Farm businesses across the country are wading through a grinding downturn that some analysts think isn’t even halfway over yet. Will your team have what it takes to survive? Rena Striegel, of Transition Point Business Advisors says there’s a few things you can do to strengthen your “bench.”

“When we talk about the bench, we’re asking ‘What kind of talent do you have that you’re utilizing very well or what development can happen to take that business to the next level?’” she told Pam Fretwell on the Top Producer podcast.

Now is a critical time in agriculture for producers to analyze their team to see if they have the right talent in the right positions to withstand the challenges they will face over the next few years, she says.

Here are three tips Striegel says will strengthen your team:

  1. Set clear expectations for leaders, managers and all employees.
  2. Give good feedback that will enable them to do their best.
  3. Use scientific tools, like a personality and skills profile to ensure your employees are in positions that suit them.
