Around 30% of farmers report transport grain 10 miles or less to sell it.
Where are your closest grain markets? Is it only a few miles down the road or a state away?
The Dec. 18 Farm Journal Pulse, more than 1,500 farmers answered the question: On average, how many miles do you transport grain to sell it?
The majority of respondents, 31%, report transporting their grain 10 miles or lest. Just over 25% report transporting it between 11 and 20%, while 17% say they transport it between 21 and 30 miles.
Here are the full results:
- 1 to 10 miles: 31%
- 11 to 20 miles: 26%
- 21 to 30 miles: 17%
- 31 to 40 miles: 9%
- 41 or more miles: 18%
When it Pays to Transport
With falling cash corn and soybeans prices, shopping for basis (also known as the different between the local cash prices and the futures price) has become even more critical for producers who want to maximize sales.
"Our research has shown that a producer’s best market will change six times during the year, on average," says Logan Burgess, a grain broker for Grain Hedge in Bozeman, Mont. "But on average a producer will only sell to two separate locations in a year. They are leaving cents on the table."
