Dairy Cow Culling Picks Up in September

Dairy farmers sent 14,100 more dairies cows to hamburger heaven in September compared to last year, an increase of 5.9%, reports the United States Department of Agriculture.

September culling was up 26,400 head over August as well. Year-to-date, some 83,000 more cows have been culled this year compared to last, an increase of 4%.

The numbers kinda/sorta fit with Tuesday's milk production report for September. Total cow numbers were down some 5,000 head.

  Falling beef prices, lower milk prices, good replacement supply, sexed semen help make dairy farmers see break-even over milk production costs easy. When death loss is at an industry "standard" of about 6.5 % found as acceptable and many have a tough time to beat that rate - dairy farmers tend to not take the approach to "doctor" or treat a cow that is showing early signs of lameness, weight loss combined with marginal break-even production and reproduction issues. Weekly marketing decisions are made and cattle leave the farm when they just do not fit the description of a well doing cow.....This in the light that just about every imaginable additive or "band-aid" is fed, injected or somehow used adding to the basic cost per cow per day. I suggest we look at the forage and grain along with the purchased supplements. Is it time to investigate for genetic characteristics - like GMO - vs non-GMO? Do we have any testing for our well water that measures for good livestock use? Remember: soybean products, canola, cotton seed and even beet pulp ( including corn grain) are today genetically engineered crops that carry toxins even at low levels. This discussion should be held at every gathering in the upcoming meeting season. Ask a neighbor that has gone non-GMO!
