Editor's Notebook: Focus on Now

June 24, 2017 02:16 AM

Every word in this issue is aimed at helping you get the most from the crop now in the ground. That’s why we’re focusing on critical opportunities that can intensify this time of year, like identifying the pests popping up this season; managing your crop’s nitrogen uptake; and building into your marketing plan the flexibility you’ll need in the months ahead.

This is also the issue where Chip Flory makes his debut as Farm Journal Economist. Chip, an Iowa farm boy, exemplifies Farm Journal’s commitment: He first got the bug to help farmers one afternoon as a kid, driving with this dad. A Pro Farmer report ran on the radio, and suddenly Chip’s dad was heading back to the house to act on what he had heard. “It had an impact,” Chip says, on his career and on his family’s operation. (Pro Farmer is a part of Farm Journal Media.) Chip strives to make the same kind of impact every day. In addition to his new column here, you can catch Chip in the Pro Farmer newsletter, on the daily “Market Rally” radio program and at FarmJournalPro.com.
