DECEMBER 17, 2013

DAIRY FEED COSTS:

GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS.  AS 2013 COMES TO A CLOSE, THE NATION'S LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS ARE BREATHING A SIGH OF RELIEF--FEED PRICES ARE FALLING IN MANY PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.

ROBOTICS:

LOWER FEED PRICES SHOULD BE GOOD NEWS FOR THE NATIONS DAIRY'S. EVEN AS MANY PRODUCERS STRUGGLE TO FIND AN ADEQUATE WORKFORCE TO MILK THE HERD. AND WITH UNCERTAINTY OF IMMIGRATION REFORM IN WASHINGTON, THE OUTLOOK FOR ANY CHANGE IS UN-CLEAR. THAT'S WHY SOME DAIRY PRODUCERS ARE OPTING FOR ROBOTIC MILKING SYSTEMS. BUT AS NATIONAL REPORTER TYNE MORGAN TELLS US, ADOPTION OF THAT TECHNOLOGY IS NOT INDUSTRY-WIDE.

DAIRY DUST:

MEANWHILE USDA RESEARCHERS SAY DUST STIRRED-UP ON DAIRY FARMS 'DOES' CONTAIN BACTERIA AND FUNGI. BUT THEY ARE NOT HIGH LEVELS BEYOND THE BARNYARD. AG DEPARTMENT MICROBIOLIGISTS STUDIED DISPERSAL PATTERNS OF WHAT THEY CALL BIO-AEROSOLS.  THEY WERE CAUSED BY WIND OR RESTLESS CATTLE KICKING-UP DIRT. IN THE WESTERN U-S, DAIRY COWS ARE KEPT IN OUTDOOR PENS AND AT OPEN-FREESTALL FACILITIES.  RESIDENTS IN NEARBY COMMUNITIES WANTED TO KNOW IF THEIR PROXIMITY TO THESE FACILITIES INCREASES THE POTENTIAL RISK OF EXPOSURE TO AIRBORNE MICRO-ORGANISMS. BACTERIAL CONCENTRATIONS WERE HIGHER CLOSER TO BARNS AT NIGHT WHEN THE HERDS WERE IN THE OPEN STALLS.

HORSE SLAUGHTER UPDATE:

FROM THE AGDAY UPDATE FILE - A FEDERAL APPEALS COURT ON FRIDAY REMOVED A TEMPORARY BAN ON DOMESTIC HORSE SLAUGHTER. THAT MOVE CLEARS THE WAY FOR COMPANIES TO OPEN IN THREE STATES - NEW MEXICO, MISSOURI AND IOWA. HOWEVER, IT DOES NOT STOP AN APPEAL OF A LAWSUIT BY ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUPS. THE 10TH U-S CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS LIFTED THE EMERGENCY INJUNCTION IT ISSUED IN NOVEMBER. THE APPEALS COURT'S ORDER SAID THE GROUPS FIGHTING LEGAL HORSE SLAUGHTER HAD "FAILED TO MEET THEIR BURDEN FOR AN INJUNCTION."

MISSOURI SUES CALIFORNIA:

THE STATE OF MISSOURI IS TAKING CALIFORNIA TO COURT OVER ITS LAW PROHIBITING THE SALE OF EGGS FROM OTHER STATES THAT DON'T MEET ITS STRICT STANDARDS. CALIFORNIA IS IMPLEMENTING LARGER CAGE STANDARDS FOR EGG-LAYING HENS. MISSOURI'S ATTORNEY GENERAL USED THE MISSOURI FARM BUREAU'S ANNUAL MEETING LAST WEEK TO ANNOUNCE THAT HE INTENDS TO SUE THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO OVERTURN A LAW THAT WILL LIMIT MOST COMMERCIALLY-PRODUCED EGGS FROM ENTERING THE STATE. THE MISSOURI FARM BUREAU PRESIDENT SAYS CALIFORNIA'S BAN WOULD BE LIKE MISSOURI BANNING CALIFORNIA WINE BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE THE WAY THEY PRODUCE IT.

CROP WATCH:

GOOD MORNING, I'M MIKE HOFFMAN. AS WE GET CLOSER TO CHRISTMAS, FARMERS FROM ILLINOIS - OUTSIDE CHICAGO - ARE REMEMBERING THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO SERVED OUR COUNTRY AND ARE NOW BURIED AT THE LINCOLN NATIONAL CEMETERY IN ELWOOD, ILLINOIS. AS PART OF WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA, A GROUP OF FARMERS MET SATURDAY DURING A SNOW-STORM. THEY PLACED WREATHS ON 64-HUNDRED GRAVES AT THE CEMETERY. DAVE KESTEL - WHO SENT THIS PHOTO - IS ONE OF THE FARMERS WE PROFILED DURING OUR I-80 HARVEST TOUR. OUR THANKS TO DAVE AND THE OTHER FARMERS WHO TOOK PART IN THIS ADMIRABLE CAUSE.

PANAMA GRAIN:

THE U.S. GRAINS COUNCIL, THE USDA AND US TRADE REPRESENTATIVE SAY THEY'VE SUCCEEDED IN KEEPING THE PANAMA MARKET OPEN FOR U.S. CORN. A FEW MONTHS AGO THE PANAMANIAN GOVERNMENT SAID IT WOULD CLOSE ITS DOOR TO CORN IMPORTS FROM JANUARY THROUGH APRIL. AFTER DISCUSSING THE ISSUE, THE NEW FREE TRADE PARTNER AGREED TO KEEP GRAIN FLOWING IN 2014.

ANALYSIS:

IN AGRIBUSINESS - THE CALENDAR IS QUICKLY COMING TO AN END FOR 2013. THAT MEANS NOT ONLY A NEW YEAR, BUT SOME POSSIBLE - IF NOT PROBABLE - LOST TAX BENEFITS FOR FARMERS. FARM DIRECTOR AL PELL DISCUSSED THESE IMPENDING CHANGES WITH TAX EXPERT AND CPA PAUL NEIFFER.

THE PEPPER PEOPLE:

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE PEPPER. IS IT POPULAR GREEN BELL, OR DO YOU LIKE SOMETHING WITH A LITTLE MORE "POP" TO IT. WHATEVER IT IS, CHANCES ARE THE WINSBERG FAMILY - THE PEPPER PEOPLE FROM PALO ALTO - GROWS IT. TRACY SELLERS FROM CALIFORNIA BOUNTIFUL TAKES US TO THEIR FAMILY OPERATION, SIMPLY CALLED "HAPPY QUAIL".

RAW MILK WARNING:

IN THE DEBATE OVER THE VIRTUES OF UN-PASTEURIZED MILK, PEDIATRICIANS ARE NOW FORMALLY SAYING 'NO' TO RAW MILK. THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS IS ADVISING AGAINST CONSUMPTION OF RAW MILK PRODUCTS.

EZ PASS FAST FOOD:

AND JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT FAST FOOD COULDN'T GET ANY FASTER...INNOVATIONS MAY BE JUST DOWN THE ROAD.
