As spring approaches, it is time to pull out the planter and prep it for fieldwork. During the 2009 National Farm Machinery Show, planters were a hot topic and definitely a show favorite. Check out three new machines from Case IH, John Deere and Kinze, which showcase new technology, enhanced functions and usability.
Case IH: Increased Mobility
The Early Riser 1260 lineup of planters from Case IH now includes 32-row and 36-row configurations with advanced features. To provide greater working widths, improved maneuverability, better stability during transport and more frame flexibility, Case IH has made dramatic changes to its planter toolbar.
A steerable rear axle is available in 36- row 20”, 36-row 22” and 36 row 30” row spacings and 32-row 30” spacings. The castering wheels are used for in-the-field flotation and transport. Turning radius will depend on tractor set up, but as you can see in this video, the steerable rear axle option provides a new way to move planters.
The hydraulics can be set for manual or automated, in which the steering wheel turn matches the rear axle turn. For transport, it's designed to pull like a trailer. Each wing has its own trailer so it has four-wing flex and each wing can walk up and down. The planter breaks in the middle for mid-frame flexibility. The planter bar is built with 12 x 12 steel tubing, and the tires are highway rated truck tires.
These planters have as narrow as a 13' 8” transport, and can be provide up to 19 mph transport stability. The scissor hitch features minimal tongue weight: 3,240 lb. Another feature, pneumatic down pressure is controlled from cab with Pro 600 monitor. AccuRow automated row shut off is also available as well as a 600-gal. liquid fertilizer set up.
John Deere: Major Widths
The John Deere DB 120 takes planter widths to a new level.
The 120' 48-row machine is built on a Bauer Manufacturing frame. With 30” row spacings, the row units are equipped with Pro Max 40 flat disk seed meters. This machine can plant up to 100 acres an hour and has a seed carrying capacity of 125 bu. The planter does not have markers, so it has to be matched with guidance on the tractor. To deliver seed 60' in both directions, the planter has 4 vacuum motors—one for each 12-rows.
The planter has a Cat 5 drawbar, and should be paired with a tractor the size of a 9230 tractor or larger. The transport width is 14'8”, the same as a DB 90 because the end four rows on each side fold onto the planter bar. It's 50' long in transport.
Kinze: Speedy Seed Delivery
At the 2008 National Farm Machinery Show Kinze gave us a first look at their Air Seed Delivery System (ASD). This year, they displayed two planters outfitted with the ASD system.
The 3660 ASD Twin-Line planter is outfitted with two centrally mounted, 55-bu. hoppers. The three-section toolbar allows for 13 degree wing flex up or down with hydraulic wing down-pressure system. The 3660 features integrated EdgeVac vacuum manifolds and air tanks in the toolbar, and the under-hitch clearance has improved with an additional 8”. The planter can be paired with either the Kinze Vision or Kinze Cobalt monitors, and the planter can be equipped with air-actuated single row clutches for automated or manual shut-off of rows.
The 3800 ASD will be available for planting season 2010. This 24-row 30” spacing planter is built with two centrally mounted 55 bu. hopper with the ASD system. The planter can be used with the Kinze Vision or Kinze Cobalt monitoring systems. It features a dual motor variable rate hydraulic driveline. The toolbar frame is segmented with three-sections and the machines has a dedicated transport axle with four Super Single transport tires. An optional 500-gal. liquid fertilizer package is available as well as air-actuated single row clutches for automatic or manual shut-off of rows.
