The recipient of a $22 million whistleblower award from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is a former Monsanto Co. employee who tipped the regulator off to improper accounting, his lawyer said in an e-mailed statement.

Monsanto agreed in February to pay $80 million to settle an SEC case over revenue tied to its weed-killer Roundup. Stuart Meissner, the former Monsanto employee’s attorney, didn’t identify the tipster by name in the statement released Tuesday.
