Gold is one of the most adaptable and useful metals, transforming its characteristics into beauty or high technical use. The 2010 World Dairy Expo Industry Person of the Year is known as an expert in dairy cattle pedigrees, yet has also transformed and enhanced the U.S. dairy industry as a breeder, author and leader.

Horace Backus of Mexico, N.Y., is being honored for his diverse and important service.

While famous as a dairy cattle “pedigree man,” Backus started out as part of the successful Butterfly Farms.

As a youth, he began a love affair with breeding the best animals for the dairy industry. The family business of R. Austin Backus, Inc., made its name by compiling sale catalogues. In time, Backus Associates was formed and soon excelled.
This year’s honoree has transformed his cattle expertise into a valuable historical asset as an author of dairy breeding and dairy family history. Backus has written eight books that allow cattle breeders and those interested in the legacy of the dairy industry to learn from accomplished breeders. His histories have allowed others to make cattle breeding a passion.
Backus has also been a tireless leader and servant to many industry groups. He served as a director of the National Holstein Board and member of its finance committee, and his colleagues consistently turned to him for trusted advice. They join in honoring him for a lifetime of experience and knowledge, and respect him as an unrivaled pedigree reader.
In addition to Backus, the 2010 World Dairy Expo recognition award winners are:
·         Dairy Woman of the Year—Liz Doornink of Jon-De Farm in Baldwin, Wis.;
·         International Person of the Year—Tadanaga Komori of Japan Livestock Trading Corporation, in Obihiro, Hokkaido, Japan;
·         Dairyman of the Year—Donald T. Bennink of North Florida Holsteins, in Bell, Fla..
The Industry Person of the Year award is sponsored by Accelerated Genetics, Dairy Herd Management, Merrick Animal Nutrition and Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health.
The four recipients will be honored during World Dairy Expo at a special “Dinner with the Stars,” held on Wednesday, Sept. 29, in the Exhibition Hall at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis. Tickets for the event are $30. Reservations are required by Tuesday, Sept. 21. For information about the event, visit the Expo Web site at www.worlddairyexpo.com or call (608) 224-6455.
