Less than Half of Corn Crop Mature, 7% Harvested

Harvest is picking up across the country. See USDA’s latest crop progress reports, as well the first 100 farmer yield reports.

After this year’s slow planting season, it’s no surprise harvest progress has also been slow out of the gate for the nation’s corn farmers.

As of Sept. 22, USDA estimates only 55% of the 16% of the U.S. corn crop is mature (93% of the crop has dented). The North Carolina corn crop is 100% mature and the Texas corn crop is 50% mature. Michigan, North Dakota and Wisconsin have the slowest-progressing crops, all with less than 30% mature.

As for harvest, USDA estimates 7% of the crop is out of the field, which is far behind the 16% five-year average. Harvest is the most far along in North Carolina (74% harvested), followed by Texas (62% harvested).

According to more than 120 yield reports to AgWeb’s Corn Harvest Map, yields are hovering right around 150 bu./acre. The current national average is 158.4 bu. per acre, and these reports encompass nearly 70,000 acres.

Yields are greatly varied – ranging from 20 bu./acre to more than 300 bu./acre. So far, the highest corn yield is from Richland, Ill., with a yield of 334 bu./acre.

USDA’s September report pegs the national corn yield average at 155.3 bu./acre. For soybeans, USDA’s yield estimate is 41.2 bu./acre. Other high yields have come in from Arkansas, California, Nebraska, Texas and Mississippi.
