MAY 30, 2016

OPENING HEADLINES:
COMING UP ON A SPECIAL EDITION OF AGDAY WE REMEMBER THE HERO'S OF WORLD WAR TWO. FROM CELEBRATING THE GREATEST GENERATION, TO REMEMBERING THOSE WHO HELPED WIN THE WAR. PLUS, THE POWER OF FORGIVENESS--A FIRIST-HAND ACCOUNT FROM A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR LIVING IN INDIANA. WHAT I DISCOVERED FOR MYSELF WAS LIFE CHANGING, WAS I HAD THE POWER TO FORGIVE> HER STORY IS ONE YOU'LL NEVER FORGET. AND THE FOOD THAT FUELED THE TRIUMPH.
COMMEMORATION TO WWII VETS:
GOOD MORNING, I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. TODAY WE'RE TAKING A LOOK BACK IN TIME TO HONOR THOSE IN WHAT'S NOW KNOWN AS THE "GREATEST GENERATION".  FROM FARM-COUNTRY TO CITY, THE MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN OF THIS COUNTRY FACED THE UPHEAVAL OF WORLD WAR TWO. IT'S NOW BEEN 71 YEARS SINCE THE ALLIED VICTORY. MANY OF THE FACES AND STORIES OF THAT GENERATION ARE QUICKLY DISAPPEARING. ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL WORLD WAR TWO MUSEUM, VETERANS FROM THAT WAR ARE DYING AT A RATE OF 430 A DAY. OF COURSE, MANY DIDN'T MAKE IT HOME. MORE THAN 400-THOUSAND AMERICANS DIED ON THE BATTLE FIELD, IN THE AIR AND ON THE SEA. ONE OF THOSE -A SAILOR WHO DIED IN THE PEARL HARBOR ATTACK IN DECEMBER 1941 -HAS FINALLY BEEN LAID TO REST BACK HOME IN SOUTHEAST KANSAS. AN HONOR GUARD WAS PRESENT AS THE REMAINS OF SEAMAN SECOND CLASS DALE PEARCE WERE RETURNED. PEARCE SERVED ON THE U-S-S OKLAHOMA WHEN THE JAPANESE ATTACKED. HIS BODY WAS RECOVERED A YEAR LATER AND PLACED AT THE NATIONAL MEMORIAL CEMETERY IN HAWAII WITH OTHER "UNKNOWN" SAILORS. BUT THROUGH D-N-A TESTING, HE WAS IDENTIFED. HE WAS BURIED IN PARSONS KANSAS JUST THIS WEEK.
PATRIOTS REMEMBERED:
STEVE GRANT FROM AGDAY AFFILIATE K-Y-TV SHARES THE STORY OF SOME OF THOSE PATRIOTS. READY, NOAH, YEA, I'M READY. I'VE WANTED TO COME OUT FOR A LONG TIME NOAH ADAMS SERVED IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC. HE SAW COMBAT IN GUAM, THE PHILIPPINES. AND HE CAME TO ARLINGTON WITH MEMBERS OF THE WAR LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY. MOST OF MY BUDDIES GOT KILLED. I STILL SEE THEM. IT JUST GETS YA. BECAUSE SOMETIMES TIME DOES NOT HEAL. HE INTENDED TO HELP THE WOUNDED BUT WAS HANDED A RIFLE AND SENT INTO BATTLE. I TOOK MY BASIC TRAINING AS A MEDIC. AND GOT TO NEW CALEDONIA, THEY TRANSFERRED US TO THE INFANTRY. GAVE US 6 WEEKS BUT I KNEW HOW TO HANDLE A GUN. I KNEW HOW TO HUNT. SO I SURVIVED IT. LIKE THE SILENCE OF THE GUARDS WHO WATCHED KNOW ADAM'S PARENTS OR BROTHERS NEVER SPOKE OF HIS OWN BRUSH WITH DEATH OR DUTY. HE JUST CAME HOME AND STARTED OVER. WE WOULDN'T BE HERE IF WE HADN'T WON THAT WAR. BUT HIS PATRIOTISM HAS REMAINED INTACT AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. I'M PROUD OF THIS COUNTRY. I SALUTE MY FLAG EVERYDAY.
TEASE:
WHEN WE COME BACK....WE VISIT A MUSEUM THAT TELLS OF THE GALLANTRY AND LEADERSHP OF THE WAR IN THE PACIFIC.

GALLERY DEDICATED TO WWII CAMPAIGN IN THE PACIFIC:
IN THE FALL OF 2015, THE NATIONAL WORLD WAR TWO MUSEUM IN NEW ORLEANS OFFICIALLY OPENED ITS NEWEST GALLERY -"THE ROAD TO TOKYO". THE TEN GALLERIES ARE DEDICATED SPECIFICALLY TO THE CAMPAIGN IN THE PACIFIC. THE MUSEUM RETRACES THE TRAIL THAT LED FROM PEARL HARBOR TO TOKYO BAY -BY WAY OF COUNTLESS ISLANDS. EXHIBITS EXPLORE THE STRATEGY FOR FIGHTING RELENTLESS JAPANESE FORCES... AND THE EXTREME CONDITIONS THAT AMERICAN MILITARY FORCES FACED. MEANWHILE ANDREW MCCREA TAKES US TO TEXAS WHERE A MUSEUM STANDS AS A TESTAMENT TO THE MAN WHO LED THE U-S NAVY IN THE PACIFIC DURING WORLD WAR TWO. THIS BATTLEFIELD MIGHT LOOK LIKE IT'S FROM SOMEWHERE IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN. BUT IT'S ACTUALLY IN THE MIDDLE OF FREDRICKSBURG, TEXAS. AND THE REASON IT'S HERE HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH A MAN THAT GREW UP IN TEXAS HILL COUNTRY. TRAVELING THE COUNTRYSIDE, IN FREDRICKSBURG, TEXAS, I'M ANDREW MCCRAE.
PITCH TO MCCREA:
ANDREW WILL JOIN US THROUGH-0UT THE REMAINDER OF THIS SHOW WITH OTHER STORIES ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF WORLD WAR TWO....INCLUDING A WOMAN WHO SURVIVED THE HORROR OF NAZI ATROCITIES...AND HER WILLINGESS TO FORGIVE. PLUS MEET A MAN WITH SUCH UNIQUE LANGUAGE SKILLS THAT THE MILITARY SAW HIM AS A SECRET WEAPON.
HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR FORGIVES:
SOME OF THE BIGGEST LESSONS IN OUR HISTORY BOOKS ARE THE HARDEST TO READ OR HEAR. WHILE WE'RE NEVER KNOW THE FULL EXTENT OF THE PAIN SOME OF OUR ANCESTORS HAVE ENDURED. ANDREW MCCREA TELLS US A STORY OF FORGIVENESS, IN A TIME OF INTENSE HATE. AND TODAY, IT'S BEING TOLD OVER AND OVER AT THE HOLLOCAUST MUSEUM IN TERRA HAUTE, INDIANA.
EVA KOR WAS BORN IN PORTZ, TRANSYLVANIA ROMANIA IN 1934…THE TIME OF HER BIRTH WAS THE SAME TIME ADOLF HITLER WAS RISING TO POWER IN GERMANY. HER JEWISH FAMILY FACED INCREASING DISCRIMINATION AND PERSECUTION, UNTIL EARLY IN 1944 WHEN HER FAMILY WAS DEPORTED TO A GHETTO. TWO MONTHS LATER, THE FAMILY WAS HERDED TO A TRAIN STATION HEADED TO AN UNKNOWN LOCATION.  TRAVELING THE COUNTRYSIDE IN TERRA HAUTE INDIANA, I'M ANDREW MCCREA.
TEASE:
ANDREW SAYS ARSONISTS BURNED THE HOLOCAUST MUSEUM IN 2003. BUT THANKS TO NUMEROUS DONATIONS -IT WAS RE-BUILT. NEXT A UNIQUE LANGUAGE -AND HOW IT HELPED AMERICA DEFEAT THE ENEMY IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC.

NATIVE AMERICAN  CODE TALKER:
DURING WORLD WAR TWO, JAPANESE SOLDIERS WERE PARTICULARLY ADEPT AT BREAKING TOP SECRET U-S MILITARY CODES. TO COUNTER THIS, THE U-S MILITARY DEVELOPED A SYSTEM TO CON-FOUND' THE ENEMY, USING THE SKILLS OF NATIVE AMERICANS. ANDREW MCCREA TAKES US TO THE NAVAJO RESERVATION IN ARIZONA TO MEET A MAN WHO FOUND HIMSELF IN THE THICK OF THE BATTLE AS A CODETALKER. IN 1940, THERE WERE ONLY A FEW PEOPLE OUTSIDE OF THOSE LIVING ON THE NAVAJO NATION WHO COULD SPEAK THE NAVAJO LANGUAGE. DURING WORLD WAR II THAT FACT WOULD BECOME IMPORTANT, WHEN YOUNG MEN FROM THIS COMMUNITY WERE ASKED TO BECOME WHAT WE TODAY KNOW AS CODE TALKERS. ROY HAWTHORNE WAS ONE OF THEM.
TEASE:
UP NEXT, A LIGHTER LOOK AT THE WAR.....AND THE SUSTENANCE THAT KEPT SOLDIERS GOING. JOIN TOP PRODUCER MAGAZINE FOR TOMORROW'S TOP PRODUCER SEMINAR IN NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE. LEARN HOW YOU CAN PUSH FARMING FORWARD. TO REGISTER VISIT TOMORROWS TOP PRODUCER.COM

IN THE COUNTRY:
DURING THE COURSE OF WORLD WAR TWO, MILLIONS OF FIGHTING MEN WERE SHIPPED OVERSEAS. TO SUSTAIN THEM THE U-S MILITARY WAS LOOKING FOR AN ABUNDANT, CHEAP AND EASY WAY TO TRANSPORT PROTEIN TO THE BATTLE FIELD. THE SOLUTION CAME IN THE UN-MISTAKEABLE FORM OF SPAM. ACCORDING TO HORMEL FOODS, FEW PEOPLE ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THE WORD "SPAM" MEANS. SOME BELIEVE IT'S SHORT FOR SPICED HAM. OTHERS THINK IT'S AN ACRONYM FOR 'SPECIALLY PROCESSED AMERICAN MEAT". WHATEVER THE NAME, THE U-S MILITARY BOUGHT PLENTY OF IT. MORE THAN 150-MILLION POUNDS OF SPAM WAS PURCHASED BY THE END OF THE WAR.

CLOSING:
THAT'S ALL THE TIME WE HAVE THIS MORNING. WE'RE GLAD YOU TUNED IN. AS WE GO THROUGH THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND, MAY WE REMEMBER THE EFFORT, THE SACRIFICES AND THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO DID SO MUCH TO PROTECT OUR FREEDOM. FROM ALL OF HERE AT AGDAY, THANK YOU AND HAVE A GOOD DAY IN FARM COUNTRY.
PROMO:
