DuPont Pioneer Introduces Soybean T Series for 2013

January 23, 2013 07:00 AM

DuPont Pioneer announced today its new T Series of soybeans will be available for farmers across North America to try on a limited basis this spring. The series includes 39 varieties in seven maturity groups, says Don Schafer, soybean marketing manager for the company.

The varieties fit a wide geography across the U.S., including the mid-South and deep Delta, along with some parts of Canada, Schafer says.

The new T Series is based on the DuPont Pioneer Accelerated Yield Technology (AYT) process, which employs environment-specific markers to help optimize yields by geography.

AYT enables plant breeders to pinpoint native trait genes for increased defensive trait protection and improved pest resistance packages tailored for specific geographies. It employs novel trait integration through a proprietary matrix of gene mapping, molecular breeding technologies and intense local field testing. The system is a key part of a comprehensive plan to accelerate yield gain and broaden resistance to key diseases and insects.

"We know more about the soybean genome today than before, enabling us to pick defensive traits for specific areas and improve our products for our growers," says Jessie Alt, research scientist for DuPont Pioneer.

While limited quantities of the T Series are available this season, the company will have large volumes available for 2014.

"The AYT brand will be north of 30% of our volume in 2014," Schafer says. The T Series will eventually succeed the company’s current Y Series, introduced several years ago.

Among the new class of T Series soybeans, 34 varieties will carry the Roundup Ready gene. There are two new Plenish high oleic varieties, five new products with the LibertyLink gene and two new varieties with the Roundup Ready/STST stack. Also, 32 products are soybean cyst nematode (SCN) resistant, and 29 carry a major Phytophthora-resistant gene. All T Series products will be available with a Pioneer premium seed treatment.

To distinguish the new T Series varieties, DuPont Pioneer implemented a new soybean product numbering system similar to the nomenclature used for Pioneer brand corn products. The new system will use key identifiers, enabling growers to determine maturity and technologies. T Series soybean varieties will be denoted with the letter T in the middle of the product number.
