Iowa Hog Barn Fire Kills 141 Piglets, Sows

Christmas Eve ended in tragedy at an Iowa hog farm after a fire broke out in one of its farrowing barns.

According to the Associated Press, the fire was reported at Nelson Brothers Farm near Mediapolis, Iowa, in the afternoon on Dec. 24. Though crews were able to extinguish the blaze quickly, 131 piglets and 10 sows were killed.

The 30 firefighters on the scene were able to save an estimated 30 sows and 300 piglets.
