How is SmartStax Shaping Up?

July 22, 2010 02:25 PM

How is the new SmartStax technology stacking up? Monsanto is tracking their new hybrids at a handful of farms this season.

At a root dig on the John and Dean Werries farm near Chapin, Ill., we learned that rootworms can do the back stroke. Refuge hybrids were showing some root pruning, despite heavy rainfall throughout the growing season.

Rootmass on the SmartStax hybrids were noticeably larger compared to a VT3 hybrid and a straight Roundup hybrid. Where the technology really seemed to be shining is in defense against heavy corn ear worm pressure.

Listen in as Chris Kallal, the local territory sales manager for the DeKalb/Asgrow seed brand, describe what he's finding in the field.
