TODAY ON AGDAY
OCTOBER 5, 2014

OPEN HEADLINES:
COMING UP TODAY ON AGDAY -COTTON HARVEST ROLLS ON DESPITE WEATHER CHALLENGES… OUR I-80 HARVEST TOUR TAKES A STOP IN INDIANA. IN AGRIBUSINESS...TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT CASH RENTS…THE LAND OWNERS JUST KIND OF WANT A CHECK THEY JUST WANT THEIR MONEY THEY WANT IT SIMPLE AND THEY DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT ALL OF OUR PROBLEMS NECESSARILY AS A PRODUCER. PLUS, PROTECTING YOUR CANINE HUNTING COMPANION FROM SNAKES THANKS TO SOME SPECIAL TRAINING, AND TIPS FOR BUILDING A WINDBREAK OR SHELTERBELT FOR YOUR HOME OR LIVESTOCK… AGDAY-BROUGHT TO YOU BY CHEVY SILVERADO 2014 NORTH AMERICAN TRUCK OF THE YEAR.
OKLAHOMA COTTON:
IN OKLAHOMA HARVEST IS ABOUT 12 POINTS BEHIND AVERAGE. OVER IN THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE STATE-- IT'S A TALE OF TWO CROPS. PLACES THAT GOT RAIN HAVE QUALITY BOLLS, AND LOTS OF THEM. THE USDA EXPECTS OKLAHOMA FARMERS TO CUT ABOUT 300-THOUSAND BALES IN 2014. AND YET THIS CROP...JUST A FEW MILES AWAY MISSED AN INCH AND HALF OF RAIN....BOLLS ARE SPOTTY AND FIELDS ARE BEING ABANDONED. DESPITE THE CHALLENGES, AGRONOMISTS SAY IT'S THE BEST YEAR THEY'VE HAD SINCE 2010.
BB 180 HARVEST TOUR:
THE I-80 HARVEST TOUR IS BROUGHT TO SPONSORED BY THE ENLIST WEED CONTROL SYSTEM FROM DOW AGROSCIENCES. A NEW HERBICIDE AND TREAT SYSTEM THAT WILL BUILD ON GLYPHOSATE...
CROP WATCH:
LET’S CHECK IN ON CROPS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. OUR OWN MIKE HOFFMAN HAS THAT IN THIS MORNING'S CROPWATCH. GOOD MORNING MIKE.
ANALYSIS CHRIS BARON:
HERE AT THE AGRIBUSINESS DESK WE'RE TALKING WITH CHRIS BARRON OF AG VIEW SOLUTIONS CHRIS YOU AND I WERE TALKING OFF CAMERA ABOUT CASH RENTS AND THERE’S A LOT OF WAYS TO CASH RENTS SOME PEOPLE ARE KIND OF SHIFTING THEIR CASH RENT OVER TO MAYBE A COST SHARE OPERATION SO WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT NEED TO BE CONSIDERED. WELL YEA I THINK THAT'S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY IS IF YOU CAN NEGOTIATE SOME SORT OF A OF A VARIABLE CASH RENT TYPE OF THING HOWEVER MY EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN THAT MANY OF THE LAND OWNERS JUST KINK OF WHAT A CHECK THEY JUST WANT THEIR MONEY THEY WANT IT SIMPLE AND THEY DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT ALL OF OUR PROBLEMS NECESSARILY AS A PRODUCER AND SO, AND THE HIGHER THE CHECK IS THE BETTER. YEA AND SO YOU KNOW SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH PRODUCERS ON IS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW WE COME TO THE TABLE UNDERSTANDING THAT THE FARMER HAS A PERSPECTIVE THE LAND OWNER HAS A PERSPECTIVE SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE IS REALITY AND SO WHAT WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO DO IS PUT TOGETHER THE REALITY OF THE LAST 5 YEARS AND CHART THAT INFORMATION SO THAT THAT WAY THE LAND OWNER CAN SEE WHERE THE PRODUCER IS COMING FROM SO FOR EXAMPLE IF YOU GO BACK AND LOOK AT THE PRICES IN 2009 AND 10 WE WERE DEALING WITH 4 DOLLAR CORN YOU KNOW WE GOT THE PRICE RALLY IN IN YOU KNOW REALISTICALLY WE'VE GOT THE PRICE RALLY WITH THE FARMER GOT CAME IN 11 AND 12 IN 13 WE ALREADY HAD A PRICE DECLINE AND SO KNOW WE'RE BACK TO SUB 4 DOLLAR CORN AND THE CASH RENT PRICES ARE UP WHERE THEY WERE IN GENERAL WHEN WE HAD YOU KNOW 6.50 OR 7 DOLLAR CORN AND SO YOU KNOW IF WE PUT THOSE THINGS DOWN AND CHART THOSE THINGS AND THAT'S WHAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING PRODUCERS ON IT'S AMAZING HOW WE CAN START TO UNDERSTAND REALITY INSTEAD OF JUST HAVING A PERSPECTIVE AND THE SAME THING WITH YIELD TO WERE WE'LL PUT TOGETHER THE LAST 5 YEARS OF YIELDS AND TYPICALLY THE YIELD IS NEVER AS GOOD AS WHAT WE THINK IT WAS.  SO IF YOU’RE A LAND OWNER YOU REALLY NEED TO BE TALKING TO THE PRODUCER AND VICE VERSA THAT SORT OF THING BUT WHAT IF YOU GET IN A SITUATION WHERE PRODUCERS ARE TRYING TO GET MORE LAND AND WILL PAY MORE THAN IT'S REALLY WORTH IN ORDER TO GET IT.THAT'S A TOUGH ONE AND I GUESS YOU CAN DO THAT FOR A WHILE BUT YOU REALLY GOT TO LOOK AT YOUR BALANCE SHEET AND YOU GOT TO LOOK AT YOUR CASH FLOW AND ASK YOURSELF HOW MUCH RISK AM I WILLING TO TAKE AND HOW COMPETITIVE DO I WANT TO BE BECAUSE AT SOME POINT YOU KNOW YOU HAVE TO MAKE MONEY AND SO IT'S THINKING ABOUT YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR PRIORITIES ARE I GUESS WITH THAT. BOTTOM LINE IS SETTLING UP SO YOU CAN MAKE SOME MONEY.  RIGHT.  CHRIS BARRON OUR GUEST HERE AT AGDAY BACK WITH MORE IN A MOMENT.
WX:
WELCOME BACK TO AGDAY HERE WITH METEOROLOGIST MIKE HOFFMAN. NOW MIKE WE'RE KIND OF WATCHING THIS SYSTEM. BOY IT’S REALLY PULLING SOME MOISTURE OUT OF THE GULF. YEAH IT DOES HAVE A LOT OF MOISTURE AND I THINK THERE'S SOME PACIFIC MOISTURE IN THAT AS WELL FEEDING ACROSS MEXICO. SO YOU ADD THE TWO COMBINED AND YOU GET SOME PRETTY IMPRESSIVE RAIN AMOUNTS WHICH WE'LL SHOW YOU COMING UP. BUT THE AREA OF LOW PRESSURE RIGHT NOW IS IN THE EASTERN TEXAS. WE ALSO HAVE A WEAK SYSTEM DIVING ACROSS THE UPPER MIDWEST. RAIN EVEN MIXED WITH SOME SNOW ON THE NORTHERN FRINGES OF IT. AND ONE MORE SYSTEM COMING INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, SO LET’S PUT THE MAPS INTO MOTION. THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVING THROUGH THE SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI VALLEY…YOU CAN NOTICE THERE'S STILL A LOT OF MOISTURE BEHIND THAT SECOND COLD FRONT WHICH IS STILL LINGERING ACROSS CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN TEXAS. SO THAT WILL JUST ADD TO YOUR MOISTURE AND MOST OF THAT AREA COULD USE IT. ITS ALSO GOING TO BE SPREADING QUICKLY ON UP THROUGH THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS, MUCH OF THE TENNESSEE VALLEY...THIS IS JUST LIGHT RAIN AND SNOW WITH THIS SYSTEM MOVING THROUGH THE UPPER MIDWEST. BUT AS IT STARTS TO GET CLOSER TO THE MAIN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE WE'LL SEE IT COMBINE AND START TO PICK UP SOME OF THAT MOISTURE AS WELL. NOT A LOT OF MOISTURE SO FAR AT LEAST INTO TOMORROW MORNING FOR THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST BUT WE'LL START TO SEE SOME OF THOSE RAIN SHOWERS COMING IN EVEN INTO NORTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA BY THE END OF THE DAY TOMORROW. AND YOU CAN SEE THE SYSTEM ALMOST COMBINE BY LATE IN THE DAY TOMORROW. THOSE WILL BE SOME RAIN SHOWERS ACROSS MOST OF THE GREAT LAKES BUT THE HEAVIER RAIN IS GONG TO BE ON UP INTO NEW ENGLAND THE WAY IT LOOKS. PROBABLY EVEN SOME SNOWFLAKES IN THE NORTHWEST SIDE OF THAT SYSTEM…THERE'S THE PRECIPITATION ESTIMATES OVER THE PAST 24 HOURS AND YOU CAN SEE 1-2 INCH AMOUNTS ACROSS MUCH OF CENTRAL TEXAS. NORTHEAST TEXAS INTO ARKANSAS…ADDING ON THE NEXT 36 HOURS…YOU CAN SEE SOME AREAS END UP WITH 3-4 INCHES TOTAL OUT OF THIS SYSTEM. WHICH IS PROBABLY THE MOST RAIN YOU'VE SEEN IN MONTHS  AND THAT WILL CONTINUE TO SPREAD ON UP TO THE NORTHEAST. SO IT LOOKS LIKE TEXAS IS KIND OF THE PLACE THAT GETS THE MOST OUT OF THIS. AS FAR AS SNOWFALL IS CONCERNED, NOT MUCH OVER THE PAST 24...NOT A WHOLE LOT WITH THAT SYSTEM MOVING THROUGH THE UPPER MIDWEST. LETS CHECK TEMPERATURES THEN YOU CAN SEE HIGHS TODAY ONLY IN THE 40'S ALONG THE CANADIAN BORDER. 70'S BY THE TIME YOU GET INTO THE FAR SOUTHEAST SO KIND OF COOL ACROSS MOST OF THE CORN BELT. HIGH TEMPERATURES TOMORROW 40'S AND 50'S IN THE CORN BELT BUT 20 OF THESE LOWS TOMORROW MORNING I SHOULD SAYS...20'S AND 30'S ACROSS THE NORTHERN PLAINS STATES AND HIGH TEMPERATURES TOMORROW STILL IN THE 40'S FOR THE MOST PART. GREAT LAKES AND PARTS OF NEW ENGLAND BUT 70'S BY THE TIME YOU GET DOWN TO THE GULF COAST. AND CHECKING OUT THE JET STREAM YOU CAN SEE TROUGH MOVING THROUGH THE GREAT LAKES. KIND OF A CUT OFF THERE IN THE SOUTHWEST WHICH HELPS WITH THAT MOISTURE…THAT'S WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE PACIFIC MOISTURE. THEN WE HAVE MULTIPLE TROUGHS DIVING INTO THE EASTERN PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. IT LOOKS LIKE MORE AND COLDER AIR GOING TO BE DIVING INTO THE EASTERN HALF OF THE LOWER 48 OVER THE NEXT WEEK. THAT'S A LOOK ACROSS THE COUNTRY NOW LETS TAKE A LOOK AT SOME LOCAL FORECASTS. WE'LL HEAD TO LANDER WYOMING FIRST OF ALL PARTLY SUNNY AND COOL TODAY. HIGH TEMPERATURE AROUND 57 DEGREES…BATON ROUGE LOUISIANA CLOUDY COOL WITH A COUPLE OF SHOWERS AROUND HIGH 79, AND SYRACUSE NEW YORK A MIXTURE OF CLOUDS AND SUNSHINE HIGH TEMPERATURE AROUND 57...
