Great American Barns: Sweitzer Barn

October 21, 2016 02:56 PM

This week’s Great American Barn comes from Delphi, Ind.

The Sweitzer Barn is owned by Sherry Mears and family. The style of barn was typically built by German settlers.

While the exact year of construction isn’t known by Mears and his family, but a similar barn down the road was built in 1863.

The bank barn features a 7-foot overhang, and the lower level walls and foundation were built with rough coarse rubble stone.

The Mears Farm is part of a national rural historic district, including several farmsteads.

That designation helps protect the tranquil area from development.

Thank you to the Mears family and the Heritage Barns Group of Carroll Co., Ind.
