All in all, 5% of the nation’s corn crop was harvested the week ending September 9, 2018.

Corn harvest is underway throughout farm country. All in all, 5% of the nation’s corn crop was harvested the week ending September 9, 2018. Southern states are well on their way and have been harvesting for weeks. In Texas, 63% of the corn crop is harvested, 43% in North Carolina, 24% in Tennessee and 23% in Kentucky. Several farmers in northern states started harvesting last week. In Illinois, 4% of the crop is harvested, while 2% is harvested in Indiana, 9% in Kansas, and 1% in each Nebraska and Pennsylvania. Drought stricken Missouri has 12% of its corn harvested.

More farmers in the I-states and Kansas would likely have harvested last week if it weren’t for the copious amounts of rain delivered by Tropical Storm Gordon. USDA reported only 3.9 days last week were suitable for field work in Illinois and 2.1 in Iowa. Wisconsin farmers also got more than their fair share of rain last week with only 3.3 days suitable for field work. In Kansas, farmers were only in the field 1.8 days. Farmers there, reported fields with flood waters clear up to the ears on standing corn plants.

Soybeans across the country continue to mature with 31% dropping leaves. Cotton harvest is underway. USDA reported only 10% of the crop was harvested as of last week. Twenty-four percent of sorghum is harvested. In addition, winter wheat planting has begun with 5% of the crop in the ground.
