Editor's Notebook: Climb the AgTech Learning Curve

Are you maximizing the precision technology on your farm? Or are you like one of the many farmers who have shared with us that what you own doesn’t necessarily match what you know how to fully utilize?

More than 75% of the farmers who took a recent Farm Journal Media survey said they use GPS in their fieldwork. But when the survey asked respondents to rank how knowledgeable they are about four major agtech topics, do you know what came in last? This: How to use GPS and other common technology available.

Farm Journal has not only been covering technology as it develops and our readers use it, we’ve also had hands-on experience. Working with Iowa farmer Clay Mitchell and Trimble, we took the first row-crop tractor with auto steer to the field in fall 2000. And since the beginning of the Farm Journal Test Plots program, we have been knee deep in taking new technology to the field.

Harnessing the power of technology to improve profitability is increasingly critical—and challenging. That’s why we’re intensifying our commitment to help you climb the learning curve, whether you call yourself a novice, early adopter or something in between.

You can sign up for our new weekly AgTech newsletter that brings the latest analysis and product news to your inbox each Wednesday. A new AgTech website coming soon will enable you to share insight with other farmers about the technologies working for you or not, among other things.

In December, we’ll host the first annual Farm Journal AgTech Expo in Indianapolis. Take our AgTech IQ quiz and you can win free admission.

I’d love to hear about your biggest agtech successes and challenges. Yes, it sure is a new world. And we’re proud to be your partner in figuring it out.
