BLM Using Goats to Fight New Mexico Wildfires

14:45PM Jun 04, 2014

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is using goats to prevent future wildfires in New Mexico.

KRQE-TV reports that the federal agency last week launched the goat grazing project on 16 acres in southern New Mexico's Lincoln County.

Officials say the goats are grazing on a season grass that grows in dense clumps up to eight feet tall and is highly flammable.

The BLM says mowing is not sufficient because the grass reseeds itself.

But when goats eat the grass the seeds are gobbled up too.

The grazing expected to last several more weeks.
