Corn Crop Maturing at Near-Record Pace

In its Crop Progress report on Monday, USDA said 26% of the nation’s corn crop was in the dented stage, that’s double the five-year average. While it’s not the earliest maturing crop in recent history, it’s close to it.

According to Karen Braun of Thomson Reuters, the 2018 corn crop is the third crop in recent history to be this mature, this early. Surpassed only by 1987 and 2012, the 2018 crop is moving along at a brisk pace that will most likely hurt yield. Check out this graph from Braun.

For the week ending August 12, USDA says 79% of the Texas corn crop was dented, North Carolina and Tennessee followed closely behind Texas. Other states experiencing unusually mature crops include Kansas at 42% dented, Iowa at 22%, Indiana at 26% and Illinois at 45%. In each of those states, the crop is more than twice as mature as the five-year average for this week.

The corn condition remains impeccable with 70% of the crop rated good to excellent. Combined with a good weather forecast, there isn’t much to slow this crop down as farmers approach the finish line. In fact, many are preparing for an earlier than normal harvest.

Suprising the crop can be as good as claimed when we are comparing 87,and 2012 as the only drought years to surpass 2018..

Only thing impeccable around here is the size of the silage piles. "A good weather forecast", whoever wrote that should be kicked in the reproductive organs

If soil moisture is adequate, the speed of maturity will not hurt yields at all. Corn thrives with solar energy. Since we irrigate. 2012 was one of the best yielding years ever for me. 1993 was a cool, cloudy, late maturing year where we did not irrigate at all. I had the worst yields of my 37 year farming career then.
