Throughout the 2017 Top Producer Seminar, experts in business, finance, taxes and human resources returned to a common theme: assess risks and manage around them. Doing so will lead you to map out a vision for the future rather than dwelling on the worries of the moment.

“Don’t ever let your memories be bigger than your dreams,” says Jim Craig, winner of an Olympic gold medal and goalie for the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” hockey team. He served as the event’s keynote speaker.

More than 500 farmers from 26 states attended the seminar featuring nearly 30 educational sessions on topics including commodity marketing, management and federal policy.

Roughly 50 people attended this year’s all-new risk-management workshop before the start of the conference. Registration opened Tuesday evening with a welcome reception.

The event included the annual Top Producer of the Year award banquet, where Editor Sara Schafer crowned Chalmers and Lori Anne Carr of Titan Farms in Ridge Spring, S.C., as the winners of the 2017 Top Producer of the Year award.

Also finalists for the award were Richard and Roderick Gumz of Gumz Farms in Endeavor, Wis., and John Pagel of Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy in Kewaunee, Wis. Each finalist will appear in an issue of Top Producer. The 2018 seminar runs Jan. 23–26 in Chicago.
