Christmas Markets: No Lump of Coal, No Diamond Either

December 24, 2016 06:00 AM

As far as markets go, it’s a ho-hum Christmas

It’s been a tough week for grains as we close out lower for the week but as Jerry Gulke, president of the Gulke Group, reminds us—the market giveth and the market taketh away.

On a positive note, we’re going into a holiday weekend holding—even though it’s holding low, it’s still holding. As Gulke so often says, it could be a lot worse.

While grains are trending downward for the week, cattle and hogs are heading the opposite direction. To sum it up, Gulke says, the Cattle on Feed and Quarterly Hogs and Pigs reports show a little more of everything. According to the report, placements of cattle were higher but weights are down. This could wind up being a wash when it comes to impacting the grain market but it’s something to look for in the next USDA report.

Listen to Jerry Gulke’s advice for farmers in this week’s Weekend Market Report.

Does anyone else read Gulkes commentary and notice that he never says anything that isn't obvious? Hopefully one of these days farm journal and agweb will hire someone that gives useful advice. Merry Christmas

Gulke is like a weather man. He can't forecast anything in the markets accurately. But his hindsight is 20/20. If I followed his advice, I'd be worse off than I am!
