AgriGold Will Offer Soybeans for First Time in 2017

“We know corn," AgriGold says in its tagline. But it looks like the corn specialists at AgriGold will soon be adding "and beans" to that statement. AgriGold is adding soybeans to its 2017 lineup.

“The first year will be a limited launch,” says John Kermicle, general manager at AgriGold. “We will have minimum order quantities. The main goal in year one is to get it right.”

The group plans to offer a limited launch as it enters the soybean seed market for the first time. The soybeans will be available anywhere AgriGold corn is sold, but farmers will only have 18 bean varieties from which to choose. Product mix will range from a 1.7 to 5.4 maturities with the heaviest options in the mid-3 maturity range, according to Mike Kavanaugh, agronomy manager.

What traits and genetics will AgriGold offer? The group hasn’t signed on the dotted line with any particular company just yet, so specifics are unknown. “We want to have the latest and greatest,” Kavanaugh says. “We’re waiting to see what technologies get approved.” He expects to favor newer products such as  Enlist, Balance GT or Xtend soybeans over older soybean varieties such as Roundup Ready 2 or Liberty Link.

Although the product won't be available for sale until the 2017 season, you may see a few fields this season with soybeans from AgriGold. The company plans to have a handful of test plots where corn specialists can be trained on the key selling features and agronomics of the company's new soybeans.

“Our people will still be corn specialists, but customers want options,” Kermicle says. “You can start ordering the new soybeans on July 18, 2016.”
