TODAY ON AGDAY:
MARCH 07, 2011

ROOK CATTLE PRICES:
U.S. CATTLE PRODUCERS HAD A BANNER YEAR IN 2010. TIGHT SUPPLIES AND THE EASING OF THE GLOBAL RECESSION LEAD TO STRONG DEMAND AND RECORD PRICES FOR BOTH FED AND FEEDER CATTLE. AFTER SUFFERING RECORD LOSSES IN 2008 AND 2009, THOSE ATTENDING THE NCBA CONVENTION IN DENVER WERE OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE YEAR AHEAD. AGDAY'S MICHELLE ROOK HAS THE OUTLOOK FOR CATTLE PRICES IN 2011, ESPECIALLY IN LIGHT OF RISING FEED COSTS. ANOTHER KEY THAT WILL DETERMINE IF CATTLE PRICES CAN SUSTAIN THEIR RECORD HIGH LEVELS IN 2011 WILL BE WHAT THE FUNDS DO. THEY HELD A RECORD LONG POSITION IN LIVE CATTLE FUTURES AT THE END OF 2010 WHICH HELPED PUSH PRICES TO NEW CONTRACT HIGHS.

VILSACK COMMODITY:
AG SECRETARY TOM VILSACK WAS THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER FRIDAY DURING THE GENERAL SESSION OF COMMODITY CLASSIC IN TAMPA, FLORIDA. HE SAYS AMERICAN FARMERS ARE LEADING THE ECONOMIC RECOVERY IN THIS COUNTRYPART OF HIS MESSAGE INCLUDE A STRONG DEFENSE FOR THE ETHANOL INDUSTRY. HE SAYS THE USDA IS WORKING ON SCIENCE TO PROVE ETHANOL IS A NET PRODUCER OF ENERGY. ADDING THE WAY ETHANOL IS PRODUCED TODAY IS MUCH DIFFERENT THAN HOW IT STARTED. HE'S WORRIED MISINFORMATION AND CALLS FOR CUTS IN THE FEDERAL BUDGET WILL HAMPER THE GROWTH OF A MATURING INDUSTRY. VILSACK BELIEVES BIOFUELS HAS THE ABILITY TO EMPLOY ONE MILLION PEOPLE IN RURAL AMERICA AND CREATE 100 BILLION DOLLARS IN CAPITAL INVESTMENT AS NEW BIO-REFINERIES ARE BUILT. HE SAYS DOING SO WILL HELP THE U.S. GROW ITSELF OUT OF ITS BUDGET PROBLEMS NOT JUST CUT ITS WAY OUT.

THE WEEK AHEAD:
THE MARKET WILL BE WATCHING THURSDAY WHEN USDA RELEASES ITS SUPPLY-DEMAND FIGURES, PLUS ALL EYES REMAIN ON LIBYA. PRO FARMERS ROGER BERNARD HAS DETAILS IN THE WEEK AHEAD.

CANADA BSE:
CANADA IS REPORTING ITS FIRST CONFIRMED CASE OF BSE IN MORE THAN A YEAR. OFFICIALS SAY IT'S A SIX YEAR DAIRY COW IN ALBERTA. THE 77-MONTH-OLD ANIMAL WAS CONFIRMED IN MID FEBRUARY TO HAVE HAD THE BRAIN-WASTING DISEASE, THIS IS CANADA'S 18TH DOMESTIC CASE SINCE 2003. WWW.CATTLENETWORK.COM IS REPORTING THE CASE HAS NOT BEEN FORMALLY REPORTED BY CANADIAN OFFICIALS.

DEERE DUPONT ADMIRED:
IN AGRIBUSINESS, TWO MAJOR AG PLAYERS ARE LISTED IN FORTUNE MAGAZINE'S ANNUAL RANKING OF THE WORLD'S MOST ADMIRED AND RESPECTED COMPANIES. DUPONT - WHICH IS THE PARENT COMPANY OF PIONEER - IS RANKED 43RD. DEERE AND COMPANY IS RANKED 39TH.
DEERE WAS RANKED FIRST OVERALL IN THE INDUSTRIAL AND FARM EQUIPMENT INDUSTRY FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2008. COMPANIES ARE RANKED IN NINE CATEGORIES, SUCH AS INNOVATION, QUALITY OF PRODUCTS, MANAGEMENT QUALITIES, FINANCIAL SOUNDNESS, AND SO ON. OVERALL, DEERE RANKS AS THE 39TH MOST ADMIRED COMPANY, UP FOUR SPOTS FROM LAST YEAR. DUPONT MOVED UP SIX SPOTS FROM LAST YEAR. APPLE AND GOOGLE WERE RANKED NUMBERS ONE AND TWO.

IN THE COUNTRY; MONKS AT WORK:
WHAT DO YOU CALL SOMEONE WHO GROWS HIS OWN CROPS, MANAGES A COW-CALF HERD, BAKES BREAD, SEWS CLOTHING AND MAKES HIS OWN SOAP? "SELF SUFFICIENT" WOULD SUFFICE. BUT YOU WOULD ALSO BE DESCRIBING A BENEDICTINE MONK. CLIFF NAYLOR TELLS US ABOUT THE INDEPENDENT LIFESTYLE OF THIS RESOURCEFUL RELIGIOUS ORDER. A NEW WAY TO SELL "THE OTHER WHITE MEAT"...DETAILS IN FOOD AND YOUR FAMILY.

IN THE COUNTRY; PORK PROMOTION:
IN FOOD AND YOUR FAMILY, THE POPULAR MARKETING PHRASE "THE OTHER WHITE MEAT" IS GOING TO GET PUSHED TO THE BACK BURNER FOR AWHILE. THE NATIONAL PORK BOARD ANNOUNCED A NEW BRANDING POSITION WHICH CELEBRATES PORK'S VERSATILITY. THE NEW SLOGAN IS "PORK - BE INSPIRED". THE PORK BOARD SAYS THIS CAMPAIGN IS INTENDED TO SHOW HOW PORK CAN BE USED IN ANY MENU, FOR ANY MEAL. THE NEW CAMPAIGN ROLLS OUT THIS MARCH AND APRIL. IT'LL INCLUDE NATIONAL ADVERTISING, PUBLIC RELATIONS, SOCIAL MEDIA, RETAIL AND FOODSERVICE MARKETING. THE CHECKOFF SAYS "THE OTHER WHITE MEAT" CAMPAIGN WILL STILL BE AROUND, BUT NOT AS PROMIMENT OF A ROLE. THAT'S ALL THE TIME WE HAVE THIS MORNING. WE'RE GLAD YOU TUNED IN. FOR CINDI CLAWSON AND CLINTON GRIFFITHS, I'M AL PELL. HAVE A GREAT DAY.
