Get Ready to Enlist

March 22, 2011 01:50 AM

The need to deploy a new weed control in the resistant weed war has never been greater. It’s a few years down the road, but farmers can look forward to enlisting the help of Enlist Weed Control System, the herbicide tolerant trait technology from Dow AgroSciences.

palmerThe new weed control tool will provide growers tolerance to both 2,4-D and glyphosate in one trait platform. Farmers like Malcom Haigwood are looking forward to a product that will give them additional over-the-top control of tough weeds like Palmer amaranth. “We currently have five or six different weed species that are extremely hard-to-control,” says Haigwood, Newport, Ark. “We are going to have to do some changing in the next two or three years because of this challenge.”

Any farmer that has used 2,4-D in the past knows the effective herbicide has some environmental challenges. Dow has also announced that it is developing a new herbicide solution to accompany the trait tolerance. Herbicide products containing Colex-D technology will feature ultra low volatility, minimized potential for physical drift, decreased odor and improved handling characteristics.

Enlist Weed Control System and the corresponding herbicide components are still pending regulatory approval.

Damon Palmer, Dow AgroSciences U.S. commercial leader, Enlist Weed Control System says the new trait technology will be delivered in elite germplasm. The 2,4-D and glyphosate tolerance will also be stacked with insect resistant traits. Commercial launch in the United States of the Enlist Weed Control System is anticipated in corn for the 2013 crop year with other crops to follow.
