Editor’s Notebook: The Pieces to the Puzzle

July 25, 2013 12:00 AM

As a child, I savored the summer months on my family’s southwest Missouri farm. My idea of a good time was whiling away an afternoon on our screened-in front porch reading Highlights magazine. I especially liked the puzzles sprinkled throughout each issue. My two favorites were the hidden-picture puzzle and word match.

Today, I still like solving puzzles—which comes in handy when trying to sort through the seed industry. Tracking new company alliances, rapidly changing technologies, state and federal legislation, and the increasing impact of consumer groups on the business of farming has tested our editorial team’s puzzle-solving ability. Fortunately, we are more than up to the task. As you read the articles that follow, you’ll see our staff has decoded puzzles and unlocked information that can help you make more informed decisions for your farm.

Just like the well-thumbed copies of Highlights I used to pour over, the Seed Guide is one you’ll want to keep and refer to again in the months ahead.
