Fungicide Movement Matters
Preserving foliar health is important to maximizing crop yield. The type of fungicide you choose can have a major impact on how well an application controls disease. The way a fungicide moves into and within a plant will determine its disease-fighting value. Products with systemic movement offer several advantages over just contact activity, including longer control and better efficacy under less-than-ideal spray conditions and timing.
Contact vs. Systemic Activity
Contact fungicides remain on leaf surfaces and have no after-infection activity. They can wash off with rain or be degraded by sunlight, requiring repeat applications. Because they don’t move within the plant, new growth isn’t protected. Good spray coverage is required for effective control with contact fungicides.
Systemic fungicides are absorbed into plant tissue to offer some after-infection activity. Translaminar activity, also known as local systemic activity, allows fungicide droplets to spread out and move inside leaf tissue for both internal and external protection. The underside of the leaf is also protected. Xylem-systemic fungicides deliver even more control because they move upward within the plant in xylem tissue to protect new growth.
Two Effective Systemic Options
DuPont™ Aproach® and Aproach® Prima fungicides offer contact, local and xylem-systemic movement. Aproach® contains picoxystrobin – the most rapidly absorbed type of strobilurin available. Field studies showed improved corn yield, with an average increase of 6.86 bushels per acre, when Aproach®-treated corn hybrids were compared to untreated controls.
DuPont™ Aproach® Prima fungicide has two modes of action and preventive, curative and eradicant activity to control all phases of the pathogen life cycle. Five‑year DuPont Crop Protection performance trials tested the ability of fungicides in soybean and corn to increase grower profitability. Across 160 trials, Aproach® Prima demonstrated a positive return on investment for both corn and soybeans.
