European Beef Ban Lifted

December 9, 2013 10:51 AM

After 15 years a ban on imports of European Union (EU) beef has been lifted. The original halt in imports came about after bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was found throughout the United Kingdom. While beef sourced from other countries only accounts for 8 percent of beef consumed in the U.S., the deal could lead to more exports for producers stateside to the EU. The opening of EU beef imports is expected to also help put the possible Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership on more stable footing.
