DROUGHT MONITOR:

GOOD MORNING I'M AL PELL IN FOR CLINTON GRIFFITHS. WHILE SOME FOLKS ARE DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS, MANY FARMERS AND RANCHERS ARE JUST WISHING OF DECENT WINTER MOISTURE.

USDA OUTLOOK:

THE CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER SAYS THE HARD RED WINTER WHEAT CROP WENT INTO DORMANCY IN MUCH BETTER SHAPE THAN LAST YEAR. BUT IF DRY CONDITIONS PERSIST THIS SPRING, STRESS ON THE CROP WILL AGAIN BE APPARENT.  MEANWHILE - THERE'S A NEW PROBLEM FOR CORN GROWERS IN THE WESTERN CORNBELT - B-T RESISTANCE.  LET'S CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST MIKE HOFFMAN. GOOD MORNING MIKE.

CROP WATCH:

IOWA STATE EXTENSION ENTOMOLOGISTS HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THE WESTERN CORN ROOTWORM HAS BROKEN THROUGH THE EFFECTIVNESS OF A SECOND TOXIN. THAT'S THE LAST THING FARMERS IN THE CORNBELT NEEDED TO HEAR. RHONDA BROOKS - WHO IS THE SEEDS EDITOR FOR FARM JOURNAL - SAYS ENTOMOLOGISTS SAY THE LATEST ROOTWORM RESISTANCE PROBLEM IS WITH EM-CRY-THREE-A. LIKE THE PREVIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE B-T TOXIN, IT WAS FOUND IN CONTINUOUS CORN FIELDS. READ MORE ON THIS DEVELOPING STORY AT AGWEB.COM.

STOLEN SEED UPDATE:

FROM THE AGDAY UPDATE FILE...THE U-S ATTORNEY IN IOWA SAYS SIX MEN FROM CHINA HAVE NOW BEEN INDICTED FOR THEIR ALLEGED INVOLVEMENT IN SCHEME TO STEAL SEED TECHNOLOGY. THE SIX CHINESE NATIONALS ALL WORKED FOR A CHINESE SEED-COMPANY. THE U-S ATTORNEY SAYS BETWEEN SPRING OF 2011 TO DECEMBER OF LAST YEAR, THE MEN CONSPIRED TO STEAL TRADE SECRETS FROM PIONEER, MONSANTO AND L-G SEEDS. THE DEFENDANTS ARE ACCUSED OF TRYING TO STEAL PARENT LINES OF SEED WHICH IS ESTIMATED AT 40 MILLION DOLLARS AND EIGHT YEARS OF RESEARCH.

CHOBANI:

THE TOP GREEK YOGURT BRAND IN THE COUNTRY IS NO LONGER WELCOME AT WHOLE FOODS. THE SPECIALTY GROCER SAYS IT WILL PHASE-OUT SHOW-BONNY YOGURT FROM ITS STORES IN 2014. WHOLE FOODS SAIYS IN A STATEMENT THAT IT IS COMMITTED TO OFFERING PRODUCTS YOU CAN'T FIND ANYWHERE ELSE. YOU CAN BUY SHOW-BONNY IN MOST SUPER-MARKETS.  AND AS THE NATIONAL DEMAND FOR GREEK YOGURT HAS GROWN, THE COMPANY SAYS THE NUMBER OF CONVENTIONAL GREEK YOGURT OPTIONS HAS MULTIPLIED.

RABOBANK:

ON THE STRENGTH OF CHINESE DEMAND, THE GLOBAL DAIRY PICTURE LOOKS BRIGHT IN THE NEW YEAR. BUT IT MAY BE MORE EXPENSIVE FOR OTHER COUNTRIES TO BUY DAIRY PRODUCTS.

ANALYSIS:

EACH YEAR AN ILLINOIS BASED RESEARCH FIRM - NAMED "FIRST" - ANALYZES YIELD RESULTS FROM VARIOUS SEED MAKERS. THOUSANDS OF SAMPLES ARE GATHERED FROM COUNTLESS FIELDS IN A VARIETY OF SOIL CONDITIONS. CEO JOE BRUCE DISCUSSED THE RESULTS OF THEIR SOYBEAN RESEARCH WITH CLINTON GRIFFITHS.

ANGEL TREE:

SADLY THE PROBLEMS OF EVERYDAY LIFE DON'T STOP JUST BECAUSE IT'S CHRISTMAS. BUT THE HOLIDAYS ARE A TIME WHEN WE CAN REACH OUT TO THOSE IN NEED. VOLUNTEERS WITH A FAMILY AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLUB IN ONE TENNESSEE TOWN ARE WORKING THIS SEASON TO BENEFIT A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER.  IN THIS REPORT FROM THE U-T INSTITUTE OF AGRICULTURE CHUCK DENNEY REPORTS ON AN "ANGEL TREE" WHERE THE GIFTS CAN BE LIFE-CHANGING.

FARM RECIPE:

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A SIMPLE BREAKFAST DISH FOR CHRISTMAS MORNING, THIS ONE MAY FILL THAT NEED. THIS WEEK'S RECIPE IS FOR APPLE CRUNCH MUFFINS. WE GOT THE RECIPE OFF AGWEB WHICH POSTS RECIPES FROM THE OLD FARM JOURNAL COOKBOOK. TAKE ONE-AND-A-HALF CUPS OF FLOUR, A HALF CUP OF SUGAR, TWO TEASPOONS OF BAKING POWDER, A HALF TEASPOON OF BOTH SALT AND CINNAMON, A CUP OF SHORTENING, ONE EGG SLIGHTLY BEATEN, A HALF CUP OF MILK AND ONE CUP SHREDDED UN-PARED TART APPLES. SIFT TOGETHER THE DRY INGREDIENTS. CUT IN SHORTENING WITH PASTRY BLENDER UNTIL FINE CRUMBS FORM.  IN A SEPARATE BOWL, COMBINE MILK AND EGGS. ADD TO DRY INGREDIENTS ALL AT ONCE, STIRRING JUST ENOUGH TO MOISTEN. AND THEN STIR IN APPLES. TO MAKE THE TOPPING - MIX TOGETHER A QUARTER CUP OF BROWN SUGAR (PACKED), A HALF CUP OF CHOPPED PECANS AND HALF TEASPOON OF CINNAMON.  SPOON BATTER INTO PAPER LINED TWO AND A HALF INCH MUFFIN CUP PAN, FILLING TWO-THIRDS FULL. SPRINKLE WITH NUT CRUNCH TOPPING. BAKE 375 DEGREE OVEN FOR 25 MINUTES OR UNTIL GOLDEN BROWN. IT MAKES 12 SERVINGS. THE RECIPE CAN ALSO BE BAKED IN A 9-BY-9 INCH SQUARE PAN.

EU CLONES:

ACROSS THE POND, THE EUROPEAN UNION PROPOSED A DRAFT LAW YESTERDAY THAT WOULD BAN THE PRACTICE OF FARM-ANIMAL CLONING. A SIMILAR PROPOSAL WAS REJECTED BY LAWMAKERS IN 2011. IF APPROVED,  CLONING IN COMMERCIAL FARMING WOULD BE BANNED WITHIN THE 28-NATION BLOC FOR FIVE YEARS. IT WOULD ALSO PROHIBIT THE SALE AND IMPORT OF FOOD SUCH AS MEAT OR MILK FROM CLONED ANIMALS. HOWEVER IT WOULD STILL BE LEGAL TO IMPORT AND SELL FOOD FROM THE OFFSPRING OF CLONES.
