July Dairy Cow Culling Up Kinda, Sorta

The United States Department of Agriculture reported this afternoon that 238,600 dairy cows were slaughtered in federally inspected plants in July, up 7,000 head over a year ago. Culling was up some 17,000 head over June.

Note, however, there was one more business day of operation in July 2015 because the 4th fell on a Saturday. On a daily basis, July 2015 was actually down 153 head per day compared to 2014. On a daily basis comparing July to June 2014, about 300 more cattle were slaughtered.

Year to date, 1,695,300 dairy cows have been slaughtered. That’s up 72,500 head, or 4.5%.
