, A BOLD IDEA CAN BLOSSOM INTO A BOOMING  BUSINESS.  AS ALISE SJOSTROM WASHES ANOTHER TRAY OF CHEESE, HER 'READHEAD  CREAMERY' SHIRT BRANDS EVERY MOVE.  THIS BLOSSOMING BUSINESS A PASSION SINCE SHE WAS 17- AND BEGGING HER  PARENTS TO BUILD A CREAMERY ON THEIR DAIRY.  "I LITERALLY CAME HOME AND DECLARED THAT WE WERE GOING TO MAKE CHEESE. (LAUGHS)  I'VE DEDICATED MY LIFE TO IT EVER SINCE,"THAT WAS BACK IN 2002.  SINCE THEN, THE GIRL WITH A VISION AS VIBRANT AS THAT SIGNATURE RED  HAIR... I SAID, "I'M DOING IT."RESEARCHED, PENCILED A PLAN AND MADE A PROMISE TO MAKE 'REDHEAD  CREAMERY' A REALITY.  CONSTRUCTION STARTED IN 2013, AND IN 2014, ALISE MADE HER FIRST BATCH OF  CHEESE."IT'S KIND OF PAYING HOMEAGE TO ME AND MY SISTERS. AND HAVING RED HAIR. WE'RE  TAKING ADVANTAGE OF IT FOR ONCE." (LAUGHS) ALISE ISN'T THE ONLY ONE WITH BIG DREAMS. THE INITIAL DAIRY OPERATION, JER-LINDY FARMS, STARTED WITH HER PARENTS  JERRY AND LINDA JENNISSEN, BOTH THIRD GENERATION DAIRY FARMERS.  BACK IN 1979, AFTER JERRY COMPLETED SCHOOL, HIS DAD GAVE HIM A RIDE TO  GET A LOAN  FOR HIS OWN OPERATION. "I FILLED OUT THE PAPERWORK AND QUALIFIED FOR A BEGINNING FARMER LOAN,"HE QUALIFIED FOR 32 REGISTERED HOLSTEINS AND MILKED IN A RENTED BARN. A  FEW YEARS LATER, HIS LANDLORD SAID HE NEEDED THE BARN BACK. SO, THEY STARTED LOOKING.... AND FOUND THIS 40-ACRE FARMSTEAD WITH A HOUSE AND BARN BUT NO  RUNNING WATER."WE BULIT ONTO THE OLD BARN, BUILT OUT THE FRONT AN CONVERETED IT TO A 50 COW STYLE BARN, ADDED RUNNING WATER TO THE HOUSE, KITCHEN AND BATHROOM,"CONSTRUCTION WAS EASY. THE BIGGEST HURDLE CAME DURING THE 1980S FARM CRISIS. "WE BOTH GOT OFF FARM JOBS. WE GOT OFF THE FARM FOR 10 YEARS AND YOU DID ALSO ,"IN 2002, THEY WERE FINANCIALLY STABLE ENOUGH TO EXPAND.  TODAY, THEY MILK ROUGHLY 200 COWS IN A DOUBLE-EIGHT HERRINGBONE  PARLOR AND FARM 240 ACRES OF LAND.  AND AS THEY EXPANDED, INNOVATION HAS FOLLOWED.  THEY BUILT BUFFER S TRIPS IN THE EARLY 200S, AHEAD OF HTE ENVIRONMENTAL  CURVE. THEY STOPPED USING COMMERCIAL FERTILIZER -OTHER THAN LIME- ALL  NUTRIENTS NOW COME FROM THE DAIRY.  THEY'VE ADDED DLED LIGHTING WITH WORKED OUT A PEAK POWER PLAN TOT  REDUCE ELECTRICITY COSTS.  BUT NOT EVERY PROJECT RAN SMOOTHLY.  IN 2007, THEY WERE APPROACHED TO INSTALL A METHANE DIGESTER ON THEIR  OPERATION THROUGH AN INITIATIVE FOR SMALLER DAIRIES BUT IT JUST DIDNT'  WORK. AND YEARS LATER, THEY TURNED IT OFF.  "THE AMOUNT OF RESOURCES IT WILL TAKE TO DO IT WAS NOT FESIBLE. CERTAINLY NOT AT OUR LEVEL,"NOW, ALISE IS MAKING 800 TO AH THOUSAND POUNDS OF CHEESE TWO DAYS  EACH WEEK - USING 7 TO 8 PERCENT OF JER-LINDY'S MILK VOLUME. THE FALL FULL FAT CHEESE, TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE HOLSTEIN'S HIGH SOLIDS  MILK, WHICH AVERAGES 4.2 PERCENT BUTTERFAT AND 3.2 PERCENT PROTEIN.  IT'S THOSE BOLD IDEAS - LEARNING BY DOING  THAT SHAPES JER-LINDY FARMS AND REDHEAD CREAMERY...  "JERRY AND LINDA, WHAT THEY WENT THROUGH, ESPEICALLY WITH THE DIGESTER TO TRY NEW THINGS AT  THE CHEESE PLANT AFTER TRYING TO BE INNOVATIVE AND IN SOME WAYS SUCCEDDING AND SHUTTING  DOWN PROJECTS, I'M PROUD OF HTE REST OF HTE FAMILY WHO ARE CONTINUING ON AND TRYING SOMEHING NEW,""IN TERMS OF BEING INNOVATIVE, IT'S HARD FOR ME TO ANSWER CAUSE I FEEL LIKE I'M JUST DOING WHAT  I'M DOING AND WANTING TO BE BETTER AT IT EVERYDAY,"AND A REASON ALISE HOPES MORE OF THE FAMILY'S BIG IDEAS BECOME A REALITY. LUCAS IS THE FORMER ASSISTANT EDITOR OF DAIRY HERD MANAGEMENT, A FARM  JOURNAL PUBLICATION.
