Deere slashes production at Ottumwa Works

June 3, 2009 11:40 AM

A majority of the production employees at John Deere Ottumwa Works will be laid off until further notice. Employees were notified today that 494 will go on indefinite layoff effective June 29, and 195 employees will experience periodic layoffs over the next several months.

The company says demand by hay and livestock producers is depressed and market conditions will define when employees could return to work. Ottumwa Works manufactures balers, mower conditioners, windrowers and pull-type forage harvesters

Normally, the factory shuts down for two weeks during the summer, and this announcement will be an extension of that shut down.
