The United States Department of Agriculture reported this afternoon that 238,600 dairy cows were slaughtered in federally inspected plants in July, up 7,000 head over a year ago. Culling was up some 17,000 head over June.
Note, however, there was one more business day of operation in July 2015 because the 4th fell on a Saturday. On a daily basis, July 2015 was actually down 153 head per day compared to 2014. On a daily basis comparing July to June 2014, about 300 more cattle were slaughtered.
Year to date, 1,695,300 dairy cows have been slaughtered. That’s up 72,500 head, or 4.5%.
