Chicago-based Hazel Technologies Inc. has partnered with Dominican Republic avocado exporter WP Produce to use the post-harvest technology on Desbry brand avocados shipped to U.S. markets.
Before commercial introduction, more than a year of research was conducted in the WP Produce supply chain, according to a news release, with fruit originating from Florida and the Dominican Republic.
The release said the studies showed that Hazel packaging for avocado maintained the quality and shelf life of Desbry tropical avocados, and helped reduce shrink and food waste.
“WP Produce has been an industry leader in the tropical avocado market for decades, and we are continuously searching for new ways to further improve the supply chain for our premium-quality tropical avocados,” Chris Gonzalez, vice president of sales at WP Produce, said in the release. “So, as we sought to expand our distribution throughout the U.S. and Canada, we knew a partnership with Hazel Technologies would help us ensure all our customers from the East to West Coasts would receive high-quality fruit with longer shelf life at retail.”
The tests of the technology showed an additional four to five days shelf life at the retail level, according to the release, an improvement of about 40%.
Hazel Technologies will be at booth No. 4806 at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit expo Oct. 18-19, and WP Produce will be at the Dominican Republic booth, No. 4471.
