HARVEST OF THANKS
NOVEMBER 27, 2014

WELCOME:
HELLO AND WELCOME TO HARVEST OF THANKS. I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. AND I'M TYNE MORGAN. EACH YEAR AT THIS TIME, WE PAUSE FROM OUR DAILY ROUTINE FOR OUR ANNUAL THANKSGIVING SALUTE TO AMERICA'S FARMERS AND RANCHERS...WHO ALWAYS SEEM TO PERSEVERE OVER TREMENDOUS ODDS. FOR ONE FARMER, HARVEST WAS CUT-SHORT THIS YEAR. IT WASN'T DUE TO WEATHER OR HEALTH BUT THEFT!  BETSY JIBBEN TAKES US TO NORTHWEST ILLINOIS FOR THIS "CROP CAPER"
THANKFUL FARMERS:
THANKS BETSY. A TIME OF CHALLENGES BUT YET PLENTY OF PERSPECTIVE ON AN OTHERWISE BOUNTIFUL YEAR. THAT'S RIGHT TYNE. IT HAS BEEN ANOTHER YEAR OF HIGHS AND LOWS IN OUR FARMING COMMUNITY. BUT TIME AND AGAIN, AMERICA'S FARMERS AND RANCHERS FIND A WAY TO STAY GROUNDED IN PURPOSE. WE BEGIN WITH WHEAT HARVEST IN HILLSBORO, KANSAS.
TEASE:
NEXT, WE HIT THE HOLIDAY ROADS WITH ANDREW MCCREA AS HE FINDS A DINER WHICH IS STILL THANKFULLY SERVING-UP THE BLUE PLATE SPECIAL, IN PART BECAUSE OF THE SILVER SCREEN. AND LATER, WE'RE OFF TO WESTERN MICHIGAN TO MEET A TURKEY PRODUCER WHO SAYS 2014 PROVIDED NUMEROUS BLESSINGS.
RT 66 CAFE:
THANKSGIVING WEEKEND IS ONE OF THE BUSIEST TRAVEL TIMES OF THE YEAR. TRIPLE A MOTOR CLUB EXPECTS 45-MILLION AMERICANS WILL HIT THE ROAD TO SEE LOVED ONES. ... AND MOST OF THOSE TRAVELERS WILL BE ON THE NATION'S HIGHWAYS AND BI-WAYS. ONE STORIED HIGHWAY - ROUTE 66 - OFFERS UNIQUE PLACES TO VISIT AND STAY. AS HE TRAVELS THE AMERICAN COUNTRYSIDE, ANDREW MCCREA TAKES US TO HOLBROOK, ARIZONA... A TOWN THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN IF NOT FOR SOME COLORFUL CHARACTERS...
TEASE:
THANKS ANDREW. WHAT A NEAT TOWN. STILL TO COME, JOHN PHIPPS WILL JOIN US WITH HIS ANNUAL MESSAGE OF THE SEASON. IT'LL RING TRUE FOR THOSE OF YOU STILL TRYING TO BRING-IN THE LATE CROP. BUT FIRST WE'LL VISIT A TURKEY PRODUCER WHO SAYS ITS BEEN A YEAR OF BLESSINGS..TYNE HAS HIS STORY WHEN WE RETURN.
TYNE’S TURKEY:
THE AROMA OF BAKED TURKEY IS WAFTING THROUGH THE HOUSE. THAT BIG BIRD IS THE CENTERPIECE FOR MANY HOLIDAY TABLES. DON'T YOU LOVE IT! I TALKED WITH A TURKEY PRODUCER FROM HOLLAND, MICHIGAN WHO SAYS THEY HAVE PLENTY TO BE THANKFUL FOR THIS YEAR.
TEASE:
STILL TO COME ON A HARVEST OF THANKS, FRUITCAKE IS OFTEN MALIGNED...WE'LL MEET A GROUP OF BAKERS WHO SAY THE PASTRY HAS A HIGHER CALLING....PLUS, WEATHERING THE TRIALS OF HARVEST WITH JOHN PHIPPS.
FRUITCAKE MONKS:
LET'S NOT RUSH THINGS - LET'S ENJOY THANKSGIVING....BUT OF COURSE, WE'RE ALSO STARTING OUR COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS. A GROUP OF TRAPPIST MONKS IN THE MISSOURI OZARKS HAS BEEN WORKING ON CHRISTMAS 'CAKES FOR WEEKS. STEVE GRANT SAYS THE BROTHERS ARE IN THEIR 27TH YEAR PRODUCING A HOLIDAY FAVORITE THAT SOME SAY IS DIVINE.
TEASE BACKUPS:
THANKS STEVE. STILL NOT SURE ABOUT FRUITCAKE...UP NEXT, JOHN PHIPPS JOINS US WITH SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT BRINGING HOME HARVEST - ESPECIALLY WHEN WEATHER DOESN'T COOPERATE.
JOHN’S COMMENTARY:
IN THE NATION'S MID-SECTION, WINTER STARTED EARLY THIS YEAR. HARVEST FOR SOME FARMERS - ESPECIALLY IN THE UPPER MIDWEST - CAME TO AN ABRUPT HALT. WEATHER CHALLENGES ARE WOVEN INTO THE FABRIC OF FARMING. WHETHER IT'S AN EARLY ARRIVAL OF SNOW IN THE FALL OR AN ABUNDANCE OF RAIN DURING PLANTING SEASON, WEATHER REVEALS THE CHARACTER OF FARMERS. IN HIS ANNUAL THANKSGIVING TRIBUTE, JOHN PHIPPS SHARES HIS MESSAGE OF BRINGING HOME THE HARVEST.
CLOSE:
THANK YOU JOHN. AND OUR THANKS TO 'YOU' FOR SHARING PART OF YOUR THANKSGIVING WITH US. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, THANK YOU FOR WORK YOU DO TO FEED THIS WORLD. IT'S BEEN A GREAT YEAR FOR ALL OF US AT FARM JOURNAL BROADCAST, BUT FOR YOU, TYNE, THE FALL BROUGHT AN EXTRA SPECIAL GIFT. IT SURE DID CLINTON. MY HUSBAND JAMES AND I WERE BLESSED TO BRING KINSLER RENAE INTO THE WORLD. AS FIRST TIME PARENTS, RAISING A CHILD BRINGS CHALLENGES. BUT ALSO AN ABUNDANCE OF JOY TO OUR LIVES...INDEED IT DOES. FROM OUR FAMILIES TO YOURS, WE'RE THANKFUL TO BE PART OF A BUSINESS WHO PROVIDES THE GIFT EACH FALL--A BOUNTIFUL HARVEST. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
