How to Gain Bushels and Knowledge This Winter

Don't waste time this winter, hit the road and join Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie and learn top tips for high-yielding corn and soybeans. Make your travel plans early and receive the $99 early bird special valid until Dec. 14. 

Ferrie and the Farm Journal College crew will be traveling to three locations this winter, Dyersburg, Tenn., on Jan. 12, Harrisburg, Pa., on Jan. 14 and Mankato, Minn., on Feb. 2.

8:30 – 10:30 a.m. Understand the Big Three Components of Yield

This session will dive deep into water management, nutrient management and sunlight interception. In water management, attendees will learn the role tillage plays in water management, specifically how to farm in a vertical format, This session will also outline three essential nutrients—nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium—and the role they play in yield. A large portion of this session will cover sunlight interception and the role hybrid characteristics plays in relationship with all three components.

12:30 – 1:30 p.m. How Soybean Growth Stages Effect Management Decisions

It’s essential to understand how soybeans develop during the growing season because these stages affect numerous management decisions. This session will outline the fundamentals of yield components including nodes, pods, seeds and seed size to increase soybean production.

1:50 – 3:00 p.m. Gain Efficiency with Top Nitrogen Management
presented by Ken Ferrie
This session will begin by outlining the state’s nutrient reduction strategy. It will then dive deep
into strategies to improve your nitrogen management. Attendees will learn about the importance of nitrate testing to evaluate loss, the 4Rs of nitrogen, timing and placement,and the role inhibitors can play.
