Cookies and Milk: Girl Scouts Reveal ‘Dairy Patch’ in Oregon

The Dairy Patch is among 30 new Girl Scout badges released this year.

Thin Mints, Samoas, Peanut Butter Patties and Lemonades. If you’re a cookie connoisseur, you know the Girl Scout cookie names by heart. You might also know that these delectable delights pair perfectly with an ice-cold glass of milk.

Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington, in partnership with the Tillamook County Creamery Association and Oregon Dairy and Nutrition Council, designed a new Dairy Patch program to educate girls about STEM concepts, farms and food production, and the Oregon dairy industry, according to the Oregon Dairy and Nutrition Council.

To earn this new patch, the Girl Scouts must first complete five steps to gain a better understanding of food and dairy industries. These steps are:

  1. Visit a dairy farm.
  2. Learn how milk gets made into dairy products.
  3. Explore dairy nutrition.
  4. Discover dairy careers.
  5. Taste test dairy products.

After recently hosting an Oregon Dairy Day event at Tillamook Creamery, 200 Girl Scouts of the Oregon and Southwest Washington division were the first to ever receive this patch. The group visited with local dairy farmers, learned about the nutritional benefits of dairy and took a tour of the Tillamook Creamery.

“The Oregon Dairy Patch program is a great opportunity for girls to discover the local food chain. It encourages them to be curious about where their food comes from, and what it takes to get it from the farm to the factory to their table,” said Lisa Gilham-Luginbill, program manager for Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington. “We hope they’ll learn something new along the way, and perhaps discover an interest or future career in the process.”

The Dairy Patch is among 30 new Girl Scout badges released this year. Some of the other badges include the Environmental Stewardship badge, the College Knowledge badge and the Mechanical Engineering badge.
