Improve efficiency and yields with these tech tools
With so much information to process in a given day, it’s important to have help. What do you need to remember before choosing your seed for next year’s crop? Put your farm data to use with this sampling of apps:
Corn Planting Calculator: This app provides useful calculations based on row width, seeds per unit, population, seed spacing and cost per unit. Calculations can be made in real time—without WiFi or 3G/4G. The app will work on an iPad, iPhone or iTouch iOS 4.2 or higher.
IRM Refuge Calculator: Developed by the National Corn Growers Association, the calculator helps farmers determine the appropriate refuge calculation for corn, quantity of standard seed bags to purchase for trait and refuge and possible planting configurations for certain corn products. This refuge calculator does not replace or supplement the manufacturer’s IRM Grower Guide.
Extreme Beans: To keep farmers in touch with the latest soybean research, the United Soybean Board developed the Extreme Beans app. It also includes calculators to figure the optimal seeding rate and another offers break-even input costs.
ScoutPro Corn Consulting: Developed by three Iowa State University entrepreneurs, this app generates scouting reports through data entry. The iPad-only tool helps identify weeds, insects, diseases and disorders. Pests are automatically recorded on field maps via GPS coordinates. Users can record stand count, yield checks, irrigation logs and other events. There’s a similar app for soybeans.
