Dressed Cattle and Hog Weights Decline

Following is the Total Red Meat Production Report for the week ending August 20:

 Estimated Weekly Meat Production Under Federal Inspection

     Total red meat production under Federal inspection for the week
ending Saturday, August 20, 2011 was estimated at 919.2 million lbs.
according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Marketing Service.
This was 0.4 percent lower than a week ago and 2.1 percent lower
than a year ago.  Cumulative meat production for the year to date was
0.6 percent higher compared to the previous year.

Juli says: Dressed cattle weights are 2 lbs. below year-ago levels, while dressed hog weights are now a pound below year-ago levels. Weights make a big difference -- Year-to-date beef production is 0.5% above year-ago levels (0.6% above last week), with pork production running 0.8% above year-ago (0.9% above last week).
