Land Sale of the Week: $14,700/a in Western Illinois

Mike Walsten

A square easy-to-farm 40 acres in Hancock County sold Sept. 30 for a hefty $14,700 an acre. The farm was located three miles east and 4 miles south of Nauvoo or about 8 miles northeast of Hamilton. It was almost all tillable and flat, which made it especially attractive in a county that has plenty of rolling ground. The Optimum Predicted Corn Yield for the soils was listed at 184.7.

Handling the auction was Sullivan & Son Auction, LLC out of Carthage, Ill., 217-743-5200.

Makes no economic sense whatsoever, just crazy really! Guaranteed negative economic return from day 1, but a lot of these nuts don't care or apparently can't do math. If any amount was borrowed from Farm Credit for this its shameful. Farm Credit has enabled this bubble.
