Editor's Notebook: Meaningful Growth to Benefit You

I was about to start off by saying something about how important it is to always grow; whether in your skills, the number of acres you farm or numerous other ways to constantly show progress in our lives.

Then I stopped myself: Growing for its own sake isn’t necessarily good; bigger isn’t always better, and most of the farmers I know agree with me there.

But making bold, strategically sound moves is the mark of a healthy operation, and often those moves involve a great deal of growth.

Such is the case with Farm Journal Media’s recent purchase of Vance Publishing Corporation’s agricultural portfolio, which includes 21 leading websites, online databases, publications and trade shows in the produce, livestock, ag-retailer and row-crop markets. The list includes such titles as Drovers CattleNetwork, Dairy Herd Management, Bovine Veterinarian and Ag Professional, among others.

Some of the sectors covered by our new properties are new to Farm Journal Media; some aren’t. What the addition of Vance’s stable of titles does is give us at Farm Journal magazine and across the company a deeper reach into areas important to all of our readers, viewers and listeners.

We’ve long been honored to rank among the top sources for row-crop information; now we can help the livestock industry just as meaningfully.

The venerable Vance publications, with devoted, farmer-focused staff, can serve even more farmers as some of their good work is broadcast on Farm Journal Media’s ag-news TV programs, such as “AgDay” and “U.S. Farm Report,” as well as “AgriTalk” on the radio.

Yes, we’re bigger now. More importantly, we’re set to offer you even better information in the years ahead. That’s why my colleagues and I are so excited for the new year to begin.
