An auction in McDonough County, Illinois, April 7 raised eyebrows throughout the region. The 311 acres located a few miles of north Blandinsville consisted of high-quality soils in two tracts and very average soils in a third tract.
Tract 1: 132 acres with 128 acres tillable. The soil Productivity Index (PI) was 143.2 on the Illinois Bulletin 811 scale with 147 being maximum. It sold for $13,200 acre.
Tract 2: 106 acres with 104 acres tillable. It featured a soil PI of 141.8 (147 max). It brought $13,000 per acre/
Tract 3: 73 acres with 50 acres tillable. The soil PI was 121.4. It also had am 11,000-bu. grain bin and open-front wooden shed. It sold for $7,500 an acre, or $10,950 per tillable acre.
