If you believe the stories in the national media, President Trump has made things worse, not better, for our country. Everyday there seems to be a new controversy or scandal that critics say prove his incompetence for the job.
Comedians mock him, Democrats oppose him and even some Republicans struggle to support him.
So what do farmers, who helped elect him, think?
Many that I have talked to remain supportive, even though some of his moves are testing that support like a budget proposal that includes critical cuts to agriculture programs, wanting to renegotiate a trade deal that has for the most part been very good for agriculture and threatening to restrict access to their labor force.
They instead point to his choice of Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court, Sonny Perdue as ag secretary and Scott Pruitt as EPA administrator and they support his efforts to reduce restrictive regulations like waters of the U.S.
It’s not that they agree with all his decisions, but they are convinced he is still much better than the alternative would have been, namely Hillary Clinton.
There’s no doubt President Trump brings many of his problems upon himself with odd Tweets and questionable choices, but the story that the media refuses to see or at least report is that so far, he seems to be doing what many of his supporters wanted him to do: shake things up and get government off their backs.
The question is how long he can last with everyone else on his back.
